Elon Musk crossed the $600 billion mark in December 2025, according to wealth estimates—not because he held that amount in cash. Forbes put his net worth at $677 billion at noon Eastern on December 15; Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index estimated nearly $638 billion that day. The different totals reflect how publishers value assets, especially private-company shares.

How the $600 billion milestone was reported

Forbes reported on December 16, 2025, that Musk had become the first person estimated to be worth more than $600 billion. Its figure was $677 billion as of noon Eastern on December 15. Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index put him at nearly $638 billion on December 15, after news of a new SpaceX valuation.

These are dated estimates from two publishers, not a verified account balance or a measurement of money Musk could immediately spend. The headline describes a milestone reached in 2025; it should not be read as a current net-worth figure. Later reporting in June 2026 described Musk as crossing the trillion-dollar threshold.

Why SpaceX drove the increase

Forbes reported that SpaceX launched a tender offer valuing the private company at $800 billion, twice the $400 billion valuation cited for August 2025. Forbes attributed the tender-offer information to two company investors. Because SpaceX is private, the reported valuation was not a public-market price for all of its shares.

Forbes estimated Musk owned about 42% of SpaceX and valued that stake at $336 billion using the $800 billion company valuation. Bloomberg also estimated his SpaceX ownership at 42%, but valued it at $317 billion after applying a liquidity discount for private-company holdings. The difference helps explain why wealth indexes can report substantially different totals even when responding to the same company-valuation news.

How Forbes and Bloomberg arrived at different totals

Publisher and estimate As-of date SpaceX stake treatment Other details reported
Forbes: $677 billion December 15, 2025, at noon Eastern Estimated 42% stake valued at $336 billion using an $800 billion tender-offer valuation; no liquidity discount is stated in the report. Included an estimated 12% Tesla stake worth $197 billion, a discounted estimate for Tesla options, and an estimated interest in xAI Holdings.
Bloomberg Billionaires Index: nearly $638 billion December 15, 2025 Estimated 42% stake valued at $317 billion after a private-company liquidity discount. The report cited its index estimate following the $800 billion SpaceX valuation news; the cited account does not give comparable component values for Tesla, options, or xAI Holdings.

The figures should be compared as publisher estimates, not treated as competing disclosures of a cash balance. Forbes’s report said Musk and SpaceX representatives did not respond to its requests for comment. The reporting does not establish a direct statement from Musk about reaching the milestone.

What “net worth” means in this story

A billionaire ranking estimates the value of assets attributed to a person and subtracts estimated liabilities. For publicly traded holdings, a publisher can use market prices; for a private company such as SpaceX, it must make assumptions about the value of the company and the owner’s share. A liquidity discount, as used by Bloomberg for Musk’s SpaceX stake, reflects that private shares may not be readily sold at the estimated value.

So “worth $600 billion” does not mean Musk had $600 billion in cash, or that every share could be sold at the headline valuation. The estimates also included more than SpaceX: Forbes counted Tesla shares, Tesla options, and an estimated xAI Holdings interest in its total.
