What the major carrier promotions required
Verizon
Verizon was reported to offer a free iPhone 17 Pro with an eligible trade-in and qualifying unlimited plan. The headline price represented monthly promotional credits, not an instant gift. The value depended on account eligibility, trade-in condition and remaining on the required plan for the credit term.
AT&T
AT&T was reported to advertise up to $1,100 off iPhone 17 models, with trade-in and plan requirements. New lines, upgrades and switchers could receive different terms, so the maximum advertised credit was not universal.

T-Mobile coverage reported up to $1,100 off iPhone 17-series phones with an eligible trade-in and unlimited plan. It also reported a free iPhone 16e under a qualifying promotion. Model eligibility, plan tier and customer status determined the actual credit.
Carrier policies, plan names, credit amounts and unlock rules can change. Check the carrier’s current terms before treating any similar promotion as comparable.

What “free iPhone” meant
A carrier’s “free” iPhone usually followed this structure:
- You financed the device over a specified term, commonly 24 to 36 months.
- The carrier applied promotional credits to future monthly bills.
- You maintained an eligible plan and line for the required period.
- You met trade-in, activation and account requirements.
- You could still owe taxes, fees, an activation charge or a down payment.
- Cancelling service, changing to an ineligible plan, paying off early or upgrading could forfeit remaining credits and leave a device balance.
Apple’s launch information said qualifying carrier offers could provide up to $1,100 in credits toward an iPhone 17 Pro with an eligible iPhone 13-or-newer trade-in. Was Cyber Monday better than Black Friday?
Usually, no. Cyber Monday 2025 largely extended Black Friday and Cyber Week. Major carrier promotions were already live by the holiday weekend, while retailer prices and inventory changed during the period. Waiting until Monday did not guarantee a better iPhone deal.
- Carrier offers: The headline credit often remained the same; eligibility and credit availability mattered more than the date.

Apple’s own offer versus carrier deals
Apple did not generally match carrier bill credits. Its direct options were Apple Trade In, carrier financing and limited shopping-event gift-card incentives where offered. Apple launched the iPhone 17 at $799 for 256GB in the United States, with availability beginning September 19, 2025. Direct trade-in values depended on model, configuration and condition; Apple said an iPhone 13 or newer could receive $200–$700 toward an iPhone 17 at launch.

Carrier promotion:
Required plan cost during the credit period + taxes and fees + activation or upgrade fees + any amount paid before credits + value of the trade-in − promotional bill credits.
Unlocked alternative:
Unlocked phone price + chosen low-cost wireless plan − proceeds from selling the old phone independently.
A $0 device payment can still require a costly unlimited plan. A trade-in is also part of the economics: surrendering a phone worth $500 privately is not free simply because the carrier labels the replacement free.
Fine-print checklist
- Confirm the exact plan tier and its monthly price.
- Ask whether the offer is for an existing line, a new line, an upgrade or a port-in.
- Check the credit duration and what happens if you leave early.
- Verify the required trade-in model, condition, payoff status and shipment deadline.
- Price taxes, activation, upgrade and financing charges.
- Confirm whether the phone is locked and when it becomes eligible for unlocking.
- Check the return period before sending in the old phone.
- Verify storage capacity: an advertised price may apply only to one configuration.
- Do not assume a retailer’s carrier-specific listing is unlocked.
