Marko Elez was reported to have resigned from the U.S. Treasury Department on February 6, 2025, after The Wall Street Journal asked about his connection to a deleted social-media account containing racist and eugenics-related posts. ABC News reported the allegations but said it had not independently verified the posts. The administration said the next day that it intended to reinstate him.

What happened to Marko Elez

WIRED reported on February 6, 2025, that Elez resigned after questions about his reported connection to the deleted account. At the time, he was described as a Treasury special government employee associated with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. WIRED’s account also said he had been given privileges to write code on the Bureau of the Fiscal Service’s Payment Automation Manager and Secure Payment System.

On February 7, ABC News reported that the Trump administration planned to rehire him. Its report described posts attributed to the deleted account as racist and eugenics-related, while expressly noting that ABC had not independently verified either the posts or their authorship. Those allegations should therefore be treated as reported claims, not established quotations or findings about Elez.

Timeline of the reported events

  1. February 6, 2025: WIRED reported Elez’s resignation following inquiries about the deleted account and described earlier code-writing privileges on two payment systems. Read the WIRED report.
  2. February 7, 2025: ABC News reported the administration’s intention to reinstate him and described a consent order governing access to sensitive taxpayer information. Read the ABC News report.
  3. February 7, 2025: Senator Ron Wyden wrote to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent about DOGE’s access to Treasury systems. The letter presents Wyden’s assessment, based on cited press reports; it is not an independent finding about the account or its author. Read the Senate Finance Committee letter.
  4. February 21, 2025 (as later reporting cited in a filing): A federal complaint filed February 10 referred to subsequent reporting that Elez had been reinstated at the Social Security Administration. The complaint is a litigant’s filing, not a judicial finding, and the timing means the cited event should be described as later reporting. View the complaint.

What is known about his system access

The descriptions differ because they concern different systems and points in time. They should not be collapsed into a single claim that Elez controlled Treasury payments.

Source and date Access described How to interpret it
WIRED, February 6, 2025 Privileges that included writing code on the Payment Automation Manager and Secure Payment System Reported earlier access to named Bureau of the Fiscal Service systems
ABC News, February 7, 2025 Read-only access for Elez and another DOGE-associated person to sensitive taxpayer information under a consent order A later or separately governed access description; read-only access does not itself establish authority to alter data

The $5.45 trillion figure needs context

WIRED cited U.S. Treasury records showing that the Bureau of the Fiscal Service handled $5.45 trillion in payments in fiscal year 2024. That is a system-wide annual figure, not the amount Elez personally handled, changed or influenced. See the source and Treasury context.

What remains unresolved

Whether the posts were independently authenticated

ABC News said it had not independently verified the social-media posts. The available reports therefore support wording such as “posts reported by news outlets and attributed to a deleted account,” rather than presenting them as verified statements by Elez.

Whether he still works for the federal government

The public record summarized here establishes a reported Treasury resignation, an administration promise to reinstate him, and later reporting cited in a court complaint about an SSA reinstatement. It does not establish his employment status as of October 1, 2026.

How many DOGE personnel were involved more broadly

The Government Accountability Office counted 206 DOGE personnel who held positions within the Executive Office of the President from January 20, 2025, through January 31, 2026. That is the GAO’s review population, not a count of Elez’s colleagues at Treasury or evidence about his tenure. Read the GAO report.

How to read the claims accurately

  • Use “reported” or “attributed” for the social-media allegations.
  • Keep access claims tied to the specific system, source and date.
  • Do not equate Treasury’s total payment volume with Elez’s personal activity.
  • Distinguish the administration’s stated rehire intention from the later SSA report.
  • Do not treat Senator Wyden’s letter or a court complaint as an independent adjudication of the underlying allegations.
