The startup behind the promise of spotting companies trying a competitor’s software was Datanyze, a San Mateo technology-intelligence company founded in 2012. Its system looked for public signals of software on company websites and turned apparent technology changes into sales leads. The “25% a month” growth figure was a historical claim reported in 2014—not a current rate or an independently audited result.
What Datanyze did
Datanyze was founded by Ilya Semin and built a product for software sales and marketing teams. The idea was to make a company’s technology stack useful for prospecting: if a vendor could find businesses using a rival product, its sales team could prioritize those accounts for a possible replacement pitch.
That made Datanyze more than a directory of companies. Its sales-intelligence proposition was to connect technology observations with timing: a tool appearing or disappearing could be a reason to investigate an account. Contemporary coverage described the company as bootstrapped before raising outside funding. VentureBeat’s 2014 coverage is the source for the early product and business claims.
How the technology signals worked
Datanyze crawled websites and looked for code and other publicly observable indicators associated with software products. The 2014 account described daily crawls and a database of thousands of technologies; those are historical descriptions, not a statement about the current product’s crawl schedule or coverage.

- A website exposed a detectable signal, such as a script or tag associated with a technology.
- Datanyze matched that signal to a company and a technology category.
- A sales user could search for companies associated with a competitor’s product or receive an alert when a technology appeared to have been added or removed.
- The sales team could then investigate whether the account was a plausible prospect and decide whether outreach made sense.
For example, if a prospect’s public site began loading a rival analytics script, a vendor might treat the change as a lead to qualify. That example illustrates the logic; it does not mean the signal proves the company is evaluating a purchase.
What a detected change can—and cannot—show
A detector may establish that code was observed on a particular web property. It does not, by itself, prove that the whole company uses the product, that it is paying for it, that it is in a private trial, or that a contract renewal is approaching. “Trying a competitor’s software” was a compelling sales framing, but the reported mechanism supports an inference from visible technology evidence, not privileged access to trial registrations.

Signals can also be incomplete or misleading: a script may be unused or stale, deployed only on a test page, managed by an agency, or present on one domain but not another. A technology may be invisible if it operates internally or leaves no public website footprint. An apparent addition or removal is therefore a prompt to qualify an account, not confirmation of buying intent.
Why sales teams wanted the signal
Traditional prospect lists help answer which companies might fit a market. Technographics try to add context about the tools those companies appear to use. A change signal adds a possible timing clue: a new deployment could indicate implementation or evaluation, while a removed product could suggest a replacement or redesign. Either might be worth checking in the context of the account’s needs.

Potential uses included competitive displacement, account prioritization, market-share research, territory planning, and finding businesses with particular marketing, analytics, hosting, CRM, or infrastructure products. But a technology change is not equivalent to a qualified opportunity. Stronger prioritization combines the signal with company fit, relevant buyer roles, CRM history, first-party engagement, and human verification.
Datanyze and the 25%-a-month claim
The growth claim belongs to 2014. VentureBeat’s January 20, 2014 story used the 25%-per-month figure in its headline; its August 26, 2014 funding coverage said Datanyze had been growing at about that pace “all this year.” The later report also said the company was approaching $1 million in annual revenue by January 2014 without outside investment.

These were company-reported or contemporaneously reported figures, not audited financial statements. The available coverage does not establish the exact metric behind the 25%—for example, whether it meant revenue, recurring revenue, customers, or another measure—or show that the pace continued beyond the period described. The reported revenue figure should likewise be treated as a run-rate-style claim, not assumed to be recognized revenue for a completed year.
Compounding explains why the number attracted attention: a steady 25% monthly increase would multiply a starting value by about 3.8 over six months and 14.6 over twelve. That arithmetic is not evidence that Datanyze sustained the rate; it shows why the definition and duration of the underlying metric matter.

Web technographics versus broader technology intelligence
The 2014 VentureBeat account contrasted Datanyze’s emphasis on public website signals with HG Data’s use of documents and other less-visible sources, including PDFs, Word files, and spreadsheets. It described the companies as complementary and reported data-sharing or resale arrangements. Those details describe the historical landscape, not necessarily either company’s present capabilities.
The distinction is useful: website technographics can be effective for visible web services, but internal systems and purchases that leave no public web trace require other evidence. A contact database answers who works at an account; a technographic signal suggests what technology may be present; first-party product analytics show activity within a vendor’s own product. These sources answer different questions and should not be treated as interchangeable proof of intent.
What happened to Datanyze
- 2012: Datanyze was founded, according to company-profile listings.
- January 2014: VentureBeat published its profile associated with the 25%-monthly-growth headline.
- August 2014: Datanyze announced a $2 million seed round, with investors including IDG Ventures, Google Ventures, and Mark Cuban, according to VentureBeat.
- December 2014: Datanyze acquired LeadLedger, a company in the technology-market-share and technographics space, as reported by TechCrunch.
- September 2018: ZoomInfo acquired Datanyze, according to the acquisition history in ZoomInfo’s 2020 annual report.
Datanyze’s public website now presents a broader mix of contact data, prospecting, technographics, and market-share research than the original competitor-change story. Its current positioning is visible at Datanyze.com; it should not be assumed that today’s product works exactly like the 2014 system.
How to evaluate a technographic sales signal
For a sales team considering this type of data, the practical question is not whether a vendor can surface technology information, but whether its evidence is accurate and actionable for the team’s market.
- Ask what qualifies as a detection and whether the signal is observed directly, inferred, licensed, or partner-supplied.
- Check how often accounts are revisited, how additions and removals are timestamped, and how stale installations or false matches are handled.
- Determine whether the system can separate production sites from staging environments and map domains, subsidiaries, and parent companies appropriately.
- Ask what share of your target accounts has useful coverage, especially if your market relies on internal or non-web software.
- Confirm that alerts can reach the CRM or workflow your sales team actually uses, and that there is capacity and a defined process to follow up.
- Review data provenance, privacy, deletion procedures, and outreach obligations for the jurisdictions and data types involved.
- Clarify how pricing is calculated—such as by seats, records, credits, reveals, exports, or usage—before comparing products.
Common failure modes include treating a script change as proof of urgency, attributing an agency’s technology to the wrong buyer, acting on a stale observation, and sending outreach without identifying a relevant decision-maker. A useful technographic alert narrows the research a seller must do; it does not replace qualification.
