Did PS5 and Xbox Sales Really Fall 70% in 2025? The November U.S. Figures

No: the widely reported 70% drop was for Xbox Series hardware sales in the U.S. in November 2025 compared with November 2024—not for all of 2025. PS5 sales were reported down more than 40% over that same month-to-month comparison. Those are steep monthly declines, but they do not establish either console’s full-year sales trend.

What the 70% figure actually measures

December 2025 coverage of Circana data reported that Xbox Series hardware sales in the U.S. fell 70% in November 2025 year over year. The comparison is November 2025 against November 2024, not 2025 against 2024 as a whole. The figure is for hardware sales, not Xbox revenue, active users, subscriptions, or worldwide sales. Windows Central’s report of the November results provides the original context.

How PS5 and the wider U.S. hardware market performed

The same report put PS5 U.S. sales down more than 40% year over year in November 2025. Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 combined were reported down around 10% in U.S. units over the same comparison. These are not identical declines, and the figures should not be read as a ranking of lifetime demand or platform health.

Measure November 2025 result What it describes
Xbox Series hardware sales Down 70% year over year U.S. November sales versus November 2024, as reported from Circana data
PS5 sales Down more than 40% year over year U.S. November sales versus November 2024, as reported from Circana data
Switch and Switch 2 combined unit sales Down around 10% year over year U.S. November units versus November 2024, as reported in the same coverage
All video game hardware spending Down 27% to $695 million U.S. dollar spending in November 2025 versus November 2024
All video game hardware units sold 1.6 million U.S. hardware units sold in November 2025; the reported figure is not a console-specific total

The 27% spending decline is a dollar measure across video game hardware, while the 1.6 million figure is a unit count. Neither is an Xbox-only or PS5-only number. A drop in spending can reflect fewer units sold, changes in the mix of products purchased, prices, or a combination; this report alone does not quantify each factor’s contribution.

Do the November results prove console sales fell for all of 2025?

No. A single month’s year-over-year comparison cannot establish a calendar-year trend. Circana later reported that total U.S. consumer spending on video game hardware, content, and accessories reached $60.7 billion in 2025, up 1.4% from 2024. That aggregate includes several categories and does not give full-year PS5 or Xbox unit sales. Circana’s 2025 market summary is useful for broad market context, but it cannot be used to claim that either console gained or lost sales over the full year.

Could higher console prices explain the declines?

Price increases and affordability were discussed as possible context for weaker hardware sales in 2025. TechRadar’s coverage raises those factors as possible contributors. They are not proof that price alone caused the November declines: the reported comparison does not isolate the effect of prices from other influences, and it does not establish a definitive cause for either platform’s result.

What a console shopper can—and cannot—take from this

For a household deciding whether to buy a console, these market-wide sales percentages are not a direct measure of which system offers better value. The figures do not compare current console prices or availability, game libraries, or subscription services. They also do not establish worldwide sales, full-year model-specific unit totals, or why November sales changed. Treat the 70% headline as a striking but narrowly scoped U.S. monthly statistic, rather than a verdict on the Xbox brand or the console market for the year.
