An older terminal may use a dial-up modem and a traditional telephone line. A modern mobile terminal or smartphone reader uses cellular data, which is an internet connection. For a new purchase, choose Ethernet, Wi-Fi, cellular, or a phone-connected reader. Keep a traditional phone-line terminal only when an existing legacy system still works, the processor supports it, and upgrading is impractical.
Quick answer: which connection should you choose?
Most new businesses should use an internet-connected terminal. Ethernet and Wi-Fi use a fixed internet service; cellular terminals use a carrier’s mobile-data network; smartphone readers use the phone’s Wi-Fi or cellular data. These options generally authorize faster and support current POS software, contactless payments, digital receipts, updates, inventory, reporting, and mobile operation.
A telephone-jack terminal is a legacy dial-up system. It can still function on a compatible analog line, but it is slow, difficult to integrate, and dependent on telephone infrastructure that many businesses no longer have. PCI Security Standards Council materials still list dial-up as a payment-system category while treating Wi-Fi, cellular, and browser-based systems separately: PCI small-merchant payment systems guidance.
What “phone connection” actually means
Traditional telephone-line (dial-up) connection
The terminal contains a modem and connects to a telephone jack. It dials the processor, sends transaction data over the voice line, and receives an approval or decline. It is not connected to the internet. A shared line may be unavailable while someone is making a call, and compatibility with VoIP, fiber voice adapters, cable telephone, or office phone systems must be confirmed with both the processor and telephone provider.

Cellular phone connection
A cellular terminal uses a SIM or eSIM and a carrier’s 4G/5G data service. That is internet connectivity, not old telephone-line dial-up. It needs adequate coverage, an active plan, and power, but no router or telephone jack. Clover Compact lists Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and LTE, while PayPal Terminal uses Wi-Fi and 4G with an activated SIM (Clover Compact; PayPal hardware).
Connection types compared
| Connection | How it works | Best current use |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional landline | Dial-up modem over a voice line | Existing legacy equipment only |
| Ethernet | Wired internet from a router | Stable fixed checkout |
| Wi-Fi | Wireless internet from a router | Stores, restaurants, offices |
| Cellular/LTE/5G | Internet through a mobile carrier | Mobile vendors or backup connectivity |
| Phone-connected reader | Bluetooth reader; phone supplies app and internet | Low-cost mobile acceptance |
| Tap to Pay | Compatible phone’s NFC acts as reader | Occasional contactless payments |
| Offline mode | Stores transactions and submits them later | Short outages, with merchant risk |
How each system processes a sale
Dial-up terminal
- Enter the amount.
- Insert, swipe, or key the card.
- The modem dials the processor.
- The processor contacts the card network and issuing bank.
- The response returns through the telephone line.
- The terminal displays or prints the result.
Dial-up is generally slower and usually limited to basic processing. Older equipment may lack EMV chip, contactless, tokenization, current encryption, or POS integration. A telephone jack alone does not guarantee compatibility.
Internet-connected terminal
An IP-connected device sends encrypted payment traffic through Ethernet, Wi-Fi, cellular data, or a phone’s connection. Standalone terminals contain their own screen, reader, and often printer. A phone-connected reader relies on a smartphone or tablet for the app, display, battery, and internet. A browser-based virtual terminal lets staff key card details into an online application.
Square Terminal supports Wi-Fi and Ethernet, while PayPal offers both a Bluetooth reader for a phone or tablet and a standalone Wi-Fi/4G terminal (Square Terminal specifications; PayPal hardware).

Speed, reliability, and outages
Internet terminals usually deliver a faster, more capable checkout, but no connection guarantees approval. Performance depends on processor response, router or cellular conditions, firmware, payment type, and any POS integration. Ethernet is often predictable at a fixed counter; properly configured Wi-Fi can work well and is easier to place; cellular avoids local Wi-Fi but depends on coverage and carrier service.

What can fail?
- Dial-up: analog-line failure, shared-line use, wiring, modem, power, or processor discontinuation.
- Wi-Fi: weak signal, changed password, router restrictions, guest-network captive portals, or ISP outage.
- Ethernet: cable, router, or ISP failure.
- Cellular: dead zone, carrier congestion, inactive SIM, expired plan, or depleted battery.
- Any system: processor, card-network, merchant-account, or terminal-software outage.
Offline mode is deferred submission, not guaranteed approval
Some internet terminals store transactions while disconnected and submit them after reconnection. Square says offline payments must be uploaded within its applicable window and that the merchant is responsible for expired, declined, or disputed transactions: Square offline-mode guidance. Clover also offers Offline Payments on eligible devices: Clover payment acceptance.
Before relying on it, confirm the exact model’s supported card types, maximum duration and amount, tip/refund rules, activation steps, and who absorbs a later decline or dispute. Use it for short outages and amounts your business can afford to lose.
Security and transaction type
A phone line is not automatically safer than the internet. Security depends on EMV and contactless capability, encryption or tokenization, secure configuration, updates, network controls, account security, receipt handling, and whether card data enters a general-purpose computer. PCI’s small-merchant resources explain that terminal-only, wireless, mobile-reader, and virtual-terminal environments have different control requirements (PCI payment systems; PCI data-security guide).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConnection method does not determine transaction classification. A customer who taps or inserts a card at a cellular terminal is generally card-present. A staff member typing card details from a phone order into a virtual terminal is card-not-present. Clover describes manually entered phone-order payments as keyed-in transactions with different pricing: Clover pricing.
Which setup fits your business?
Fixed storefront or restaurant counter
Choose Ethernet when the router is nearby and predictable connectivity matters. Choose Wi-Fi when cabling is inconvenient or terminals move. Square Terminal needs an optional Ethernet hub, listed at $39 on its U.S. product page: Square Terminal.

Food truck, market seller, contractor, or delivery business
Choose a standalone cellular terminal or a phone-connected reader. Verify coverage at actual selling locations, battery life, data terms, and receipt needs. Tap to Pay can remove separate-reader hardware for supported contactless transactions, but device, operating-system, app, and account compatibility vary.
Rural or unreliable-broadband location
Test cellular coverage and consider a cellular primary connection, Ethernet plus cellular backup, or documented offline mode. A backup connection cannot solve a processor or card-network outage.
Existing legacy installation
Keep dial-up only if the terminal and processor still support it, a compatible analog line exists, transactions are basic, slow checkout is acceptable, and modern POS or contactless features are unnecessary. Otherwise replace the terminal rather than trying to make unsupported phone service work.

Troubleshooting connection problems
Dial-up will not connect
Check that the line is active, analog, dedicated or otherwise supported, correctly configured, and not in use. Ask the processor whether dial-up for that terminal remains supported. If not, replacing the line will not restore service.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a credit card machine use a regular phone jack?
Only a compatible legacy dial-up terminal and supported analog telephone service can use a phone jack. Confirm compatibility with the payment processor and phone provider; VoIP and digital systems may not support modem transmission.
Is cellular payment processing an internet connection?
Yes. A terminal’s SIM or a smartphone’s mobile data provides internet access through a carrier, unlike dial-up over a voice telephone line.
Does offline mode approve a card without internet?
Usually no. The device stores the transaction for later submission, and the merchant may be responsible if it expires, is declined, or is disputed.
The Bottom Line
If “phone connection” means an old telephone jack, treat it as legacy equipment and keep it only when an existing, supported system must remain in service. If it means a smartphone or cellular signal, it is a modern internet connection. New buyers should choose Ethernet, Wi-Fi, cellular, a phone-connected reader, or Tap to Pay according to mobility, outage tolerance, POS requirements, and total processing cost.
