Crypto Exchange Fees Explained: Trading, Withdrawal, and Network Costs

Trading fees are only one part of crypto exchange costs. Compare execution prices, fiat rails, withdrawal charges, and network compatibility for your transaction.

Crypto exchange costs are more than the fee shown beside a trade. You may also pay for fiat deposits or withdrawals, receive a less favorable execution price because of spread or slippage, and face a separate charge when you move crypto off the exchange. The total depends on the exchange, product, order, account tier, payment method, and withdrawal network.

What fees can you pay on a crypto exchange?

Separate the costs into four buckets before comparing venues. A low trading-fee headline does not establish that a particular purchase and withdrawal will be inexpensive.

  • Trading fee: A charge when an order executes, commonly set as a percentage of the trade value.
  • Spread and slippage: The difference between the price you expect and the price at which your order actually fills. These affect your effective cost even if they are not itemized as a fee.
  • Fiat funding fee: A charge for depositing or withdrawing dollars, euros, or another government-issued currency through a payment method.
  • Crypto withdrawal charge: The amount the exchange quotes when you send crypto to an external wallet or another platform. It is distinct from the trading fee and may not equal the blockchain’s underlying transaction cost.

What are maker and taker fees?

Maker and taker describe how an order interacts with the exchange’s order book. A taker order immediately matches available orders; a maker order rests on the book and supplies liquidity. The fee schedule may charge different rates for the two roles.

Taker orders

An order that fills immediately against existing orders is taker execution. Coinbase Exchange says a market-price order that fills immediately is a taker order. Its trading rules also say market orders are always taker orders. A market order can fill at several prices, so the final execution may be less favorable than the latest trade price.

Maker orders

A limit order that remains on the order book can be maker execution. But a limit order that immediately matches existing orders may be taker execution instead; the order label alone does not guarantee a maker fee.

Orders that have both roles

An order can be partly matched immediately and partly left resting on the book. Coinbase says the immediately filled portion can incur the taker fee and the remainder the maker fee. Check the exchange’s trade details if the order fills in more than one part.

Why do exchange fee schedules differ?

There is no single market-wide crypto exchange fee. Rates depend on the venue and product, trading pair, order role, and fee tier. Some exchanges determine tiers using recent trading volume; other schedules may also consider assets held on the platform. An instant-buy feature and an order-book product can use different pricing logic, even when offered by the same company.

As provider-published examples, Coinbase Exchange’s visible spot schedule for clients outside its Liquidity Program lists 60 basis points (0.60%) taker and 40 basis points (0.40%) maker at the $0K–$10K trailing-volume tier; at $400M+ it lists 4 basis points (0.04%) taker and 0 basis points maker. Coinbase says tiers are based on trailing 30-day volume and can take time to update. Its Exchange Fees page describes an applicable taker range of 0.04% to 0.60%; these are Coinbase Exchange figures, not a market average or a price promise for other Coinbase products.

Kraken’s standard spot crypto schedule lists 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker at its $0+ tier, with higher-volume tiers and separate schedules for stablecoin, pegged-token, foreign-exchange, and other products. The applicable rate depends on the product and the account’s qualifying activity. These Coinbase and Kraken figures are examples from provider schedules accessed in 2026, not a like-for-like ranking: the schedules use different tier structures and may apply to different pairs and products.

For a current decision, check the official schedule for your country, account, product, pair, and tier rather than relying on a rate quoted for another user or product. Coinbase Exchange Fees and Kraken’s fee schedule publish venue-specific details.

How spreads and slippage change the effective price

The execution fee is not the same as the cost of the price you receive. The spread is the gap between buy and sell quotes; slippage is the difference between an expected price and the eventual fill. A market order may fill across multiple price levels, especially when available liquidity at the best quote is limited. Coinbase’s trading rules warn that market orders can execute less favorably than the latest trade price.

To compare what a trade costs, consider both the stated fee and the quoted price or spread, and account for the possibility of slippage. There is no universal spread figure that can be applied to every exchange, asset, or moment.

Fiat deposit and withdrawal fees are separate

Moving dollars or euros through a bank or payment rail is not the same as withdrawing crypto to a blockchain address. Coinbase Exchange’s published examples include the following methods and amounts; they apply to that product’s listed schedule, not to all Coinbase services, users, or regions.

Coinbase Exchange method Deposit Withdrawal
ACH Free Free
USD wire $10 $25
SEPA EUR €0.15 Free
USD SWIFT $25 $25

Before using a payment method, confirm that it is available for your location and account and check the current fee schedule: bank rails, eligibility, and prices vary.

Why does withdrawing crypto cost extra?

A crypto withdrawal involves a transaction on a blockchain, but the amount the exchange charges is governed by its own policy. An exchange may estimate the network cost it expects to pay, adjust a displayed charge for network conditions, or use another pricing approach. Do not assume the withdrawal charge is always identical to the blockchain’s transaction fee.

The exchanges describe different approaches. Coinbase Exchange says its withdrawal charge is based on an estimate of network transaction fees it anticipates paying and is disclosed at transaction time. Binance says the displayed withdrawal charge may change with current network conditions and depends on the network selected. Kraken says its withdrawal fees and minimums can change, with the final fee shown during confirmation. Review the live quote rather than treating a published fee page as a guaranteed amount.

Network fees are blockchain costs, not trading fees

A blockchain network may charge for processing a transaction independently of any fee you paid to buy or sell the asset. Ethereum.org describes gas as computational work: on Ethereum, the gas fee equals the gas used multiplied by the cost per gas unit, is paid in ETH, and applies even if the transaction fails. That formula is specific to Ethereum; other blockchains have their own fee mechanics.

Choose a compatible network, not just the cheapest one

Some assets can be sent using more than one network, but the receiving wallet or platform must support the exact asset and network combination. Binance warns that selecting a network that does not match the destination can lead to an unrecoverable loss. Before sending, verify the asset, network, destination address, and any required memo or tag against the receiving service’s instructions. If any detail is uncertain, do not confirm the withdrawal.

How to compare the total cost for your own transaction

Use the same scenario at each exchange so that the comparison is meaningful. Record the values shown for the transaction you actually intend to make, rather than comparing headline rates from different tiers or products.

  1. Match the trade: Use the same asset and trading pair, order size, and order behavior (market or limit) at each venue.
  2. Identify your fee tier and product: Confirm your account’s applicable tier and whether you are using an order book or a separate buy feature. Note any geographic or account eligibility conditions.
  3. Check execution cost: Record the estimated trading fee and the quoted buy or sell price. For a market order, consider that the fill may span multiple prices.
  4. Include fiat movement: Add any deposit or withdrawal charge for the payment method you will use.
  5. Check the crypto withdrawal quote: Select the intended asset and network, then record the displayed charge and minimum from the confirmation screen.
  6. Verify the destination: Make sure the receiving wallet or platform supports the exact asset and network before sending.

A comparison should therefore track maker/taker role, fee tier and qualifying volume, pair and product, spread or possible slippage, fiat rail, crypto withdrawal fee and minimum, network compatibility, and geography or account eligibility. No exchange can be called cheapest without specifying those variables and the transaction being compared.
