Not directly. Kenworth’s published result is an up to 136% improvement in freight efficiency versus its 2009 Kenworth T660, measured in ton-miles per gallon. That is not the same as a verified 50% reduction in a fleet’s fuel bill. Actual savings would depend on fuel prices, payload, route, speed, weather, and duty cycle.
What Kenworth actually measured
Kenworth Truck Company reported in 2024 that SuperTruck 2 surpassed its target of doubling freight efficiency over the 2009 T660, achieving an improvement of up to 136%. Freight efficiency measures how many tons of cargo a truck moves for each gallon of diesel (ton-miles per gallon), rather than gallons consumed by an empty or lightly loaded tractor.
A 136% improvement means the tested truck achieved 2.36 times the baseline freight efficiency under the applicable test conditions. If two trucks moved the same payload over the same route and the result transferred perfectly to real-world operation, the arithmetic would imply about 57.6% less fuel for that freight task (1 − 1/2.36). That is a derived comparison, not Kenworth’s published fuel-bill result, and it does not account for fuel prices or operating differences.
Why “50% lower fuel bills” is too broad
A fuel bill is a dollar amount. Freight efficiency is a laboratory or demonstration performance metric. The two can diverge when trucks carry different loads, run different routes, spend different amounts of time idling, or operate in different weather and traffic.

- Fuel price: A percentage change in gallons does not produce the same percentage change in dollars when diesel prices vary by location and date.
- Payload: Ton-miles per gallon credits a truck for the freight moved. Comparing tractor mpg without equal payloads can misstate the benefit.
- Duty cycle: Long-haul highway operation, regional delivery, grades, congestion and stop-and-go work stress efficiency systems differently.
- Availability and maintenance: A research demonstrator’s technology, service requirements and uptime may not match a production fleet’s economics.
Therefore, the strongest defensible statement is that SuperTruck 2 demonstrated up to 136% better freight efficiency against the 2009 T660 baseline—not that every operator will cut its fuel bill in half.
How many miles per gallon did SuperTruck 2 get?
Kenworth’s headline figure is not a simple tractor-only mpg rating. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2024 summary says every SuperTruck 2 team achieved more than a 100% freight-efficiency improvement, and some demonstrations exceeded 16 miles per gallon of diesel. The DOE summary does not establish one universal SuperTruck 2 mpg number for every route, payload or test configuration.

Technology behind the efficiency gain
Diesel power matched to a hybrid electrical system
The demonstrator uses a PACCAR MX-11 diesel engine rated at 440 horsepower, a PACCAR TX-12 automated transmission and a 48-volt electric generator with a mild-hybrid system. Next-generation lithium-ion batteries recharge through regenerative braking, recovering energy that would otherwise be lost as heat.

- AMT Kenworth Model Kit
Electrified accessories
Electric fans, steering, coolant pumps and HVAC pumps can run when needed instead of being driven continuously by the engine. Kenworth says the engine fan alone can draw up to 80 horsepower, so reducing unnecessary fan demand can free power for propulsion.
Engine-off hoteling
An overnight hoteling solution is designed to provide sleeper-cab functions without running the main engine continuously. Less idling can reduce fuel use during rest periods, although real savings depend on how a truck is operated and how the system is maintained.

Waste heat and aftertreatment work
The program also investigated waste-heat recovery and aftertreatment improvements. DOE reported that all SuperTruck 2 teams demonstrated more than 52% engine brake thermal efficiency, with three teams demonstrating pathways to 55%. Brake thermal efficiency describes how effectively engine fuel energy becomes useful engine work; it is not a direct fuel-bill percentage.
Aerodynamic redesign
Extensive aerodynamic improvements reduce drag at highway speed. The benefit is strongest in the operating conditions for which the package was designed and can be smaller in slow, urban or highly variable duty cycles.

Why the project matters to household finances and freight prices
Trucks carry about 80% of U.S. goods, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2016 transportation overview. The same source estimates that trucks use about 28 billion gallons of fuel annually—approximately 22% of transportation energy use. More efficient heavy trucks could eventually reduce carriers’ exposure to diesel-price swings, but a prototype result does not automatically lower retail prices or guarantee lower delivery charges.
Any pass-through to consumers would depend on whether production trucks adopted the technology, the added equipment cost, financing, maintenance, regulatory requirements, fleet replacement cycles and competition in freight markets.
Is Kenworth SuperTruck 2 for sale?
The documented vehicle is a research demonstrator developed by Kenworth with the U.S. Department of Energy. The available results do not identify a retail SuperTruck 2 model, consumer ordering process, catalog price or Amazon product. Do not treat the demonstrator’s specifications as a promise that a production tractor with the same package can be purchased.
How to evaluate a real truck’s fuel-saving claim
- Identify the metric. Confirm whether the claim is mpg, gallons per mile, ton-miles per gallon or a percentage against a named baseline.
- Match the baseline. Check the baseline truck’s model year, engine, transmission, trailer, payload and aerodynamic equipment.
- Match the duty cycle. Compare similar routes, grades, speeds, temperatures, traffic and idling patterns.
- Convert gallons to dollars. Multiply measured fuel use by the fleet’s actual diesel price and include recurring maintenance, battery and system costs.
- Check production status. Verify that the claimed equipment is available, supported and emissions-compliant for the intended market.
- Use total cost of ownership. Include acquisition, financing, uptime, repairs, driver operation and resale value instead of relying on a headline percentage.
Bottom line for the 50% claim
SuperTruck 2 produced an extraordinary demonstration result: up to 136% higher freight efficiency than Kenworth’s 2009 T660, while DOE reported more than 100% improvement for every SuperTruck 2 team and some demonstrations above 16 diesel mpg. Those figures show what advanced diesel-hybrid, electrified-accessory, regenerative-braking, waste-heat and aerodynamic technologies achieved in testing. They do not establish a universal 50% reduction in fuel bills for today’s truck operators.
