Elcoteq Network was a Finnish-origin electronics manufacturing-services company that built an international production network and handled products for major technology brands. Its 2000 annual report listed EMS plants in nine countries, and named Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola and Salcomp among its largest customers. The company’s history shows how electronics suppliers followed customers and production across borders—not that Elcoteq was itself a consumer electronics brand.
What was Elcoteq Network?
Elcoteq was an electronics manufacturing-services (EMS) provider. Rather than primarily selling products under its own consumer brand, it worked for product makers, combining engineering, manufacturing and supply-chain services. Its business also extended beyond initial production into after-market work such as repair and reverse logistics.
The company’s 2011 description covered activities including sourcing, configuration, testing and delivery. Its After Market Services segment handled reverse logistics, depot repair, refurbishment, recycling and salvage. That breadth matters: Elcoteq was positioned as a production and product-life-cycle partner, not simply an assembly plant.
What did Elcoteq make and service?
Elcoteq manufactured or serviced electronics for customers across consumer, communications and industrial markets. Products named in company materials included mobile phones, set-top boxes, LED lighting, flat-panel TVs, communications infrastructure and industrial electronics. Its 2011 release also cited tablets, navigation devices and gaming products as examples of customer products within its services.
#1 Best Overall
- All products are tested for stability, consistency and reliability,Ensure product excellence
- Save time with this handy box full of the most practical and common electronic components
- Easy to store: Each different component is packaged in a plastic bag, Resistors values are stamped with the according value
- Electronic components set include: diodes, resistors, transistors, LED diodes, electrolytic capacitors, ceramic capacitors
- Electronics component kit: This is a great assortment of components for electronic professionals or enthusiasts
These were examples of products handled for customers, not evidence of an Elcoteq-owned retail line. The distinction is important when interpreting the company’s name alongside the devices consumers may remember.
How far had Elcoteq expanded by 2000?
Elcoteq’s 2000 annual report listed EMS plants in Finland, Estonia, Russia, Hungary, Poland, Germany, Switzerland, Mexico and China. That is a count of the nine countries named in the report, rather than a separately stated company statistic. The footprint connected a Finnish-origin supplier to manufacturing locations in Europe, North America and Asia.

The same annual report named Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola and Salcomp among Elcoteq’s largest customers. Nokia was therefore a significant part of the story, but the company’s own list shows that its customer base was not limited to Nokia.
Was Elcoteq a Nokia supplier?
Yes. Nokia was among Elcoteq’s largest customers in the 2000 annual report. But Elcoteq should be understood as a supplier serving multiple electronics companies, not as a Nokia subsidiary or a business whose entire customer relationship can be reduced to Nokia.

ETLA’s 2012 analysis of Finnish electronics subcontracting places Elcoteq within broader changes in supplier globalization, supplier structures and customer-supplier relationships during the mobile-phone industry’s rapid expansion. ETLA frames global mobile penetration as rising from 12% to more than 60% between 2000 and 2008. The analysis describes how scale, production economics and global sourcing changed the position of Finland’s earlier subcontractor network; it is context for Elcoteq’s environment, not proof of a single cause of the company’s later financial difficulties.
Competition and the Americas business
ETLA reports that Elcoteq lost its Americas business in 2006 after Foxconn entered the region through a planned plant in Reynosa, Mexico. This is ETLA’s account of a competitive and sourcing shift, rather than a finding stated in Elcoteq’s own annual report. It illustrates the pressure on suppliers to maintain sufficient capacity and follow customers into the regions where production was moving.

What happened to Elcoteq in 2011?
On 31 August 2011, Elcoteq announced that three Finnish subsidiaries had filed for bankruptcy because of a lack of funding. The company estimated that about 100 people in Finland were affected and reported approximately 6,800 employees worldwide at that time.
The same release said the Luxembourg parent was continuing a controlled-management process and developing business together with key customers. Elcoteq stated: “Elcoteq SE continues the controlled management process in Luxembourg and business development together with its key customers.” This describes the company’s position on 31 August 2011; it does not establish the parent’s final legal outcome or what subsequently happened to every operation outside Finland.

What can be said about Elcoteq’s status today?
The available company announcement establishes the 2011 Finnish subsidiary bankruptcies and the parent’s then-current controlled-management process, but not the parent’s ultimate legal disposition. Nokia’s 2025 Form 20-F, filed on 5 March 2026, discusses Nokia’s manufacturing network and contract-manufacturing partners; it does not establish Elcoteq SE’s current legal status. The evidence therefore does not support describing Elcoteq as still operating, as part of Nokia, or as having a particular final legal status.
