Does HP Do Laptop Trade-Ins? What U.S. Shoppers Need to Know

HP does offer trade-in opportunities from time to time, but a historical U.S. promotion ended in 2025. Check current terms before buying or shipping a laptop.

Yes, HP has offered laptop trade-in promotions, but they are not a guaranteed, year-round buyback program. The latest indexed U.S. terms describe an offer that ended June 14, 2025, so its rewards and eligibility rules are historical—not a current deal to count on. Before buying an HP computer or shipping an old one, check HP’s live offer page and terms.

What HP means by laptop trade-in

HP’s support guidance points customers to country-specific options that can include a promotional trade-in, a return-for-cash offer, donation, or recycling. These routes are not interchangeable: a trade-in promotion may provide a reward after a qualifying purchase, while recycling may simply provide a way to dispose of equipment responsibly. Availability depends on the country or region. HP’s support page explains its equipment-return options, and its global promotions page directs visitors to country-specific programs.

For U.S. shoppers, the indexed HP consumer offer required buying a selected new HP computer directly from HP.com. It was not a standard valuation service that quoted a laptop’s resale value and paid that amount.

What the expired U.S. offer paid

The indexed promotion applied to qualifying new HP PC purchases made from April 16 through June 14, 2025. It offered a virtual prepaid Mastercard reward based on the new HP purchase price, with a possible additional bonus for an eligible Apple Mac. Those dates have passed; the figures below describe that historical offer only and should not be treated as available now.

Qualifying new HP purchase price Historical reward
Up to $999.99 $100 Virtual Mastercard
$1,000 or more $200 Virtual Mastercard
Eligible Apple Mac Potential additional $200 bonus

The reward was tied to the qualifying new HP purchase, not calculated as a device-by-device market-value quote for the old computer. HP’s U.S. laptop trade-in page and formal terms contain the offer details; an indexed page remaining online does not establish that its promotion is active.

Which laptops qualified under those terms?

The expired offer accepted eligible laptop or desktop computers of any manufacturer, brand, or model. A non-HP laptop could therefore qualify under those specific terms, but brand alone did not determine eligibility.

Requirement in the indexed offer What it meant in practice
Device type and age A laptop or desktop no more than six years old.
Working condition In full working order, with no damage beyond reasonable wear and tear.
Power and accessories Included its battery and charging cable, and could run on its own power for at least 15 minutes.
Security Unlocked, with user accounts, passwords, and biometric data cleared.
Ownership Owned outright by the person making the claim.

Under those criteria, a cracked screen, dead battery, missing charger, device lock, or age beyond the stated limit could make a laptop ineligible. A device that did not match the claim’s model or condition could also fail inspection. HP or its promotion administrator could request ownership verification. These are rules from the expired offer, not permanent requirements for every future promotion.

The indexed offer applied to U.S. residents aged 18 or older, excluding Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Do not assume those geographic limits—or any other U.S. term—apply to an offer in another country.

How the claim and shipment process worked

The historical claim process involved several stages rather than an instant trade-in at checkout:

  1. Buy an eligible new HP product directly from HP.com during the promotion period.
  2. Receive a unique trade-in code by email.
  3. Go to HP’s promotion claim portal, enter the code, complete the claim form, and upload proof of purchase.
  4. Wait for provisional approval and the shipping instructions and prepaid label.
  5. Package and ship the old computer for inspection.
  6. If it passes validation, receive the virtual prepaid card by email.

That offer required a claim within 60 days of purchase, shipment within 30 days of provisional approval, and reward delivery within 30 days after successful validation. Those were historical deadlines; check the terms of any current offer for its exact dates, claim steps, reward type, and eligible product list before buying or shipping.

What if the laptop fails inspection?

Under the indexed terms, HP could reject a claim if the device did not meet the requirements. The customer had seven working days after the rejection notice to request the device’s return; without a timely request, it could be recycled free of charge. The terms also warned that shipping damage or loss could affect the claim, and proof of shipment was not necessarily proof that HP received the computer.

Before sending a laptop you would want back, read the active offer’s rejection and return provisions. For a shipment, photograph the device, serial number, accessories, and packed parcel, and retain the tracking number and claim emails.

Protect your data before sending a laptop

You are responsible for removing personal information before shipment. HP’s support guidance warns that deleting files or reformatting a drive may not be enough. Although the expired promotion’s terms said data on received devices would be permanently destroyed, that processing happens after receipt and is not a substitute for making your own backup and wiping the computer beforehand.

  • Back up the files you need, then sign out of Microsoft, Apple, Google, and other accounts.
  • Remove the computer from account-management and device-location services where relevant, such as Apple Find My or a Microsoft account device list.
  • Remove BIOS, firmware, administrator, and activation locks that could prevent another person from using the device.
  • Perform a secure operating-system reset or follow your organization’s approved erasure procedure. For a business device, retain any required erasure record or certificate.
  • Keep photos and shipment records, but do not retain data on the device itself.

HP’s data and recycling guidance places responsibility for removing personal data on the owner.

Trade in, sell, or recycle?

Option Usually suits Main trade-off
HP trade-in promotion Someone already buying a qualifying HP computer during an active offer who values a relatively convenient, prepaid-shipping process. The offer can expire, and a fixed promotional reward may not reflect the old laptop’s market value.
Private sale Owners of recent, premium, gaming, or workstation laptops, especially if the device is in good condition. May produce more proceeds, but takes time and carries buyer, payment, and shipping risks.
Recycling Owners of broken, incomplete, low-value, or promotion-ineligible devices who want responsible disposal. Recycling is not necessarily paid; HP’s support page does not establish a universal payment amount.

Compare any active reward with realistic resale proceeds after accounting for effort and risk. If you are not buying a qualifying HP product, or want immediate cash rather than a promotional prepaid card, a trade-in may not fit. HP’s recycling page is another route to check for country-specific disposal options.

How to check whether an HP offer is live

  1. Open the HP U.S. laptop trade-in page and look for a current purchase window, not just a reward banner.
  2. Read the linked terms for eligible HP models, purchase channel, geographic limits, old-device rules, claim deadline, shipping deadline, and rejection process.
  3. Confirm whether the reward is cash, store credit, or a prepaid card, and whether it depends on the new computer’s price rather than the old laptop’s condition or value.
  4. Do not purchase on the assumption that a promotion will apply later, and do not ship until you understand what happens if the device is rejected.

If no consumer promotion is listed, HP’s support page can direct you to available trade-in, return-for-cash, donation, or recycling options for your location. Availability and terms can vary by country.
