Dell’s 2025 Branding Overhaul—and Why XPS Returned in 2026

Dell announced at CES in January 2025 that it would replace familiar PC names including XPS, Inspiron and Latitude with a simpler Dell, Dell Pro and Dell Pro Max portfolio. A year later, Dell reversed part of that plan: it brought XPS back as its premium consumer laptop brand, restored Precision for demanding professional work, and said Dell Premium and Dell Pro Max names would be retired as new products launch.

What Dell announced at CES 2025

Dell’s January 2025 announcement reorganized its PC branding around three main names: Dell for consumer devices, Dell Pro for professional PCs, and Dell Pro Max for high-performance PCs. The plan moved away from established line names including XPS, Inspiron and Latitude.

The new scheme also used tiers such as Plus and Premium. Dell described Premium as the tier that would carry forward the XPS legacy; it did not present Premium as a separate, unrelated replacement for XPS’s high-end positioning. Dell’s announcement was its own explanation of the portfolio and its rationale, not an independent assessment of how customers would respond.

Dell Pro Max High-performance PCs

ServeTheHome’s January 7, 2025 report described the change as a break with long-running XPS, Inspiron and Latitude branding. It also noted Dell’s plans to expand AMD options, especially in commercial systems. Those details reflected the announcement and reporting at the time; they do not establish what Dell’s whole portfolio looks like now.

What changed in January 2026

On January 6, 2026, Dell announced that XPS was returning as its premium consumer laptop brand, replacing the Dell Premium name. Dell also said Precision was returning for demanding professional work and that Dell Pro Max would be retired as new products launch. The company’s post stated, “Dell XPS is back.”

Dell said it had heard both positive feedback and requests for greater clarity about its naming. The 2026 announcement makes the change in direction explicit: the simplified 2025 framework did not remain unchanged. Dell’s statements describe its announced brand organization; they do not mean that every older product listing or name disappeared immediately.

How Dell says its PC brands fit together now

In its January 2026 update, Dell described two broad PC groupings: Dell for personal use and Dell Pro for work. Alienware remains the gaming-focused brand. Within that structure, XPS is back for premium consumer laptops, while Precision is back within Dell Pro for demanding professional workloads.

Dell Pro Work PCs; Precision is for demanding professional workloads

Dell also said it was returning to numbered series—3, 5, 7 and 9—for Dell Pro products. Its post describes Dell Pro series numbers in relation to progressively thinner and lighter devices with longer battery life, and Dell Pro Precision numbers in relation to higher performance. Those are Dell’s descriptions of its own product organization, not independent performance comparisons.

What the naming changes mean when looking at a Dell PC

For someone comparing listings, the practical point is to treat the name as a clue to the product family, not as a complete specification. Dell announced a change of portfolio branding, followed by a partial reversal; neither announcement establishes that a name by itself guarantees a particular configuration, price or performance level.

  • Check the product family and generation. An older listing may use a name from a previous portfolio, while newer products may reflect Dell’s later branding.
  • Use the full model and configuration details. The announcements do not provide a universal mapping from each old name to a particular new model or specification.
  • Read region-specific listings carefully. The January 2026 update is on Dell’s official U.S. blog, and naming or availability may differ by market.

This is a naming and portfolio story, not evidence that the rebrand changed laptop quality, prices or customer demand. Dell’s product-performance figures in its 2025 launch materials describe products and tests; they do not measure the branding change’s business results or how easily buyers recognize the names.
