Target’s current pages give conflicting instructions. Its main help article says you need a Target account to check a GiftCard balance online, while its fraud-prevention page still sends customers to a guest balance-check URL. If the guest page redirects you to sign in or does not show a form, Target’s clearly documented account-free option is to call 1-800-544-2943.
Use only Target-owned pages for online checks. Fake balance-check websites can capture the card number and access code and drain the balance.

Does checking a Target GiftCard balance require an account?

The contradiction is between Target’s balance-help article and its fraud-prevention page. Target does not clearly explain whether the guest route is being phased out, limited to certain users, or affected by a site change.
Try Target’s official guest balance page
Target’s security page identifies https://www.target.com/guest/gift-card-balance as a guest balance-check location. Enter the card details only if that page displays Target’s own balance form.

- Enter the physical card’s 15-digit number.
- Enter the access number or PIN beneath the silver scratch-off strip.
- Submit the form and follow any on-screen instructions.
The guest page may instead redirect to sign-in, show an error, or load without the interactive form. Do not switch to a random “Target balance” result. Use the phone method below if the official page does not work.
Check the balance by phone without creating an account
Call 1-800-544-2943 and follow the automated prompts. Target says this service can provide the card balance and the last five transactions. This is the least ambiguous official alternative for someone who does not want a Target account.
Use Target’s standard online balance page
Target’s help article directs customers to https://www.target.com/giftcard/check-balance.
- Enter the 15-digit card number.
- Enter the access number or PIN under the silver strip.
- Sign in or create a Target account if Target requires it before displaying the balance.
An event or sequence number printed on a physical card is not needed for this balance check.

If the GiftCard is already saved to your account
Target app
Open My Target, go to Settings, choose Gift cards, and review the saved card’s balance.
Target.com
Open the account or name menu, choose My Target, then Gift cards. Target’s labels can change; the relevant functions are the saved GiftCard list and balance view.
Physical and digital cards follow different rules
Physical Target GiftCards
Balance checks use the 15-digit card number and the access number or PIN. Gently scratch the silver strip to reveal the access number. Keep both numbers private.
Email eGiftCards
Target says an emailed eGiftCard must be opened within a Target.com account to view or use it.

Mobile or text GiftCards
Target says an account is required to access and redeem these cards in stores or online.
Why might Target be adding an account gate?
Target’s fraud-prevention material focuses on stolen card numbers and access codes. That makes fraud controls a possible reason for stricter online access, but Target does not explicitly say that fraud prevention caused the account requirement. Treat the account message as a current site rule, not as a confirmed explanation of its origin.
Protect the card credentials
- Use pages whose address ends in target.com, including Target’s security subdomain.
- Never post the card number or access code in a comment, forum, screenshot or message.
- Do not enter those details into an unrelated balance-checking website. Target warns that scammers use fake services to harvest gift-card credentials.
- Do not confuse a Target GiftCard with a Visa, Mastercard or American Express gift card; those cards use the issuer’s own balance service.
Troubleshooting common problems
The guest page redirects to sign-in
That behavior is consistent with Target’s help article saying an account is required for online checks. Call 1-800-544-2943 instead of using an unofficial site.
The access number is unreadable
For a physical card, inspect the silver strip carefully. If the card is already saved to an account, Target says the access number can be requested on Target.com; it emails the number to the account address, and this request is not currently available through the app.

The balance shows zero
Check the card number and access number again. A zero may mean the card was redeemed, never activated, deactivated, or tampered with. Target warns that altered packaging or exposed credentials can indicate fraud.
The card is damaged, lost or unreadable
Target says a damaged or defective barcode may qualify for replacement through 1-800-544-2943, generally with the original receipt. If the barcode is intact, a local store may be able to scan and replace the card when the access code remains legible. A lost card with an available balance may also be replaceable through the GiftCard team with the original receipt; partially used cards are replaced for the remaining balance. These are policy conditions, not guarantees, and Target may reject or deactivate cards for suspected fraud or abuse.
The digital card is missing
Check the Target account associated with the email or mobile delivery. Target lists 1-800-591-3869 for digital-card resend and support issues.
You want a store to check it
You can ask Guest Services, especially when a card is damaged or the website fails. Target’s published material clearly documents the online and telephone methods, but does not promise that every store will perform a balance inquiry.

No Target account? Try Target’s official guest page at target.com/guest/gift-card-balance. If it redirects, fails or lacks a form, call 1-800-544-2943. Target’s own pages currently conflict, so never submit your card details to a third-party balance-checking site.
