Party City Holdco Inc. announced on December 21, 2024, that it would wind down its U.S. retail and wholesale operations, with going-out-of-business sales at approximately 700 stores. The company also said it and certain subsidiaries had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. That ended the former standalone U.S. store operation; it did not eliminate every Party City-branded business or product.

What Party City announced in December 2024

Party City Holdco Inc. (PCHI) said it would wind down its U.S. retail and wholesale operations and begin going-out-of-business sales at approximately 700 stores nationwide. PCHI also announced voluntary Chapter 11 filings for itself and certain subsidiaries. The announcement followed the company’s efforts to find a way to continue operating, which it said had been undermined by inflationary pressure on costs and consumer spending, among other factors. That explanation is the company’s account, not an independent finding of every cause behind the wind-down. PCHI’s December 21, 2024 announcement.

The announcement described the end of the U.S. standalone retail and wholesale operation. It should not be read as proof that all Party City-branded activity everywhere stopped.

Why store counts differ

Figures reported at different times describe different scopes, so they should not be treated as one exact store count.

Date Company-reported figure What it describes
September 6, 2023 More than 800 locations Company-owned, franchise and seasonal locations cited when PCHI announced its emergence from Chapter 11. PCHI’s 2023 announcement.
August 31, 2024 748 specialty party-supply stores North American total, including franchise stores, in a PCHI SEC filing. PCHI’s SEC filing.
December 21, 2024 Approximately 700 stores Stores nationwide included in PCHI’s announced U.S. going-out-of-business sales. PCHI’s wind-down announcement.

The date, geography and location categories differ across these figures. The approximately 700 figure is an estimate in the wind-down announcement, not an exact final count of stores that closed.

How the wind-down followed an earlier bankruptcy

The December 2024 filing was not PCHI’s first Chapter 11 case in this period. The company and certain subsidiaries filed in January 2023, then announced on September 6, 2023, that they had emerged from bankruptcy. PCHI’s emergence announcement cited a $562 million exit asset-based lending facility and a $75 million new-money investment. Those were financing figures reported at the time of the 2023 restructuring; they do not describe the terms or outcome of the later wind-down. PCHI’s 2023 announcement.

What happened to the Party City brand and products

The brand and related assets were sold

On February 7, 2025, PCHI announced that New Amscan PC, LLC, an affiliate of Ad Populum, had won the bid for the Party City brand and related Amscan operating assets. PCHI reported a net bid value of $20 million. A sale of brand and operating assets is distinct from reopening the former U.S. standalone store chain. PCHI’s February 7, 2025 announcement.

Party City products returned to U.S. retail through Staples

On April 21, 2026, Staples and Party City announced that Party City products were available in more than 700 Staples locations and on Staples.com, with further store expansion planned by the end of 2026. The announcement confirms branded product availability through Staples, not the return of Party City’s old standalone stores. Its planned expansion is not confirmation that every intended location is already carrying the products. Check Staples for the specific product and store you need. Is Party City still open in Canada?

Party City Canada says its operations are entirely separate from Party City Holdco in the United States and that it remains open online and in stores. Canadian shoppers can use the Party City Canada location finder to check local availability. This separate Canadian operation is not evidence that the former U.S. store fleet reopened.
