No. The August 2008 reports that AOL planned to sell its northern Virginia data centers and cut operations staff were later described by Data Center Knowledge as inaccurate. AOL said it had no current plans to sell the facilities and no plan to expand or change its existing arrangement with EMCOR.

What the August 2008 report claimed

On August 15, 2008, Data Center Knowledge relayed reports from Valleywag and Silicon Alley Insider that AOL might sell its Manassas Tech Center and Dulles Tech Center, reduce operations staff, and outsource additional operations duties to EMCOR. The publisher later added a correction to the story: “UPDATE: The reports cited in this story were not accurate.” Data Center Knowledge’s August 15 report and correction

That correction means the proposed sale and staff cuts should be treated as unsubstantiated claims, not as confirmed AOL decisions or completed events.

What AOL clarified about the facilities and EMCOR

In a September 3 follow-up, Data Center Knowledge reported that AOL’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications, Anne Bentley, called the stories “dead wrong.” Bentley said: “There is absolutely no truth to the stories,” and “There is no plan to do anything more with Emcor and there are no current plans to sell the data centers.” Data Center Knowledge’s September 3 follow-up

Bentley also explained that EMCOR already handled maintenance of the data centers’ physical plants, including heating, cooling, and backup generators. AOL had previously managed that work in-house and moved it to EMCOR the year before, she said, because using a vendor seemed smarter. The follow-up described that existing maintenance relationship; it did not report an additional outsourcing plan.

Why the facility figures should be read cautiously

The August 15 article included facility sizes and power figures, but those details appeared in the same report that the publisher later said relied on inaccurate reports. The September correction and follow-up do not independently verify the specifications.

  • The original article described the two facilities together as more than 400,000 square feet.
  • It attributed 198,000 square feet and 16 MVA to the Dulles Tech Center.
  • It attributed 236,000 square feet, 25 MVA, and a 4,900-ton cooling plant to the Manassas Tech Center.

These are figures recorded in the corrected 2008 article, not confirmed specifications for a sale. The original article also mentioned a $58 million purchase of a former AOL data center by DuPont Fabros in 2005; that background does not establish that AOL planned to sell the Manassas or Dulles facilities in 2008.
