Did Pump.Fun Cofounder Dylan Kerler Make a Small Fortune Dumping His Own Coins as a Teen?

WIRED and CertiK found circumstantial evidence tying Pump.Fun cofounder Dylan Kerler to eight 2017 coin launches and estimated up to $75,000 in cryptocurrency at the time. Here is what that evidence proves, what it does not, and why Pump.Fun's standardized contracts cannot prevent soft rug pulls.

Possibly, but it has not been proved. WIRED found circumstantial on-chain, forum and identity evidence linking Pump.Fun cofounder Dylan Kerler to eight 2017 coin launches, including eBitcoinCash and EthereumCash. CertiK estimated that the wallets associated with the projects controlled up to $75,000 worth of cryptocurrency at 2017 prices. That supports the description of a potential small fortune, not a finding that Kerler personally committed fraud or still holds that wealth.

What the investigation actually connects to Dylan Kerler

WIRED reported that the person promoting eight coins in 2017 used the name Dylan Kerler. The Pump.Fun cofounder was 16 that year. The two projects that drew the most attention were eBitcoinCash and EthereumCash, both of which gained visibility on BitcoinTalk and later collapsed. Investors described the failures as rug pulls.

The identity connection is built from several circumstantial clues rather than a single public admission:

  • BitcoinTalk accounts named DOMAINBROKER and ninjagod were linked to the projects.
  • An email associated with one account contained Kerler’s name.
  • Forum posts referred to Dylan Kerler as the developer.
  • Code was shared across multiple projects.
  • Posts and other records supplied Brighton location clues.
  • Wallet movements connected the launches to the same activity pattern.

WIRED reported that Kerler and Pump.Fun did not respond to its requests for comment. The reporting does not cite a court judgment or regulator finding that Kerler committed fraud.

What the money estimate means

CertiK’s analysis estimated a maximum of $75,000 in cryptocurrency valued at 2017 prices. WIRED said the same holdings would have been worth about $400,000 at prices around its publication. Those are valuation comparisons, not evidence that the assets were sold at the later price, converted to cash, or retained by Kerler.

Why eBitcoinCash and EthereumCash are central to the allegation

Both coins attracted early buyers and then lost value rapidly. CertiK chief security officer Tielei Wang told WIRED: “After waiting for the market share and price to rise, they quickly cashed out and exited. We strongly suspect that [EthereumCash] was used by the developer for a rug pull.” The statement describes CertiK’s suspicion, not an adjudicated fact.

WIRED also reproduced a contemporaneous post from a developer account: “It is going to be like a pump and dump where early investors make their money back. Sorry for being brutally honest but it’s the truth.” The account was identified in WIRED’s BitcoinTalk review; the article does not establish that the later Pump.Fun cofounder personally wrote those words.

2017 launches versus Pump.Fun

Pump.Fun launched in January 2024 with Noah Tweedale, Alon Cohen and Dylan Kerler as cofounders. Its design standardizes token contracts and uses a bonding curve, allowing users to create and trade memecoins without writing a bespoke contract. The relevant comparison is not simply whether a token can fail, but how the contract, creator wallets, disclosures and platform incentives shape that risk.

Comparison axis 2017 activity described by WIRED and CertiK Pump.Fun model and reported scale
Contract design Separate projects, with shared code reported across launches. Standardized token code and a bonding curve are built into the launch flow.
Insider selling Wallet movements and rapid exits were cited as evidence supporting a possible rug pull. Standard contracts do not prevent a creator or early holder from selling into demand.
Identity and disclosure Evidence relied on forum accounts, an email, location clues and wallet links; the identity conclusion remains circumstantial. Creators launch through a public platform, but a platform listing is not a guarantee about a creator’s intentions or holdings.
Fee model No comparable platform fee was identified for the 2017 launches. Dune estimates cited by WIRED put platform revenue above $350 million through a 1 percent trading cut.
Observed scale WIRED identified eight 2017 coins associated with the name Dylan Kerler. Dune estimates cited by WIRED counted more than 5.5 million published memecoins.
Legal status No cited court or regulator finding establishes fraud by Kerler. Whether a token launch or sale violates law depends on jurisdiction, promises, disclosures and investor reliance; the platform’s existence does not settle that question.

The revenue and token-count figures are third-party estimates tied to the reporting period, not audited company disclosures.

Why standardized contracts do not eliminate rug pulls

Hard rug pulls

A hard rug pull uses malicious or abusive contract powers, such as blocking sells, changing balances or taking users’ funds. Standardized contracts can remove or limit some of those functions because every launch follows the platform’s template. That lowers one category of technical risk, but it does not make a token safe.

Soft rug pulls

A soft rug pull can happen without an exploit. A creator or coordinated group buys early, promotes the token, and sells into later demand. The contract may work exactly as designed while outside buyers absorb the losses. Wallet concentration, timing and public claims therefore matter as much as the contract’s code.

A Gen Z Quant episode reported one example: a US teenager spent about $350 for 51 million tokens, sold eight minutes later for nearly $30,000, and then made more than $50,000 across three coins. That account illustrates how a creator can exit into demand; it is not proof that every Pump.Fun launch is fraudulent.

What Pump.Fun’s founders say about the design

Noah Tweedale described the motivation this way: “Buying into memecoins was a very unsafe thing to do … Everything was designed to suck money out of people. The idea with Pump was to build something where everyone was on the same playing field.” A standardized launch process may make the mechanics more uniform, but equal access to a market does not create equal information, equal capital or equal selling discipline.

How much confidence should a reader place in the allegation?

The strongest defensible conclusion is narrow: WIRED assembled evidence linking Kerler to the 2017 launches, and CertiK estimated cryptocurrency proceeds that could amount to a small fortune by 2017 standards. The evidence does not prove that Kerler personally executed a fraud, that every associated token was deliberately deceptive, or that the estimated holdings became present-day wealth.

“Rug pull” is also a descriptive term, not a universal legal category. Authorities would examine the specific promises made, what buyers were told, who controlled the wallets, whether purchasers relied on representations, and the law of the relevant jurisdiction. A technically valid sale can still raise legal questions if marketing or conduct was deceptive; conversely, a sharp price collapse alone does not establish fraud.

Bottom line for prospective memecoin buyers

Treat the story as an evidence-based allegation with a quantified estimate, not a proven confession. Before buying any memecoin, inspect creator and insider wallets, look for concentrated holdings and rapid transfers, read the contract permissions, and assume that a platform’s standard code cannot stop insiders from selling. The historical evidence may explain why readers ask about Kerler’s teenage launches, but it cannot establish his current wealth or determine liability on its own.
