Re:

Did Intel Really Offer More Than $2 Billion for SiFive?

Intel’s reported $2 billion-plus approach to SiFive was never publicly confirmed as a formal offer or completed acquisition. Later announcements document investment and RISC-V collaboration, not a buyout.

A June 2021 report said Intel had offered more than $2 billion to buy RISC-V chip-design company SiFive. That figure was attributed to Bloomberg sources who were not named, and the report described the discussions as early-stage—not a confirmed offer or a completed acquisition. Public announcements since then document Intel investment and business collaboration with SiFive, but do not confirm a takeover.

Where did the $2 billion-plus figure come from?

On June 10, 2021, The Register reported that Intel had offered more than $2 billion for SiFive, attributing the claim to Bloomberg, which cited unnamed sources. The contemporaneous account said discussions were at an early stage and that a deal might not be reached. The public record cited in that report does not establish whether Intel sent a formal written offer, how the reported price was calculated, or whether private talks continued.

Accordingly, the defensible description is that Intel was reportedly interested in acquiring SiFive in 2021. The evidence does not support presenting the $2 billion-plus figure as a confirmed bid or agreed purchase price.

Did Intel acquire SiFive?

The announcements cited here do not document a completed acquisition. Instead, subsequent public updates describe financing and commercial collaboration. That distinction matters: an investment, a technology partnership, and an acquisition are different transactions, and the announcements do not say Intel bought SiFive.

SiFive makes licensable RISC-V processor cores, systems-on-chip and related technology. The 2021 report cited companies using SiFive IP, including Tenstorrent and Samsung, and named the HiFive Unmatched and Learn Inventor development boards. Those product references are historical; they do not establish current availability or support.

What is the documented Intel–SiFive relationship?

Intel Capital invested in SiFive

SiFive announced Intel Capital’s participation in its Series C financing in 2018. In March 2022, SiFive also listed Intel Capital among its existing investors. These announcements establish investment participation, not ownership of the company or an acquisition.

Intel’s foundry business worked with SiFive on RISC-V

Intel announced a $1 billion foundry innovation fund in 2021 and named SiFive among its RISC-V partners. The fund announcement described possible equity, strategic and ecosystem investments, alongside support such as technology co-optimization, wafer shuttles, customer-design assistance, development boards and software infrastructure. The fund’s announced size was not a purchase price for SiFive.

In February 2022, SiFive announced that Intel Foundry Services would work with it on RISC-V platforms optimized for Intel process technology. Intel Foundry Services executive Bob Brennan said the fund would help customers develop modular technology, including SiFive RISC-V processor IP optimized for Intel processes. This is evidence of foundry collaboration, not confirmation of the reported acquisition approach.

How do SiFive’s later financing figures compare with the rumor?

Announcement What was reported What it does—and does not—show
June 2021 report More than $2 billion, described as Intel’s reported offer for SiFive; attributed to unnamed sources via Bloomberg. A reported figure, not a confirmed offer or completed transaction value.
March 2022 SiFive announcement $175 million Series F financing and a company-reported valuation above $2.5 billion. Financing and valuation figures announced by SiFive; neither is an Intel acquisition price.
2026 SiFive announcement $400 million financing and a company-reported valuation of $3.65 billion. Later company-announced financing and valuation; neither confirms Intel’s reported 2021 interest.

Valuation, money raised in a funding round, and an acquisition price describe different things. SiFive’s later financing announcements therefore cannot be treated as proof that Intel made the reported offer, accepted it, or acquired the company.
