If you want an upgrade, the most important first check is whether your experience is eligible: Delta says Basic experiences cannot receive paid or complimentary upgrades. Classic and Extra can be eligible, but neither fare nor Medallion status guarantees an upgrade.
Delta’s published rules and available options can vary by route, operating carrier and travel date. Check the fare details shown for your itinerary before buying.
What Delta means by a fare choice
“Fare class” can mean different things. In Delta’s customer-facing fare choices, the product is the cabin or seat experience you purchase; Basic, Classic and Extra are travel experiences that describe fare conditions where offered. Neither term should be confused with the single-letter booking code used for some upgrade rules.
| Layer | Choices | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Product or cabin | Delta Main, Delta Comfort, Delta First, Delta Premium Select, Delta One | The product purchased is one of Delta’s stated upgrade-priority factors, and eligibility depends on the upgrade program, cabin and route. |
| Travel experience | Basic, Classic or Extra, where offered; legacy Refundable may appear in markets where Extra is unavailable | The experience determines important fare conditions. Basic is ineligible for paid and complimentary upgrades; Extra has higher priority than Classic or legacy Refundable when the other listed priority factors are equal. |
| Published fare booking code | A letter code shown for a ticket | Relevant to certain Upgrade Certificate rules. Eligibility varies by certificate type, cabin, route and carrier; there is no universal code list for all upgrades. |
Delta says Extra is not available in every market, and benefits are not identical across all products. Compare the specific terms shown for the trip rather than assuming that an experience name carries the same conditions in every cabin.

Can you upgrade a Delta Basic ticket?
No. Delta says Basic experiences are not eligible for paid or complimentary upgrades. For Delta Main Basic, Delta also lists no Delta Comfort or Preferred Seat upgrades, no SkyMiles earning or Medallion credit, and no same-day confirmed or standby changes.
Delta’s July 8, 2026 announcement says its expanded premium-cabin Basic options also do not qualify for paid or complimentary upgrades. Their mileage treatment is not the same as Main Basic, so it would be inaccurate to say all Basic fares earn no miles.

Basic Business lounge-access transition
Delta’s July 8, 2026 announcement describes lounge and Delta One check-in access for Basic Business through January 18, 2027. Delta’s fare page says complimentary lounge access is not included for Basic Business travel on or after January 19, 2027. This dated change concerns access, not upgrade eligibility.
How Basic, Classic and Extra differ for upgrades
Basic is the clear exclusion. Classic and Extra are the experiences to compare if upgrade eligibility matters. Delta says travelers in Classic or Extra may upgrade their product after purchase, while keeping the original experience classification. Delta does not promise that a post-purchase offer will appear for every itinerary or publish a universal offer price.

Extra can help with upgrade ranking, but only after higher-order factors are considered. Delta lists Medallion tier and product purchased among leading priority factors, followed by Million Miler status, experience type and additional tie-breakers. When those other listed factors are equal, Extra ranks above Classic or legacy Refundable. It does not override higher-priority factors or guarantee clearance.
How complimentary upgrade priority works
Complimentary upgrades are limited to eligible cabins and routes and depend on Delta making upgrade inventory available. Delta says an upgrade may not be available on every flight or market. A higher Medallion tier, Extra experience or eligible card benefit can affect eligibility or priority, but none assures an upgrade. Delta does not publish a verified upgrade-clearance percentage in the cited policy information.

Eligible American Express cardholders
Delta identifies eligible Delta SkyMiles Reserve and Reserve Business American Express cardholders as having access to its complimentary upgrade program. Card-related access or priority is subject to Delta’s listed rules and does not turn an ineligible Basic fare into an upgrade-eligible one or guarantee a seat.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using a Delta Upgrade Certificate
Regional and Global Upgrade Certificates are separate from complimentary upgrades. Delta says certificates have higher priority than Medallion complimentary-upgrade requests, but a certificate works only when the itinerary meets its specific rules and eligible upgrade inventory is available.

- Rules depend on certificate type, cabin, region and operating carrier.
- Some certificate uses require an eligible published fare booking code. The eligible classes differ by certificate and partner, so check the rules for the exact certificate rather than relying on a general list.
- Delta’s Global Upgrade Certificate rules include eligible published fare classes and direct travelers to contact Delta to book; where the requested cabin is unavailable, a waitlist may apply.
- Partner-operated flights have partner-specific booking-class and confirmation or waitlist rules. A Delta certificate is not valid on every partner flight or in every cabin.
A seat map showing an open seat does not establish that upgrade inventory is available. A waitlisted certificate clears only if eligible inventory opens and the applicable conditions are met.
Compare fares before you buy
Evaluate the actual itinerary across the factors that affect cost and flexibility as well as upgrade eligibility:
- Total price: Compare the complete fare for your dates and route, not just the starting price.
- Changes and refunds: Review the exact flexibility terms for the product and experience displayed.
- Seat selection: Check when and how you can choose a seat.
- Miles and Medallion credit: Confirm whether the fare earns either and how much eligible spend counts.
- Upgrade rules: Check whether the experience is eligible, how the product and status affect ranking, and whether the desired route and cabin qualify.
- Operating carrier: For partner itineraries, verify the operating airline and its certificate or upgrade conditions.
- Certificate and inventory: If using a certificate, confirm booking-code requirements and whether upgrade inventory—not merely a seat—is available.
For general SkyMiles members, Delta’s 2026 travel-experience table lists 5 miles per $1 on Classic and 7 miles per $1 on Extra. These rates apply to eligible ticket price, including base fare and carrier-imposed surcharges, and exclude government-imposed taxes and fees. They describe mileage earning, not the likelihood of an upgrade.
A lower-priced Basic fare may suit a traveler who accepts its restrictions and does not need upgrade eligibility. If an upgrade is central to your decision, confirm the displayed fare experience is eligible before purchase; no fare choice establishes that an upgrade is likely.
