What Apple canceled—and what it did not
Apple ended its internally known Project Titan, an autonomous-vehicle program that had reportedly been under development for about a decade. It did not cancel a finished consumer car with published specifications or a confirmed launch date: Apple had not announced a production vehicle, retail price, or definitive self-driving system.
Project Titan’s objectives reportedly shifted over time, including ambitions for a fully autonomous vehicle. The effort was reported canceled in early 2024. Employees were expected to move into other Apple groups, including AI, while some jobs were eliminated. The available account does not establish that every employee moved to AI, or that those who did all worked directly on Siri.
What the 2024 report said about AI and Siri
A 2024 account summarized by Thurrott, citing reporting by The New York Times, described generative AI as a company-level priority. It said senior executives Craig Federighi and John Giannandrea tested ChatGPT and judged Siri to be substantially behind. The report linked the car program’s cancellation and the reassignment of hundreds of employees to a broader effort to accelerate AI work.

Those are attributed accounts of internal discussions and staffing, not an Apple-confirmed explanation. The reporting describes AI as an important factor in the timing and resource shift; it does not prove a simple exchange in which Apple traded a car for a Siri upgrade. Project Titan also reportedly faced changing goals, technical difficulty, cost concerns, and an ambitious timeline.
Why Siri represented more than a voice-assistant problem
The strategic concern was reportedly not just that Siri gave weaker answers than a chatbot. Generative AI agents could become a new way to search, shop, communicate, manage work, and control devices—sometimes completing a task without sending a user through the usual sequence of apps.
If an AI assistant becomes the main interface between people and software, whoever controls that assistant can influence how users find services and get things done. That raises a platform question for Apple: a capable assistant could reinforce the iPhone and its software ecosystem, while a weak one could leave users relying on outside AI providers. The 2024 reporting framed AI as a possible challenge to the iPhone’s role and Apple’s control over the user experience, not merely as a feature race.

Why the car program was exposed to a portfolio rethink
An autonomous vehicle would have taken Apple beyond its established hardware and software businesses into a capital-intensive industry. Developing and selling a vehicle can involve safety validation, regulatory approvals, manufacturing, supply chains, warranties, service operations, and liability. A car could have opened a substantial adjacent market, but the project’s long timeline and reported changes in direction made continued investment a consequential choice.
- Potential case for ending it: AI could affect many Apple products and services at once, while a vehicle would demand major investment in a new operating and manufacturing footprint.
- Potential cost of ending it: Apple gave up the possibility of a new product category after years of work, along with expertise developed in autonomy, sensors, robotics, and complex systems.
- Unresolved question: There is no public basis here to conclude that the car would have succeeded—or that the resources released by ending it made Apple’s AI work successful.
This was a portfolio decision under uncertainty, not proof that autonomous vehicles were unviable or that AI was guaranteed to pay off.
What Apple eventually announced as Siri AI
On June 8, 2026, Apple officially introduced Siri AI as a more conversational assistant powered by the next generation of Apple Intelligence. Apple described capabilities including personal-context understanding, awareness of what is onscreen, answers using broad world knowledge and current web information, and actions across apps. It also announced a dedicated Siri app for revisiting conversations, with Siri AI integrated into a wider set of Apple Intelligence experiences. Apple positioned the work as a systemwide platform effort, not a standalone Siri makeover. Its account of the broader architecture describes Apple Intelligence features across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple Vision Pro, with privacy as a design consideration. The company’s Apple Intelligence overview provides that wider context.
The delay complicates the story of the pivot
The 2024 reporting anticipated a revamped Siri and other AI features around that year’s software announcements. Apple’s most ambitious Siri AI announcement came on June 8, 2026, illustrating that recognizing AI’s strategic urgency and delivering a rebuilt assistant were separate challenges. The eventual product direction supports the idea that Apple made AI a major priority; the time required to announce it cautions against treating reallocation as an immediate solution.

Siri AI availability as of August 18, 2026
Apple’s June 8 announcement said Siri AI was available for developer testing across iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, and visionOS 27, with a watchOS 27 beta planned. A user beta was planned for later in 2026. These were staged test releases, not a claim of general availability everywhere. Apple said initial user availability would be limited to supported devices set to English, with more languages to follow.

Apple’s announced supported-device examples were:
- iPhone 16 models or later, plus iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
- iPad mini with A17 Pro, and iPads and Macs with M1 or later.
- Apple Vision Pro.
- Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch Ultra 2, and Apple Watch SE 3 when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.
Apple said Siri AI would not initially be available on iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS in the European Union because of Digital Markets Act-related issues. It also said Siri AI and other new Apple Intelligence features would not be available in China while regulatory requirements were addressed. The rollout details are from Apple’s dated announcement; beta status, languages, regions, and device support can change.

It supports the broad direction, not every part of the original account. Apple’s product announcement shows that the company pursued a substantial AI and Siri strategy involving personal context, web knowledge, and cross-app actions. It does not confirm that Siri was the sole reason Project Titan ended, that the car would otherwise have reached production, or that most transferred staff worked directly on Siri. Nor does it demonstrate that canceling the car caused Apple’s later AI work to succeed.

Leadership and organization also changed in the intervening period: Apple announced in December 2025 that John Giannandrea would step down from his senior AI role, advise the company, and retire in spring 2026. That transition, described in Apple’s announcement, is a reminder that a company-level AI priority does not depend on one executive or one Siri project.
Was ending Project Titan the right call?
The evidence does not settle that question. AI offered Apple a chance to strengthen the software layer used across its existing devices, potentially with broader reach than a single vehicle. But the company entered a crowded field, abandoned a possible new business, and took years to announce its more ambitious Siri redesign. The available information does not establish the car project’s likely commercial outcome, the returns from the resources redirected, or whether a different investment plan would have produced better results.
