Did Social Security Move All Public Communication to X? What the Evidence Shows

A 2025 report described an SSA plan to use X for program and service announcements, but current agency pages show website news and multiple communication channels continue.

No evidence establishes that the Social Security Administration moved all public communication to X. In April 2025, WIRED reported that SSA planned to use X for press and public updates about program and service changes, citing remarks attributed to a regional commissioner at a managers’ meeting. The White House disputed the report’s characterization. As of October 4, 2026, SSA’s public website still lists press releases, blog posts and advocate updates, while its social-media page presents X as one channel among several.

What did the April 2025 report say?

WIRED reported on April 11, 2025, that SSA would stop issuing press releases and “Dear Colleague” letters about program and service changes and instead use X to communicate with the press and public. WIRED attributed that description to regional commissioner Linda Kerr-Davis speaking during a meeting with managers.

The distinction matters: WIRED reported an intended change based on its account of an internal meeting. Its article did not reproduce a written SSA directive establishing the policy’s scope. The exact instructions, their duration and how they were implemented therefore remain unverified.

How did the White House respond?

In WIRED’s April 11, 2025 coverage, White House spokesperson Liz Huston called the reporting misleading and said SSA was actively communicating with beneficiaries and stakeholders. That was a contemporaneous rebuttal; it does not, on its own, resolve what managers were told or whether a narrower change to particular announcements was planned.

What does SSA publish through its official channels now?

SSA’s website

As of October 4, 2026, SSA’s Communications Corner lists press releases, blog posts and advocate updates, including entries dated through October 1, 2026. That shows official website-based news continued. It does not establish every internal communication practice or disprove that SSA changed how it handles a particular category of announcement.

Social media and other channels

SSA’s Social Media Hub describes X as a place for timely program updates and quick responses, alongside other social platforms and the Choose Work blog. The agency’s FY 2025–2026 Annual Performance Plan also describes a goal of implementing a modern, unified customer-communication platform and integrating service channels, with improvements to online and phone services. The plan does not identify X as an exclusive channel.

What should beneficiaries and stakeholders do?

  • For durable agency announcements: Check SSA’s Communications Corner, which continues to list official news items.
  • For quick social updates: SSA identifies X as one of its channels, not the only one.
  • For account or service needs: Use SSA’s online and phone service options rather than relying on a social-media post as a substitute for individual assistance.

The available evidence does not quantify which channel reaches more people or is more accessible. The practical point is that a social post and an agency-hosted notice serve different functions: SSA’s public listings preserve news on its own website, while X is presented as one way to share timely updates.

Is the claim that “all communication” moved to X accurate?

That wording is broader than the evidence supports. The 2025 report concerned planned communication about programmatic and service changes, as described in an internal meeting account. Current SSA pages show that website news and multiple public channels continued. Without the underlying meeting record or a final written directive, the precise scope and implementation of the reported plan remain unsettled.
