Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA late-May 2024 crypto news cycle covered three different infrastructure problems: Ledger began fulfilling long-delayed Stax hardware-wallet preorders, Mastercard put an alias-based transfer pilot into production, and Gemini started returning assets owed to Earn customers after Genesis halted withdrawals. These were not one integrated product launch: Ledger addressed self-custody, Mastercard addressed transfer identification and compatibility, and Gemini addressed creditor recovery.
Ledger Stax finally entered fulfillment
Ledger announced that first customer shipments of Stax began on May 27, 2024. The shipment was the fulfillment of earlier preorders for a product announced in 2022, not the debut of an entirely new Ledger product family. Ledger said new orders would become globally available in summer 2024, while the first units went to preorder customers. Current availability should be checked on the official product page, because a 2024 shipping announcement does not establish stock or delivery dates today.
What Stax is—and is not
Stax is a self-custody hardware wallet, more precisely a hardware device that protects private keys and signs transactions. It does not hold coins on an exchange, and the coins do not physically reside inside the device. Blockchain balances remain on their networks; Stax keeps the signing secrets isolated and lets you approve transactions on the device.
Ledger promoted a curved E Ink touchscreen, designed with Tony Fadell, who is associated with the iPod’s design history. The company described the display as the first curved E Ink secure touchscreen. That is a Ledger claim, not an independent industry certification.

Who benefits from Stax?
- People who want a larger, more readable transaction screen than typical Nano devices.
- Users who regularly sign transactions and value on-device review, Bluetooth and USB-C.
- Holders who want keys kept apart from an exchange account.
It is a poor fit if you only hold a small amount, require Chromebook support, want completely open-source hardware, or are unwilling to secure a recovery phrase. A large screen does not make a transaction safe by itself: a user can still approve a malicious smart-contract call or send on the wrong network.

Self-custody responsibilities
- Buy through Ledger or an authorized channel and inspect the device. A tampered or counterfeit device can compromise the setup.
- Write the recovery phrase down offline. Never enter it into a website, app, support chat or “verification” form.
- Read the destination, network, amount and contract details on the device before signing.
- If the device is lost, damaged or reset, a genuine backup device can restore access with the recovery phrase. Losing both the device and phrase can permanently remove access.
- Optional recovery or other ecosystem services are separate from the core hardware wallet and may involve identity checks, fees or regional limits.
Mastercard Crypto Credential made aliases usable in a limited pilot
On May 29, 2024, Mastercard announced the first live peer-to-peer transactions using Crypto Credential. This was not a new blockchain, a replacement for the Mastercard card network, or a universal permissionless crypto rail. It was a verification and metadata layer operated through participating exchanges and wallets.
How an alias transfer works
- A participating exchange verifies the customer and issues a human-readable Mastercard Crypto Credential alias.
- The sender enters or selects that alias instead of copying a long blockchain address.
- Mastercard’s system checks that the alias is valid and exchanges the required transaction metadata.
- It checks whether the recipient wallet supports the selected asset and blockchain.
- If the receiving wallet cannot accept that asset or network, the transfer is stopped rather than submitted to an incompatible destination.
The check reduces address-copying and wrong-network errors, but it does not make a transfer reversible. A valid alias can still belong to the wrong person, and fees, spreads, limits, settlement times and volatility remain matters for the participating provider. Mastercard’s announcement describes verification and metadata exchange; it does not establish Mastercard as custodian of users’ crypto.

Initial countries and providers
| Initial countries | Argentina, Brazil, Chile, France, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and Uruguay |
|---|---|
| Providers named in the announcement | Bit2Me, Lirium and Mercado Bitcoin; Foxbit joined the pilot ecosystem |
| Availability | Limited by country, provider, asset and blockchain; Mastercard projected rollout to more than 7 million users across participating exchanges, a projection rather than a confirmed active-user count |
Mastercard said the system could carry information required by the Travel Rule for cross-border transfers. That can help regulated providers meet compliance obligations, but it also means identity verification and reduced anonymity compared with an unhosted, direct wallet transfer. Users should confirm availability inside their provider account rather than assume that a listed country or exchange supports every token or chain.

Gemini Earn was a lending program, not a bank savings account. Genesis, the lending counterparty, halted withdrawals on November 16, 2022. Gemini announced on May 29, 2024 that approximately 97% of the digital assets owed to Earn customers would be distributed. The remaining approximately 3% was announced for distribution in June; Gemini later said on June 20 that all assets owed in kind had been distributed, after notifying customers on June 14.

What “in kind” means
An in-kind distribution aims to return the same quantity of each asset owed as of the withdrawal suspension. One BTC owed was intended to produce one BTC; one ETH owed was intended to produce one ETH. Customers therefore received subsequent price appreciation or depreciation of those coins rather than a fixed cash amount based on a later dollar price.
The contemporary roundup described roughly $2.18 billion and 97%. The percentage refers to the portion of digital-asset quantities owed, not necessarily 97% of a dollar balance on the repayment date. Crypto prices move, so the dollar value of the returned coins changes. Gemini’s later description of a 237% recovery compares the value at distribution with the value when Genesis halted withdrawals; it is not a 237% investment gain for every customer, a cash refund, or proof that every dispute disappeared.

Timeline and practical withdrawal steps
- November 16, 2022: Genesis suspended withdrawals, starting the recovery and bankruptcy process.
- May 29, 2024: Gemini announced the initial approximately 97% in-kind distribution.
- June 2024: Gemini announced and delivered the final approximately 3%, completing its stated 100% in-kind distribution.
- Sign in through the Gemini website or app directly, not an email link, and compare the asset quantity credited with your records.
- Before sending assets to an external wallet, check whether an Approved Address is required for the Earn account. Confirm the address and network; an in-kind credit does not protect against a mistaken withdrawal.
- Save statements, distribution notices and transaction histories for tax and legal records.
A recovery of the same number of coins does not automatically restore lost liquidity, opportunity cost or tax simplicity. Tax treatment depends on jurisdiction and personal facts; a distribution is not automatically tax-free. Bankruptcy claims, settlements and ordinary exchange withdrawals are separate legal and operational matters.
Scam warnings for creditors
- No legitimate recovery process needs your seed phrase or private key.
- Do not connect a wallet or pay an “unlock,” “release” or “recovery” fee because of an unsolicited message.
- Verify balances and withdrawal controls inside the Gemini account and use independently typed official addresses.
What connects these three stories?
They addressed different forms of friction in crypto. Ledger Stax sought to make self-custody and transaction signing easier to inspect. Mastercard Crypto Credential sought to make transfers easier to address and validate within a regulated partner network. Gemini’s distribution dealt with the consequences of counterparty failure after assets had been lent through Genesis.
The common lesson is not that crypto became risk-free. Users still have to authenticate devices and accounts, verify recipients and networks, understand who controls the assets, and preserve records. Convenience can reduce mistakes, but it cannot reverse a signed transaction, eliminate provider risk or replace a recovery phrase.
