On August 14, 2006, Dow Corning announced that it had acquired assets from Aprilis Inc.’s holographic data-storage business for an undisclosed sum. The reports described an asset acquisition, not a purchase of Aprilis Inc. as a whole. Dow Corning planned to continue the work through a new Maynard, Massachusetts-based subsidiary, DCE Aprilis Inc., in its Business and Technology Incubator.
What Dow Corning acquired
Dow Corning, headquartered in Midland, Michigan, was already an Aprilis shareholder and had supplied materials for its recording medium. The August 2006 transaction brought Aprilis’s holographic-storage business assets under Dow Corning’s control; contemporary coverage did not report a full-company takeover, disclose a price, or establish that all Aprilis employees, contracts, liabilities, or other activities transferred. EDN’s announcement coverage and EE Times’ report describe the scope and planned new subsidiary.
DCE Aprilis was to pursue development and commercialization from Maynard within Dow Corning’s Business and Technology Incubator. Shane Ladwein was named general manager, and former Aprilis scientist David Waldman was identified as chief scientist. The stated product direction was removable storage with capacity in the hundreds of gigabytes, especially for archiving and enterprise data warehousing. That was a development goal, not confirmation that a product reached the market.
Why a materials company wanted a storage technology
Dow Corning’s role was more than financial. It had previously invested in Aprilis and supplied epoxy-modified siloxy silanes used in the company’s photosensitive recording medium. The acquisition therefore deepened an existing relationship between a materials supplier and a storage-system developer. Dow Corning could pair expertise in specialty chemistry and silicon-based materials with Aprilis’s optical-storage work, while placing development inside an established corporate incubator. Chemical & Engineering News reported the investment and transaction; its earlier feature on holographic data storage describes Aprilis’s materials relationship and technical ambitions.

How holographic data storage worked
Unlike a conventional optical disc, which records data along a surface, holographic storage encodes information within the volume of a photosensitive material. A laser records a page of data as an interference pattern. Multiple pages can be stored in the same region by changing the angle or another optical parameter used to record and retrieve them. In principle, this volume recording could combine high capacity with rapid access to large blocks of data.
The concept required a complete optical system, not simply a high-capacity disc: recording media, lasers, optics, spatial light modulators, detectors, motion control, and error correction all had to work together. Aprilis’s patent filings illustrate work on both storage systems and media: its holographic data-storage system application and a DCE Aprilis storage-medium application. What Aprilis had demonstrated—and what it had not
Before the deal, contemporary coverage reported that Aprilis had demonstrated a 120-millimeter disc with a claimed capacity of 200 GB and a transfer rate of 200 MB/s. Those figures were historical company claims or reported demonstration results, not independently verified specifications for a shipping product. The same 2005 coverage discussed a concept for searching 100 GB of data in about five seconds; it should not be read as a general-purpose performance benchmark.
At acquisition time, the more cautious public description was that DCE Aprilis would develop removable media holding hundreds of gigabytes. The sources establish a planned development and commercialization effort, not a broadly available product launch. The target applications included enterprise archives and data warehouses, where storing and retrieving large collections could matter more than compatibility with everyday consumer devices.

Why a promising capacity claim did not settle the business case
High capacity alone could not establish that holographic storage would be competitive. A commercial system needed affordable drives and media, reliable manufacturing, durable recording materials, error-resistant operation, and a clear advantage over hard disks, tape, optical discs, and emerging solid-state storage. It also needed customers willing to adopt a new format and the infrastructure around it.
Contemporary coverage recognized the need for a sufficiently valuable application to justify those costs. Archiving and specialized high-throughput retrieval were possible targets, while biometric data and other optical-correlation uses were discussed as potential applications. These were market opportunities under consideration, not evidence that Aprilis had secured broad adoption. The C&EN technology feature provides context on the commercialization challenge.

What the later record shows
Patent records document continued technical activity after the 2006 transaction and later assignments involving DCE Aprilis, STX Aprilis, and ForceTEC-related ownership. For example, the record for U.S. Patent 6,784,300 includes assignment history, while the later DCE Aprilis application reflects work on storage media.
Patent ownership changes can show that intellectual property moved between entities; by themselves, they do not establish product sales, commercial success, a shutdown date, or the complete corporate history of DCE Aprilis. A later historical account of 2006 holography developments lists the Dow Corning transaction but does not resolve those business outcomes.
