Demonstrators used showroom rallies, signs and chants, consumer boycotts, selling Tesla vehicles and divesting Tesla stock to seek reputational and economic pressure.
The campaign’s largest U.S. actions came in March 2025. More than 50 demonstrations were listed for March 1, while organizers targeted all 277 U.S. Tesla showrooms and service centers for a March 29 “Global Day of Action.”
What Tesla Takedown was protesting
The movement’s official website described a peaceful campaign centered on Tesla showrooms. News reports linked its purpose to opposition to Musk’s prominent DOGE role and to pressure on Tesla through the company’s brand, customers and investors.
At a Boston event, participant Nathan Phillips summarized the economic strategy: “We can impose direct economic damage on Tesla by showing up at showrooms everywhere and boycotting Tesla and telling everyone else to get out, sell your stocks, sell your Teslas.”

How the March 2025 protests unfolded
March 1 national wave
Associated Press reporting said the Tesla Takedown website listed more than 50 demonstrations in the United States on March 1, with additional events planned in England, Spain and Portugal. The Washington Post reported that protests had taken place outside at least 90 Tesla shops and charging stations that weekend, including events in New York, Boston, San Francisco and Tucson.
Attendance varied by location. AP estimated about 300 people at a New York City dealership. Police took nine people into custody there. A custody report does not by itself establish that the broader event was violent or that every person arrested was charged or convicted.

March 29 Global Day of Action
For March 29, organizers sought action at all 277 Tesla showrooms and service centers in the United States and hoped to rally at more than 230 locations outside the country. AP described crowds ranging from a few dozen to hundreds in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Maryland, Minnesota and Texas by early afternoon, with later reports of activity in Washington, Chicago, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Seattle, Virginia, Pennsylvania and Colorado.
The international reach was part of the same pressure campaign. In London, participant Cam Whitten said, “We just want to get loud, make noise, make people aware of the problems that we’re facing.”

How large were the protests?
| Measure | March 1 wave | March 29 action |
|---|---|---|
| Locations | More than 50 demonstrations listed on the Tesla Takedown website; The Washington Post reported at least 90 Tesla shops and charging stations with protests that weekend. | Organizers targeted all 277 U.S. showrooms and service centers and hoped to reach more than 230 additional international locations. |
| Reported crowd scale | About 300 estimated at a New York City dealership; turnout differed by city. | From a few dozen to hundreds at locations reported by AP across numerous states. |
| Geographic spread | Multiple U.S. cities, plus planned events in England, Spain and Portugal. | Many U.S. states, with coordinated actions overseas. |
| Main tactics | Showroom demonstrations, boycotts, calls to sell Tesla vehicles and stock. | Coordinated showroom and service-center demonstrations, alongside the same boycott and divestment message. |
These figures describe different dates and different counting methods. A list of planned locations is not proof that a protest occurred at every site, and the March 1 figures should not be added to the March 29 target.
Were the protests peaceful, and were there arrests?
Organizers repeatedly characterized Tesla Takedown events as peaceful. Arrests did occur: AP reported nine people taken into custody at the March 1 New York demonstration. Police also investigated separate incidents during the wider backlash, including vehicle fires and vandalism.

Those incidents should be kept distinct from ordinary protest attendance. A fire, property-damage case, counterprotest or arrest near a Tesla facility is not evidence that every Tesla Takedown gathering was violent. The available reports do not provide a single nationwide total of arrests or a finding that all events shared the same conduct.

The intended pressure
The campaign sought to make Tesla’s association with Musk’s politics costly by reducing showroom traffic, discouraging purchases, encouraging owners to sell vehicles and urging shareholders to sell stock. The White House rejected the idea that protests would change the DOGE project, saying they “will not deter President Trump and Elon Musk” from pursuing it.

The limits of the evidence
Contemporaneous reporting discussed pressure on Tesla’s sales and market value, but no reviewed source isolates Tesla Takedown as the cause. There is no controlled estimate showing that the campaign produced a specific change in Tesla sales, Tesla’s share price or Musk’s political influence. It is therefore accurate to describe the protests as an attempt to create economic and reputational pressure, not as a demonstrated explanation for any particular business or political outcome.
