CrowdStrike participated in JumpCloud’s $225 million Series F, announced October 19, 2021. The round included an additional $66 million from Atlassian Ventures, CrowdStrike Falcon Fund, NTT Docomo Ventures and other investors, taking JumpCloud’s reported valuation to $2.625 billion and total capital raised above $400 million. The investment was strategic as well as financial: CrowdStrike and JumpCloud aimed to combine endpoint security with a cloud directory that can replace or reduce reliance on legacy Microsoft Active Directory deployments.

What CrowdStrike invested in

JumpCloud’s Series F closed at $225 million on October 19, 2021. The company said the financing included an additional $66 million from Atlassian Ventures, CrowdStrike Falcon Fund, NTT Docomo Ventures and other participants. JumpCloud reported that the round lifted its cumulative funding above $400 million and its valuation to $2.625 billion.

This was a venture investment, not an acquisition of JumpCloud by CrowdStrike. JumpCloud remained a separate company. The stated strategic objective was to accelerate adoption of a modern, cloud-based directory among small and midsize organizations that found traditional Microsoft directory environments difficult to secure, operate or extend.

Why the companies described Active Directory as vulnerable to replacement

JumpCloud presented the financing as a response to limitations in legacy Microsoft directory infrastructure. CrowdStrike’s chief technology officer, Michael Sentonas, said JumpCloud’s cloud directory was designed to address weaknesses in similar legacy products that threat actors actively exploit and to meet the needs of small and midsize enterprises.

Amol Kulkarni, CrowdStrike’s chief product and engineering officer, later summarized the security argument in a November 2, 2021 JumpCloud announcement: “Legacy systems like Active Directory aren’t able to protect organizations against modern security threats.” That is a strategic position, not evidence that every Active Directory deployment is insecure or that JumpCloud is a universal replacement. Active Directory can remain part of a larger identity architecture, particularly where applications and Windows infrastructure depend on it.

The governance connection

On November 2, 2021, JumpCloud announced that Amol Kulkarni joined its board as an independent director. His appointment gave the companies a formal governance connection beyond the investment and reflected the intended product relationship.

JumpCloud co-founder and CEO Rajat Bhargava said the investment would enable “deep integration work with both Atlassian and CrowdStrike” so that JumpCloud’s open, cloud directory could become an obvious choice for customers. The board appointment did not make JumpCloud a CrowdStrike product or establish that CrowdStrike controlled its roadmap.

What the CrowdStrike–JumpCloud integration does

CrowdStrike’s 2022 technical data sheet describes an operational integration centered on Falcon Real Time Response. From a CrowdStrike response session, an administrator can deploy the JumpCloud agent to Windows, Mac and Linux hosts. That cross-platform reach is important for organizations whose identity and device estate extends beyond Windows.

Controls documented in the 2022 data sheet

  • Patch management for enrolled devices.
  • Full-disk encryption controls.
  • Local-user management and control.
  • Diagnostics and remote troubleshooting.
  • Remote lockout, reset and wipe actions.
  • Single sign-on (SSO).
  • Conditional-access multifactor authentication.

The practical design is complementary: CrowdStrike supplies endpoint detection and response and a response channel, while JumpCloud supplies directory, authentication and device-management functions. The data sheet documents available capabilities, not a guarantee that every action works identically on every operating-system version or customer configuration. A deployment should be validated against the organization’s device policies, encryption keys, recovery procedures and change-control requirements.

Is JumpCloud an alternative to Microsoft Active Directory?

It can be an alternative for some organizations, but the comparison is not one-to-one. JumpCloud is a cloud directory and cross-platform identity and device-management service. Traditional Active Directory is an on-premises directory service closely integrated with Windows domains, Group Policy and many datacenter applications. Organizations may replace an on-premises directory, run both during a migration, or use JumpCloud for users and devices that do not fit comfortably into a Windows-centric domain.

Decision factors

Factor JumpCloud’s model Traditional Microsoft Active Directory
Deployment Cloud directory delivered as a service; agents connect managed devices to the service. Typically deployed on organization-controlled Windows Server infrastructure, often with domain controllers and local dependencies.
Operating systems Designed for Windows, macOS and Linux management, with the CrowdStrike data sheet documenting agent deployment on all three. Deepest native alignment with Windows; non-Windows coverage commonly requires additional tools or integrations.
Identity and device management Combines directory, SSO, local-user controls and device administration in one cloud platform. Strong Windows domain identity and policy capabilities; broader device coverage may require separate management products.
Security controls cited in the integration Patch management, full-disk encryption, diagnostics, remote lockout/reset/wipe and conditional-access MFA. Capabilities depend on the Active Directory design and the other products layered around it; the cited materials do not establish an apples-to-apples feature set.
Integration with CrowdStrike Falcon Real Time Response can deploy the JumpCloud agent and support the documented workflows. CrowdStrike can protect Active Directory-connected endpoints, but the specific JumpCloud workflow is distinct from ordinary endpoint deployment.
Administrative burden Less directory infrastructure to host, but agents, policies, enrollment and cloud-service governance still require administration. Requires server, domain-controller, backup, replication, policy and often legacy-application administration.
Total cost Current pricing was not stated in the cited materials. Current licensing, infrastructure and staffing costs were not stated in the cited materials.

The right test is not whether JumpCloud has every Active Directory feature. It is whether the organization needs Windows domain functions that justify operating them, or instead values a cloud control plane for mixed operating systems, distributed workers and smaller IT teams.

How large was JumpCloud at the time?

JumpCloud’s 2021 company description reported more than 120,000 organizations and more than 5,000 paying customers. A 2022 joint CrowdStrike–JumpCloud data sheet reported more than 150,000 organizations and more than 5,000 paying customers.

Those figures are company-reported snapshots tied to their respective publication dates. They are not independently audited market-share measurements and should not be read as current 2026 totals.

What the investment means for buyers

For a small or midsize business

The combination may reduce the number of separate systems needed to enroll devices, manage local accounts, enforce authentication and respond to endpoint incidents. The main potential benefit is operational consistency across Windows, macOS and Linux, not simply a cheaper license.

For an organization with established Active Directory

JumpCloud may be evaluated as a migration destination, a directory for selected users and devices, or a complementary service. Inventory domain-dependent applications, Group Policy settings, service accounts, certificate workflows and offline-login requirements before treating it as a full replacement.

For a security team

The integration offers a path from a CrowdStrike response session to directory and device actions. That power should be governed with role-based access, approval rules, logging, break-glass accounts and tested recovery plans, especially for remote wipe, lockout and encryption operations.

What is not established by the announcements

  • The 2021 financing does not prove that JumpCloud has replaced Microsoft Active Directory across the market.
  • The 2022 data sheet does not establish current product capabilities, operating-system support details or pricing in 2026.
  • No current apples-to-apples JumpCloud-versus-Active-Directory price comparison is provided.
  • The reported organization and customer counts are not independent market-share data.
  • An integration capability does not by itself demonstrate implementation success, performance or security outcomes for a particular customer.

Bottom line

CrowdStrike invested in JumpCloud as part of a strategy to pair endpoint protection with a cloud directory alternative to legacy, Windows-centered identity infrastructure. The documented integration lets Falcon Real Time Response deploy the JumpCloud agent across Windows, Mac and Linux and then apply the listed identity and device controls. JumpCloud is a plausible Active Directory alternative when cross-platform coverage and cloud administration matter more than deep on-premises Windows-domain dependencies; the investment alone is not a reason to migrate, and current pricing and capabilities must be verified directly before a purchasing decision.
