Digital Realty Trust announced David Schirmacher’s appointment as senior vice president of technical operations on January 3, 2012. He was responsible for technical operations, uptime and reliability across the company’s global data center portfolio. The appointment is historical; the available announcements do not establish whether Schirmacher works at Digital Realty today.
When did David Schirmacher join Digital Realty?
Digital Realty announced the appointment on January 3, 2012. The company said Schirmacher would lead technical operations for its data centers in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific, and would be based in the Metro New York region. He reported to Dave Caron, then senior vice president of portfolio management. Digital Realty’s announcement described the role as covering uptime and reliability as well as technical operations.
What experience did Schirmacher bring?
Immediately before joining Digital Realty, Schirmacher was a principal and chief strategy officer at FieldView Solutions. Earlier, he served as vice president and global head of engineering and critical systems at Goldman Sachs. Digital Realty said he had spent more than 12 years at Goldman Sachs focused on data center strategy and IT infrastructure. The company also cited senior positions at Compass Management and Leasing and Jones Lang LaSalle. The 2012 release is the source for this career history and tenure figure.
How did his responsibilities change?
Digital Realty’s later announcements show a shift from operating existing facilities toward developing them. The titles and responsibilities below refer to distinct points in the company’s announcements, not to Schirmacher’s present-day employment.

In its January 29, 2015 announcement, Digital Realty said Schirmacher and chief technology officer Jim Smith would switch roles effective March 1. Schirmacher was moving from Portfolio Operations to Design & Construction. The company’s release describes the planned transition.
What did he say about Digital Realty’s EnVision system?
In a May 13, 2013 release about EnVision, Digital Realty identified Schirmacher as senior vice president of portfolio operations. He described a practical challenge for data center operators: “Up until now, data has been collected, but it has not necessarily been easily accessed or arranged in an intuitive manner that is helpful to a data center operator,” he said. What is known—and not known—about his current status?
The cited company announcements document the 2012 appointment, his portfolio-operations role in 2013 and the planned 2015 move to design and construction. They do not establish Schirmacher’s employment status in 2026, so those historical titles should not be read as confirmation that he still holds a role at Digital Realty.
