Probably—but not officially confirmed. Canalys estimated that Samsung shipped 13.5 million Galaxy S24-series phones in Q1 2024, above outside reports of a 12-million initial target or a revised target of about 13 million. Samsung said S24 sales were strong, but its public Q1 results did not confirm a unit target or disclose S24 sell-through.
What the reported target and shipment estimate show
The relevant period is January 1 through March 31, 2024. The figures point to a likely target beat, but they do not amount to an official Samsung confirmation.
| Measure | Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Reported initial target | 12 million units | Outside reporting on Samsung’s reported goal for the Galaxy S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra combined; not stated as a confirmed target in Samsung’s public Q1 results. Android Headlines |
| Reported revised target | About 13 million units | Another outside report described a higher target; the public record cited here does not establish when or formally how it changed. Android Headlines |
| Q1 S24-series shipments | 13.5 million | Canalys estimate for the series, not a Samsung-reported consumer sell-through figure. Canalys |
| Implied excess over the revised target | About 500,000 units, or 3.8% | Arithmetic comparing Canalys’ estimate with the reported 13-million figure; neither input is an official Samsung unit result. |
| Year-over-year comparison | 35% growth | Canalys’ reported Q1 shipment growth versus the Galaxy S23 series in its comparable quarter; launch timing differed. |
Canalys’ post discusses shipments. Shipments generally track units entering the distribution channel; they are not the same as sell-through, or purchases by end customers. The 13.5-million estimate therefore supports a likely target achievement on a shipment basis, not a precise count of consumers who bought the phones.
What Samsung officially confirmed
Samsung’s Q1 results said strong Galaxy S24-series sales helped its Mobile eXperience (MX) business achieve revenue and operating-profit growth, and that Galaxy AI features contributed to sales expansion. The company did not publish a product-level S24 unit tally, confirm either reported target, or state that it had shipped 13.5 million units. Samsung’s Q1 2024 results and its earnings-call script are useful for separating the company’s statements from market estimates.

Samsung reported KRW 33.53 trillion in MX and Networks revenue and KRW 3.51 trillion in operating profit for the quarter. The earnings-call script also gives 60 million smartphone shipments, 7 million tablet shipments and an approximate $336 smartphone average selling price for MX. Those are business-wide figures, not S24-only measurements. Samsung’s results release
Why the quarter looked strong—and what complicates the comparison
Earlier availability than the Galaxy S23
The S24 launched in January 2024, earlier than the S23’s launch in 2023. That gave the newer series more time to accumulate shipments within Q1. Canalys’ 35% comparison is a year-over-year quarterly shipment comparison, not a like-for-like count over an identical number of days after launch. It signals stronger reported quarterly volume, but timing is part of the result. Canalys

Galaxy AI and premium demand
Samsung placed Galaxy AI features, including Circle to Search, at the center of the S24’s pitch. The company attributed part of sales expansion to Galaxy AI, but it did not quantify AI’s contribution or establish that AI alone caused the result. Samsung’s Q1 outlook also described a seasonally weaker overall smartphone market alongside comparatively stronger prospects for the premium segment. Regional momentum is not a global unit count
Contemporaneous coverage cited early strength in the United States and parts of Europe, but regional data should not be mistaken for a global sell-through total. For example, Reuters reported on U.S. smartphone sales in January using Counterpoint data; that market-specific account cannot independently verify Samsung’s worldwide S24 result. How the S24 result fits Samsung’s wider phone business
Samsung’s 60 million Q1 smartphone shipments covered its full portfolio, including the mass-market Galaxy A range, rather than just the S24 family. The S24 estimate is therefore a flagship-line measure; it should not be treated as the explanation for every Samsung shipment or as equivalent to total-company smartphone growth.
Samsung’s interim report lists a 20.3% global smartphone market-share figure sourced to TechInsights. Canalys-related market coverage also put Samsung at about 20% share and roughly 60 million shipments in Q1. Those broader figures speak to Samsung’s position across its whole phone lineup, not whether the S24 independently met a target. Samsung’s Q1 interim report and Q1 market coverage

What the available figures cannot settle
- The exact number of S24-series phones purchased by consumers by March 31.
- Whether the 13-million figure was a formal revised internal target, when it changed, or who set it.
- The shipment or sales split among the S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra.
- How much of the global estimate came from particular regions, or how much inventory remained in channels at quarter-end.
Revenue and profit growth reinforce Samsung’s description of a strong launch, but they do not by themselves prove a unit target was reached: product mix, average selling prices and other business factors affect financial results. The clearest defensible conclusion is narrower: Canalys’ estimated shipments exceeded both reported target figures, while Samsung’s own public results confirmed strong sales without confirming the target or a unit total.
