The three common resume layouts are reverse chronological, functional, and combination. Choose based on the evidence you need an employer to see: use reverse chronology when relevant experience and career progression tell the story; use a combination format when transferable skills need emphasis alongside a clear work history; and use a functional format selectively when skills matter more than job sequence. “Targeted” usually describes tailoring a resume to a specific opening, not a separate layout. Federal applications, academic CVs, and creative resumes may follow different conventions.

How the main resume formats differ

CareerOneStop advises choosing the style that best features your work experience and skills. The layouts below organize the same kinds of facts differently; none guarantees an interview or selection.

Format What leads Good fit Main trade-off Basic structure
Reverse chronological (often called chronological) Work history, starting with the current or most recent role Relevant, continuous experience or progression in the same or an adjacent field Gaps and career changes are easy to see; each entry needs clear dates and evidence of results. Name and contact details; optional summary; reverse-chronological experience with role, employer, dates, and accomplishment bullets; education; skills.
Functional (skills-based) Skill categories and evidence grouped by ability A deliberate career change or limited direct experience when transferable proof is stronger than the job-title sequence Can obscure when and where skills were used, and some ATS may parse it poorly. Name and contact details; role-focused summary; two to four relevant skill groups with evidence; concise employment list retaining employers, titles, and dates; education.
Combination (hybrid) A short skills summary followed by detailed work history When transferable skills matter but employers still need a clear chronology Can become repetitive or too long if the skills section and work history repeat the same achievements. Name and contact details; short targeted summary; two or three skill headings with selected evidence; reverse-chronological experience with distinct results; education; relevant skills.
Targeted content Qualifications and achievements most relevant to a particular opening Any applicant applying to a specific role or employer Requires updating for materially different roles; do not claim skills or use job language that does not accurately describe your experience. Start with the best-fitting layout, then select and order truthful accomplishments and relevant terminology for the role.

Reverse chronological

Operations Coordinator, Northstar Services, 2022–2025 — Coordinated a weekly schedule across 8 service teams; reduced unresolved handoffs by 20%. Earlier roles follow in reverse date order.

Functional

Process coordination — Coordinated weekly schedules across service teams; reduced unresolved handoffs by 20%. Follow the skill evidence with a concise employment history that still lists employers, titles, and dates.

Combination

Project coordination — Coordinated weekly schedules across service teams. Then show the relevant role in the dated work history, with distinct evidence rather than repeating the same achievement verbatim.

Which resume format should you choose?

  1. Start with the job. If your recent experience directly supports the target role, lead with reverse-chronological work history.
  2. For a career change, collect transferable proof. Look beyond paid jobs to relevant volunteering, education, projects, and activities. A combination format often lets you foreground those skills without losing the context of where and when you used them.
  3. Use a functional layout selectively. It can put skill evidence first when direct experience is limited, but keep employer, title, and date information easy to find. Do not use it to disguise employment gaps.
  4. Tailor a version to each materially different opening. Emphasize relevant accomplishments and qualifications, and use recognizable terminology from the posting only when it truthfully describes your experience. A longer master inventory can help you choose what to include.
  5. For a government role, read the active vacancy. Use the announcement and current USAJOBS application directions rather than assuming a private-sector resume convention applies.
  6. For academic or international applications, check local expectations. A teaching or research employer may expect a CV; in some countries, “CV” is the ordinary term for a job-application resume.
  7. For creative work, weigh the recipient and application method. An infographic may suit a relevant visual role, but keep a conventional version available for employers or systems that do not accept visual layouts.

Should you use the same resume for different positions?

Usually, tailor it for each materially different position. Penn Career Services notes that applicants targeting different fields may adjust a resume to highlight related skills or qualifications. Keep the underlying facts consistent, but change which accurate evidence leads. A resume aimed at project coordination, for example, can foreground scheduling and cross-team work; another aimed at operations may lead with process improvement.

What if you lack experience in the field?

Identify evidence of the work’s underlying skills, even if the setting or title differs. Relevant projects, coursework, volunteer responsibilities, and accomplishments in other jobs can help demonstrate transferable ability. A combination layout can connect that evidence to its context. A functional format is another option when skill evidence should lead, but retain a readable employment timeline rather than leaving employers to infer it.

Can a resume format beat an applicant tracking system?

No layout guarantees that an ATS will read a file correctly or that an employer will select it. ATS software varies; CareerOneStop and Penn warn that some systems can scramble tables, text boxes, columns, logos, images, graphics, or important text placed in headers and footers. To reduce formatting risk, use a clean, consistent, single-column design, readable fonts, and standard headings such as “Work Experience,” “Education,” and “Skills.” Follow the employer’s requested file type; CareerOneStop recommends PDF when no format is specified.

An ATS is software employers may use to collect or review application information. Matching terms from a job description can help make relevant qualifications recognizable, but use them accurately. Penn describes tools such as Jobscan as ways to compare a resume with a loaded job description; such comparisons do not establish that a format or keyword score guarantees consideration.

The consulted guidance offers recommendations, not controlled evidence that one resume type produces better hiring outcomes. Treat ATS-friendly formatting as a way to reduce avoidable readability problems, not a way to guarantee results.

When a standard private-sector resume is not the right document

Federal resume

Federal applications may call for information beyond a conventional private-sector resume. Depending on the vacancy and applicant’s status, the Department of Labor says details may include the announcement number, title and grade; expanded contact, education, and experience information; and eligibility documents such as veteran records or a Description of Service. Federal resumes are commonly longer, and the Department advises against removing important details solely to force a one- or two-page limit. Requirements vary, so follow the active announcement and official application instructions. As the Department’s guidance puts it, “One size never fits all.”

Academic CV

A CV is generally a fuller academic record for teaching or research applications and may include publications, presentations, courses taught, and other academic history. The distinction between “resume” and “CV” is not universal: check the employer and the country’s convention.

Infographic or creative resume

A visual resume may be relevant in fields such as graphic design, marketing, or public relations, where presentation itself can help communicate creative work. American University notes that many nonprofits, government agencies, and Capitol Hill positions will not accept infographic resumes. Use one only when it suits the recipient and submission method, and maintain a conventional resume as well.
