Whether it was the right purchase depended on your license needs. A household sharing across devices might have saved more with Microsoft 365 Family, while a freelancer needed commercial-use rights and possibly Outlook.

The $99.99 Best Buy price and $50 reduction were reported by Laptoping. Microsoft released Office 2024 for consumers on October 1, 2024, making this one of the first major holiday-sale opportunities for the new edition.
What Office Home 2024 includes
Office Home 2024 is a perpetual, one-time purchase rather than a subscription. It includes Word 2024, Excel 2024, PowerPoint 2024 and OneNote 2024. Microsoft lists it for one PC or Mac, with compatibility requirements for supported Windows 10, Windows 11 and macOS versions. The product is licensed for noncommercial home or school use.

It does not include Outlook, a 1 TB OneDrive subscription, multi-device rights or automatic entitlement to the next major Office release. It receives security and support updates under Microsoft’s applicable lifecycle policies, but “lifetime” is an imprecise marketing label: the purchase does not promise indefinite feature upgrades or unlimited installations. How Microsoft 365 differs
Microsoft 365 Personal
Personal is an annual or monthly subscription for one person. It provides the latest desktop applications on multiple devices and platforms, 1 TB of OneDrive storage, Outlook and continuing feature and security updates. It is generally the better fit for someone moving among a desktop, laptop, tablet and phone.
Microsoft 365 Family
Family can be shared with up to six people. Each person normally receives 1 TB of OneDrive storage, for up to 6 TB in total, and their own account and applications. At the late-2024 price signal of $129.99 per year, six users would represent about $21.67 per person per year before considering storage or other benefits. If only one person uses it, the extra capacity may not justify the higher price.

No comparably documented official Microsoft 365 Cyber Monday 2024 promotion was published, so treat those subscription figures as period price signals, not confirmed event discounts.

At the observed U.S. price signals, $149.99 for Office Home 2024 equals roughly 18 months of Microsoft 365 Personal at $99.99 per year. The $99.99 Cyber Monday price equals about one year of Personal. Over three years, Personal would total approximately $299.97 before taxes, renewals or later price changes; Office Home 2024 would remain a one-time $99.99 purchase, but without subscription storage and continuing feature upgrades. These are comparisons of observed prices, not guarantees of future checkout or renewal costs.
Choose by your situation
One home computer or a student
Choose Office Home 2024 if you need Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote on one computer, do not need Outlook or commercial rights, and prefer paying once.

One person with several devices
Choose Microsoft 365 Personal when current features, OneDrive, Outlook and device continuity matter more than owning a fixed version.
A family or shared household
Choose Microsoft 365 Family when at least two people will use separate Microsoft accounts. Its economics improve as more of the six available places are actually used.

Do not use Office Home 2024 for client or business work merely because it is cheaper. Office Home & Business 2024 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook with commercial-use rights for one PC or Mac; Microsoft lists it at $249.99. Someone who needs only one application
Microsoft sells standalone Word, Excel and PowerPoint licenses for PC or Mac. Compare the individual-app price with Office Home 2024 before buying: if you need two or more applications, the bundle may be better value. Light users should also consider free web-based Office tools or LibreOffice, although they may not match Microsoft-specific formatting, macros, advanced Excel features or desktop compatibility.

A very low price is not proof of fraud, but it warrants verification. Microsoft 365 is a subscription service, so “lifetime Microsoft 365” is contradictory. Be cautious with Office Professional Plus keys aimed at consumers without a clear volume-license explanation, keys not tied to your Microsoft account, phone or remote-access activation, third-party scripts, missing region or edition information, and sellers without a clear refund policy.
- Buy from Microsoft or a major retailer and confirm whether the seller is the retailer itself or a marketplace merchant.
- Redeem through the Microsoft account that will own the license. Microsoft’s redemption guidance is at Microsoft Support.
- Check the exact edition, device count, region, activation method, commercial-use terms and renewal conditions.
- Keep the receipt, order confirmation, product-key email or card and the account used for redemption.
Unusually cheap keys can involve misused volume licenses, region restrictions, transferred accounts or activations that are later blocked. That possibility is why an inexpensive listing should not be treated as equivalent to a documented retail license.

Checks before you redeem or install
- Review your current entitlement. Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns an existing Microsoft 365 subscription before redeeming a retail code; verify whether it extends that subscription or creates a separate entitlement.
- Identify installed Office editions. Older installations can conflict with Office 2024, particularly when installers or licensing models differ. Record the edition and account association before uninstalling anything.
- Confirm the platform. “One PC or Mac” means one permitted device, not simultaneous installation on both platforms. Check current system requirements at Microsoft’s requirements page before checkout.
- Check renewal terms for subscriptions. Note the first-year price, renewal price, renewal date, automatic-renewal setting and whether an offer is limited to new subscribers.
Other legitimate ways to reduce the cost
Workplace Discount Program
Employees of participating organizations may qualify for Microsoft’s Workplace Discount Program, formerly the Home Use Program. Microsoft’s employee guide describes a 30% discount on Microsoft 365 Personal or Family annual subscriptions, subject to employer and work-account eligibility. Before buying, check whether your university, school or employer already provides Microsoft 365. An existing entitlement can make a retail purchase unnecessary.
Later retailer promotions
If you missed Cyber Monday, compare current Microsoft, Best Buy and Costco listings, but treat live prices and incentives as changeable. For example, retailer pages may show digital delivery, membership incentives or marketplace sellers with different redemption terms.
