The “next 4 to 6 months” forecast was made in May 2024, not now. Craig Moffett of MoffettNathanson predicted that Dish could file for bankruptcy after EchoStar disclosed funding pressure and a November 2024 debt maturity. DISH DBS filing entities later entered Chapter 11 in June 2026, then emerged on October 1, 2026, after their plan was confirmed. That later proceeding did not occur within the forecast window.
Who made the forecast, and when?
PhoneArena reported on May 12, 2024, that Craig Moffett, senior managing director at MoffettNathanson, expected Dish to file for bankruptcy within four to six months. The forecast followed EchoStar’s May 8, 2024, first-quarter earnings report. It was an analyst forecast reported by PhoneArena—not a company prediction or a confirmed filing date. The period described in that headline elapsed in 2024. It should not be read as a current warning or as a prediction that a filing would occur in 2026.
Why was bankruptcy being discussed?
PhoneArena tied the forecast to reported liquidity pressure and a $2 billion payment due in November 2024. In its account of the earnings call, EchoStar CFO and EVP Paul Orban said the company was discussing funding with potential sources and did not have cash on hand for the payment. Those were statements reported in 2024; they do not describe EchoStar’s present financial position.

PhoneArena reproduces this incomplete fragment attributed to Orban: “We do not currently have necessary cash on hand, or projected future cash flows, to fund fourth quarter operations or the” debt coming due in November. The source cuts off mid-sentence, so the fragment cannot be treated as a complete quotation.
What happened after the forecast?
EchoStar’s Form 8-K filed October 2, 2026, reports a later Chapter 11 process involving specified DISH DBS and DISH Wireless filing entities. The disclosed dates show that the DISH DBS entities’ proceeding came well after the 2024 forecast window:

- October 1, 2026: That plan became effective and the DISH DBS filing entities emerged from bankruptcy.
EchoStar reported that the restructuring, repayment in full of July 2026 7.75% senior notes, and partial early repayment of December 2026 5.25% senior secured notes reduced aggregate outstanding indebtedness by approximately $4.35 billion, according to EchoStar Corporation’s 2026 Form 8-K. Did all DISH entities emerge from bankruptcy?
No. The same 2026 filing identifies DISH Wireless filing entities separately and says the originally joint plan was divided into separate DISH DBS and DISH Wireless plans. The filing establishes that the DISH DBS entities emerged on October 1; it does not establish that the DISH Wireless entities emerged on that date.

How should the forecast be judged?
The forecast and the later case are separate events on different timelines. Moffett’s reported four-to-six-month window began in May 2024; the DISH DBS filing entities entered Chapter 11 in June 2026. The later filing does not show that the 2024 forecast was accurate on its stated schedule, nor does the available reporting establish that the 2024 liquidity concerns caused the 2026 filing. Chapter 11 is a restructuring process, not by itself proof that a business has been liquidated.
