Do not mail your old phone until you have transferred your data, removed every activation lock, confirmed the exact IMEI and deadline, and photographed the device and package. If your transaction permits an eligible T-Mobile store return, handing it over in person is usually the lower-risk option. T-Mobile says store returns can avoid printing and packing a label and may apply the trade-in value and promotion to your account right away. Confirm the location first: authorized retailers, T-Mobile kiosks inside Costco or Sam’s Club, and some retailer-originated transactions may not accept trade-ins.
If shipping is required, use the supplied kit or prepaid label, build a complete evidence trail, and keep it until both the one-time credit and any monthly promotional credits appear.
First, identify what you are returning
“Send your old phone to T-Mobile” can describe different transactions with different deadlines and rules.
| Transaction | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Ordinary trade-in | The device is exchanged for a one-time credit, monthly promotional bill credits, or both. |
| JUMP! or Yearly Upgrade | The upgrade terms may require shipment even when a normal trade-in could be accepted at a store. |
| New-device return | This is governed by the new phone’s return policy, not the ordinary trade-in process. |
| Purchase through Apple, Samsung, Walmart, Costco, or another retailer | The retailer’s trade-in workflow may require shipment and may not be accepted at a T-Mobile store. |
| Protection 360 or insurance claim | Follow the separate Assurant or claim instructions; do not substitute the ordinary trade-in label. |
For a standard T-Mobile trade-in started through a T-Mobile store, customer service, T-Mobile.com, or the T-Life app, check whether an eligible store can take the phone. Use T-Mobile’s store locator and confirm acceptance for your specific order before traveling. T-Mobile’s support instructions are at Return your trade-in device.

Can you avoid shipping?
Sometimes. A store handoff can remove carrier and packaging risks, but it is not universal. A transaction initiated through another retailer, some JUMP! or Yearly Upgrade orders, and other order-specific arrangements may require mail return. Authorized retailers and certain kiosks are not interchangeable with eligible T-Mobile stores.
If a store accepts your device, ask for written proof of handoff that identifies the phone or IMEI. Do not assume every location provides the same receipt.
Find the controlling deadline before you pack
T-Mobile’s published pages describe the 30-day window differently: one says the trade-in must be returned within 30 days of when the new device shipped, while another says within 30 days of receiving it. Your order, trade-in email, label, or account instructions control. Use the earliest applicable date and ship several days early so carrier transit and warehouse intake do not consume the window.

A late or unreceived trade-in can mean loss of the one-time credit, removal of the device promotion, reversal of promotional credits already issued, or a changed estimated value. T-Mobile also says it can take up to two billing cycles for trade-in value to appear.
Back up and transfer everything before erasing
- Back up photos, contacts, messages, files, authenticator codes, password-manager data, and anything stored only on the old phone.
- Verify the new phone can make calls, receive texts, access two-factor authentication, and use the transferred eSIM or physical SIM.
- Move banking, wallet, transit, health, and authentication apps before resetting.
- If moving from iPhone to Android, deregister iMessage as appropriate.
- Remove payment cards and passes from Apple Wallet or equivalent services.
- Record the old phone’s IMEI, preferably the IMEI tied to the T-Mobile estimate, plus the RMA, order number, and promotion.
Disable activation locks, then reset
iPhone
- Complete the backup and service transfer, and make sure you know the Apple Account password.
- Turn off Find My if it is not disabled automatically during erasure.
- Start Erase All Content and Settings. When asked about an eSIM, choose the option to erase the eSIM profile after service has transferred.
- Wait for the “Hello” setup screen. The phone must not ask for the previous owner’s Apple Account.
- Remove the physical SIM and power the phone off.
Apple says erasing an iPhone turns off Find My and Activation Lock and specifically advises erasing the eSIM when selling or trading in an eSIM-equipped device. Apple also warns that Stolen Device Protection can impose a security delay—potentially an hour when account-security changes are attempted in an unfamiliar location. See Apple’s preparation instructions.

Android
- Back up and transfer your data.
- Remove the Google account and, where required by the manufacturer, the Samsung or other manufacturer account.
- Disable Google device protection, Samsung Lock, and other anti-theft or activation protections.
- Delete downloaded eSIM profiles.
- Use the manufacturer’s normal Settings reset process, not a recovery-mode shortcut that can leave activation protection attached.
- Wait for the initial setup screen, then remove the physical SIM and microSD card and power off.
Menu names vary by Samsung, Pixel, Motorola, OnePlus, and software version, so verify the result rather than relying on one universal path. T-Mobile’s requirements are summarized on its Cell Phone Trade-In page. Google’s comparable shipping guidance also requires security removal, eSIM and SIM removal, and a factory reset: Google Store Help.
Document the exact phone and its condition
T-Mobile says the returned device must match the phone used for the estimate. Before sealing the package:
- Photograph or record the IMEI and the phone powering on.
- Capture the front, back, sides, screen, cameras, ports, and every existing mark or crack.
- Confirm the make, model, storage capacity, color if relevant, and IMEI match the estimate.
- Keep the RMA, order number, promotion details, label, and deadline together.
An estimate is not necessarily final. Inspection can change the value for a cracked display, housing or liquid damage, failure to power on, wrong model or storage, mismatched IMEI, an active lock, a lost or stolen report, or damage during transit.

Pack and ship it so you can prove what happened
- Use T-Mobile’s return kit and label whenever one was issued.
- Match one phone to its correct label, trade-in ID, IMEI, order, and promotion. Do not combine multiple phones unless the instructions clearly permit it.
- Remove the physical SIM, microSD card, eSIM profile, case, charger, cable, and other accessories unless T-Mobile specifically requests them.
- Cushion the phone so it cannot move freely inside the box. T-Mobile’s terms require packaging that avoids shipping damage, and T-Mobile says it is not responsible for damage sustained during shipping.
- Photograph the phone inside the package, the sealed package, and the label.
- Use a staffed location for the carrier named on the label and obtain an acceptance receipt. Avoid an unattended drop box when you need a witnessed handoff.
- Keep the tracking number and receipt until the trade-in and all promotional credits are confirmed.
Do not ship a phone with a swollen, damaged, or defective battery. Google’s shipping guidance expressly warns against it; ask T-Mobile how the specific offer handles a damaged device and follow applicable battery-shipping rules.
What happens after the carrier accepts it?
| Milestone | What it proves |
|---|---|
| Carrier acceptance scan | The carrier accepted a package from you. |
| Carrier delivery scan | The carrier records delivery to the destination; it does not prove T-Mobile matched the phone. |
| T-Mobile warehouse receipt | T-Mobile has recorded the package at its return destination. |
| Device inspection | T-Mobile has evaluated identity, lock status, functionality, and condition. |
| Account posting | The one-time value and monthly promotional credits appear according to the offer terms. |
T-Mobile may notify you that the estimated value or promotion changed after inspection. Depending on the offer, you may need to sign in and accept a revised offer or request return of the device; do not assume every revalued phone is automatically returned.
If T-Mobile says it was late, damaged, or missing
- Save the acceptance receipt, tracking history, delivery date, package photos, IMEI, RMA, order number, label, and promotion.
- Check that tracking shows delivery to T-Mobile’s actual return destination, not merely a regional carrier facility.
- Contact T-Mobile through the account or customer-care channel attached to the order. Request a case number.
- Have the representative record the IMEI, tracking number, delivery date, order, promotion, and whether the warehouse scanned the package.
- If T-Mobile says the package arrived but the phone was missing or damaged, request the specific inspection result and provide your photos and IMEI evidence.
- Continue checking for the one-time credit and monthly credits, and preserve written communications during escalation.
Situations that need special caution
Lost, stolen, blocked, or inaccessible phone
T-Mobile may reject a device reported lost or stolen, and blocked IMEIs are not eligible for handset exchange or trade-in. Paying off financing alone does not guarantee eligibility. If the phone is lost, broken, locked, or cannot display its IMEI, contact T-Mobile before sending anything; never substitute a similar device.

Returning the new phone after sending the trade-in
T-Mobile says a submitted promotional trade-in cannot be returned. If you return the new phone afterward, T-Mobile may issue the originally estimated value as monthly bill credits because the old device is no longer available. The exact economics depend on the order’s terms, so review them before returning the new device.
When mailing is a bad idea
- The deadline or label is unclear.
- You have not completed backup, eSIM transfer, or authentication migration.
- You cannot prove the IMEI or device condition.
- The phone has a swollen or damaged battery.
- An activation lock or account-security problem remains.
- An eligible store can accept the device and provide a documented handoff.
Before-you-ship checklist
- Transaction type and eligibility confirmed.
- Order-specific deadline recorded; shipment planned early.
- Data, authentication, wallet, banking, and eSIM transferred.
- Find My/Activation Lock or Android anti-theft protection disabled.
- Factory reset completed; setup screen appears without the old account.
- Physical SIM and memory card removed.
- IMEI, RMA, order, condition photos, and power-on evidence saved.
- Correct label and kit matched to the phone.
- Phone cushioned; no unrequested accessories included.
- Staffed drop-off receipt and tracking number retained.
For a manufacturer alternative, Apple’s official trade-in program is described at Apple Trade In. That can be useful when you want Apple credit or an Apple Gift Card, but it does not replace T-Mobile’s requirements for a carrier promotion.
