Before sending money to a crypto presale, verify who is behind it, get the sale terms in writing, check its claims independently, and understand what you could lose and whether you could recover it. Use the checklist below to find unanswered questions and warning signs—not to certify that a sale is safe or predict a token’s value.
What a presale checklist can—and cannot—tell you
A checklist makes it easier to compare a project’s claims with evidence you can verify. It cannot guarantee that a presale is legitimate, that a token will gain value, or that you will be able to recover funds if something goes wrong. A polished website, celebrity endorsement, or security audit is not proof of safety.
The Financial Conduct Authority’s 2025 cryptoasset consumer research found that, among 318 cryptoasset users who had encountered or personally been victims of suspected fraudulent crypto activity, 22% selected “Fraudulent initial coin offerings (ICOs) or token sales.” That is a response from this subgroup—not the percentage of presales that are fraudulent or of all crypto users who have been scammed. Work through these checks before paying
-
Identify the issuer and the people accountable
Write down the legal entity behind the sale, the people responsible, the project’s official channels, the token name, and the sale website. Then search the project or company name and the cryptocurrency name alongside terms such as “review,” “scam,” and “complaint.” Look for information beyond the issuer’s own site, social posts, influencer endorsements, and testimonials; verify material claims independently. The FTC advises consumers to research crypto investment offers rather than relying on promotional claims. FTC, Spotting cryptocurrency investment scams

Warning sign: You cannot establish who is responsible for the offer, or key claims appear only in promotional material.
-
Get the complete sale terms in writing
Look for documentation that explains:
- What the token is intended to do and what rights, if any, it gives its holder.
- Total supply, circulating supply, allocations, and vesting schedules.
- Presale price, purchase limits, lockups, and the conditions or events for token delivery.
- Whether refunds or cancellations are possible, and the terms that apply.
- How the issuer plans to use the proceeds.
Missing or unclear investment details are a warning sign in FTC guidance on investment scams. Treat unanswered material questions as unresolved risk—not as proof that a particular project is fraudulent. FTC, Investment Scams

Separate what the product does from what the token might be worth
Ask what the project can do now, what the token is needed for, and which statements can be checked without relying on the issuer’s marketing. A demo may show that some functionality exists; a technical paper may describe a design. Neither establishes commercial success or investment value. Be especially cautious when a sale’s case depends on future adoption, demand, or price increases that cannot be independently verified.
-
Treat guarantees and pressure as reasons to stop
Pause if you see guaranteed returns, “risk-free” claims, promises of fast profits, artificial deadlines, or pressure to skip research. The FTC says, “Only scammers will guarantee that you’ll make over-the-top-profits, earn enough income to quit your job, or beat the stock market.” This is consumer guidance about a warning sign; it is not, by itself, a finding about a specific sale. Verify the payment route, contract, and wallet interaction
Independently confirm the token contract address and network using project information you locate separately from the payment prompt. Check that the website and wallet connection are the ones you intended to use. Do not share a seed phrase, and do not sign a transaction if you cannot understand what it authorizes.

Check the legal and consumer-protection position where you live
Calling an offer a “utility token” or “presale” does not determine its legal status. In US federal guidance dated April 22, 2026, the SEC explains that a crypto asset may be offered subject to an investment contract; securities-law treatment depends on the transaction and applicable law, not just the label used in marketing. Protections vary by jurisdiction. For example, the UK FCA says most crypto-related activities are not regulated and generally do not come with Financial Ombudsman Service or Financial Services Compensation Scheme protection. Those statements are UK-specific; check the rules and available remedies in your own jurisdiction. FCA, Crypto investment scams

Decide your maximum loss—or walk away
Set a limit you could afford to lose before making any decision. The FCA tells consumers, “You should be prepared to lose all the money you invest in crypto.” If you cannot independently check the issuer, contract, sale terms, or downside, pausing or declining is more defensible than letting a deadline decide for you.
