Daydream’s $50 Million Seed Round: How the AI Fashion-Shopping Startup Evolved

Daydream raised an unusually large $50 million seed round for AI-powered fashion discovery, then launched a conversational shopping agent in 2025. Here is what the company built, who backed it and what remains unknown.

Daydream, founded by e-commerce veterans led by Julie Bornstein, raised a $50 million seed round on June 20, 2024, to build an AI-powered fashion-discovery platform. The company later launched a public beta on June 25, 2025, as a conversational shopping agent that searches across participating fashion brands and retailers. The financing was unusually large for a pre-launch company; it showed investor confidence in the team and thesis, not proof of revenue or product-market fit.

What Daydream is

Daydream is a consumer discovery layer, not primarily a retailer selling its own inventory. It is designed to surface products from participating brands and merchants, then send shoppers to the relevant seller to complete a purchase. Its focus is fashion, including women’s and men’s apparel, rather than general online commerce.

The company combines natural-language search, generative AI, machine learning, computer vision and product-catalog data. Its stated goal is to let shoppers describe an occasion, aesthetic or desired change in ordinary language instead of translating that intent into a retailer’s filters and keywords.

Daydream’s official destination is daydream.ing; merchants can review partnership information at partners.daydream.ing.

The June 2024 financing

Daydream announced the $50 million seed round on June 20, 2024. Forerunner Ventures and Index Ventures co-led the round, with GV and True Ventures participating, according to the funding announcement and GeekWire.

A $50 million seed round is notable because Daydream had not yet publicly launched. The capital would have to support expensive, data-heavy work: catalog ingestion and normalization, inventory connections, AI and search engineering, image understanding, merchant partnerships and consumer-product development. The company did not disclose a valuation in the available coverage.

That financing demonstrates investor conviction in Daydream’s founders and market thesis. It does not establish conversion, retention, gross merchandise volume, profitability or any other operating metric.

Who founded Daydream

Julie Bornstein is co-founder and CEO. She previously held senior roles at Stitch Fix, Sephora, Nordstrom and Urban Outfitters, and founded THE YES, which Pinterest acquired in 2022. Her background combines retail operations, merchandising and consumer technology.

The 2024 launch coverage identified Matt Fisher as CTO and co-founder, Dan Cary as co-founder and chief product officer, and Lisa Green and Richard Kim as co-founders. Cary spent 12 years at Google and worked on generative-AI products for YouTube; the team overall brought experience from Stitch Fix, Nordstrom, Sephora, Urban Outfitters, Google, Pinterest and other technology companies. The founding roster is reported by GeekWire.

Later Index Ventures material refers to Lisa Yamner rather than Lisa Green and describes Maria Belousova as CTO. The available sources do not establish when or why those names and roles changed, so the early founding roster and later operating team should not be treated as identical.

Why Daydream thinks shopping search is broken

Traditional e-commerce search assumes shoppers know the retailer’s taxonomy and the exact words used in a product listing. That works for a precise query such as a brand and model number, but fashion shopping often begins with a less structured objective:

  • “Find something for a beach wedding.”
  • “Show me a polished but casual outfit.”
  • “Find bright classic sneakers.”
  • “Locate a tote like this one, but without stripes.”

Filters can narrow an existing catalog, but they are less effective at interpreting occasion, mood, proportion, inspiration or an image. Fashion discovery is also fragmented across brand websites, marketplaces, social platforms and retailer apps. Index Ventures describes Daydream’s thesis as replacing rigid search-and-filter behavior with a more personalized, sales-associate-like experience; its investment perspective is available at Index Ventures.

What Daydream originally promised

The 2024 announcement described a beta planned for later that year, a fashion-first catalog and what the company called a “superhuman” search engine. Daydream said nearly 2,000 brands were signed up at the time, according to GeekWire and the company announcement.

Those statements were plans, not evidence that the public product already existed. The subsequent launch provides the important update.

What actually launched

Daydream’s public beta launched on June 25, 2025. The company positioned it as a chat-based AI shopping agent built exclusively for fashion. Reported capabilities included:

  • Text prompts describing garments, occasions, styles and constraints.
  • Image inputs, including visual starting points and, later, screenshot-based search.
  • Conversational refinement rather than restarting a keyword search.
  • Onboarding that asks for information such as name, birthdate, price range and brand preferences.
  • Saved collections for products a shopper wants to revisit.
  • A “Say More” control for modifying an item or search.

TechCrunch and Daydream’s launch announcement reported more than 8,000 brands at public beta. Later, Index Ventures described more than 10,000 partner brands. These are company or investor-reported, date-specific catalog figures—not independently audited measures of sales or availability.

  3. Review products from multiple brands and refine the request conversationally.
  4. Save or compare products, then follow the relevant merchant link to buy.

The available sources do not fully document checkout ownership, commissions, returns handling or whether every displayed product has live inventory at the instant a shopper clicks.

Why the cross-brand model is difficult

Catalog quality

AI recommendations are constrained by the underlying feed. Missing sizes, inconsistent color names, poor photography, incomplete descriptions and stale prices can turn a plausible answer into an unusable one.

Inventory and fit

Index Ventures describes Daydream as using real-time inventory. That claim is not accompanied by independent accuracy data. A recommendation fails if the item is sold out, unavailable in the shopper’s size or unsuitable for the shopper’s delivery location.

AI interpretation

A conversational system can infer the wrong garment in a multi-item image, silently drop a budget or occasion constraint, or overstate fabric, sustainability, fit or ethical claims. Shoppers should verify product-page details before paying.

Trust and incentives

Daydream must make clear what is an organic relevance judgment, what may be paid placement and what is an AI-generated interpretation. It also must explain whether product rankings favor merchants with better data feeds rather than better products.

Merchant economics

Brands may gain qualified discovery traffic, but they also risk losing direct customer relationships and being compared side by side with competitors. The sources do not disclose Daydream’s current merchant fees, affiliate rates, conversion, repeat usage, average order value or take rate. TechCrunch reported that new merchants were being onboarded free at the June 2025 beta launch; that was a launch-period detail, not a confirmed current policy.

How Daydream compares with other shopping tools

Approach Strength Limitation relative to Daydream
Daydream Fashion-specific, conversational, cross-brand discovery with text and image inputs Depends on merchant data, inventory connections and a reliable path to third-party checkout
Retailer-native assistants, such as Amazon Rufus Deep integration with one marketplace’s inventory, account and checkout Assortment and customer relationship remain inside that retailer’s ecosystem; Amazon describes Rufus at its official page
General search engines and chatbots Broad coverage and useful shopping answers May lack a consistent fashion catalog, structured refinement and purchase journey
Pinterest and social discovery Strong visual inspiration Not necessarily a dedicated conversational personal-shopping agent; Pinterest’s business information is at Pinterest for Business
Retailer and marketplace search Usually stronger fulfillment, returns and live-inventory integration Limited to one retailer or commercial ecosystem

Later product development

Index Ventures reported that Daydream released an iPhone app in November 2025. The app reportedly connected to the Daydream agent and used Apple’s visual-intelligence framework to search from a screenshot. A separate Daydream announcement describes the app as an extension of its AI fashion-discovery platform.

App availability, supported iOS versions, geography and any pricing can change. The cited materials do not establish current subscription terms or universal access.

What remains unknown

  • Valuation for the $50 million seed round.
  • Revenue model, merchant fees and referral economics.
  • Conversion rate, retention, gross merchandise volume, customer-acquisition cost and profitability.
  • Independent testing of recommendation quality, inventory accuracy or visual matching.
  • How returns, shipping, taxes, cross-border orders and conflicting merchant policies are handled.
  • Whether recommendations favor merchants with superior data integration.

Bottom line

Daydream paired a highly experienced retail-and-technology team with an unusually large pre-launch seed round and a clear thesis: fashion shopping should begin with human intent, images and conversation rather than rigid retailer keywords. The thesis became a public fashion-shopping agent in June 2025 and later extended to an iPhone app. Its business remains unproven on the metrics that matter most to shoppers, merchants and investors—accuracy, availability, conversion, repeat use and sustainable economics.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
