Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Short answer: A March 2024 HotHardware report identified possible mining-driven demand for AMD’s Ryzen 9 7950X, not a confirmed market-wide shortage. The original headline said “Ryzen 9 7590X,” but the article body and URL clearly refer to the 7950X. Its retailer check found a mixed picture, and neither current availability nor lasting supply impact can be established from that report.
First, the model number was wrong in the headline
HotHardware’s March 13, 2024 article was titled with “Ryzen 9 7590X,” a model designation that does not match the processor discussed in the story. The article text, quoted posts and URL identify the chip as the Ryzen 9 7950X. This distinction matters: the evidence concerns the 7950X, not a verified 7590X product.
The report reproduced a question from MEGAsizeGPU (@Zed__Wang), described by HotHardware as a notable leaker: “7950X is out of stock everywhere. What happened? Are there any special needs for this CPUs, or is it discontinued?” That post was an observation and a question, not proof that every retailer had no inventory or that AMD had discontinued the processor.
What the March 2024 stock check found
HotHardware’s own quick check documented different results by retailer. These were observations on March 13, 2024, not a current price or availability guide.
#1 Best Overall
- Processor consumes less power to offer maximum productivity with added usability
- Ryzen 9 product line processor for better usability and increased efficiency
- 5 nm process technology provides optimal processing results with added usability
- Hexadeca-core (16 Core) processor core efficiently handles data to ensure quicker transfer of information with maximum usability
- 16 MB L2 plus 64 MB L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance
| Retailer | Observation reported by HotHardware |
|---|---|
| Amazon | Out of stock except for higher-priced marketplace listings |
| Newegg | Out of stock except for higher-priced marketplace listings |
| B&H Photo | Unavailable in the spot check |
| GameStop | Unavailable in the spot check |
| Best Buy | In stock at $549.99 during the March 2024 check |
| AMD’s store | In stock at $599 during the March 2024 check |
That mix does not support the literal claim that the processor was unavailable “everywhere.” The report supplied no market-wide inventory statistic, shipment data or retailer count, so it cannot establish the size, duration or cause of any shortage. The prices above are historical observations and should not be used as today’s prices.
Why mining was raised as a possible demand driver
Reported interest in QUBIC
HotHardware connected the concern to reported interest in mining QUBIC (QBIC), a cryptocurrency project. MEGAsizeGPU later characterized the 7950X by writing, “Now I understand, 7950X is the king in Qubic mining.” That is the account’s characterization, not an independently verified ranking of mining hardware.

- Cooler not included, liquid cooler recommended
AVX-512 support
The report said the 7950X supports AVX-512, an instruction-set feature that can benefit some CPU-focused workloads. HotHardware presented that capability as one reason the chip could attract attention from a CPU-mining community. The report did not demonstrate that AVX-512 demand had caused a sustained supply disruption.
What the reported mining-profit figure does—and does not—mean
HotHardware said Profit-mine’s calculator estimated approximately $3 of profit per 24 hours at the then-current rate, assuming the processor ran at 170 watts. This was a calculator result reported in 2024, not guaranteed income, a current estimate or a return available in every location.

- The best for creators meets the best for gamers, can deliver ultra-fast 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
- 16 Cores and 32 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 5" architecture
- 5.7 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 80 MB cache, DDR5-5600 support
- For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select motherboards
- Cooler not included, liquid cooler recommended
- Electricity prices can eliminate or reverse the estimated profit.
- Cryptocurrency prices, network activity and mining difficulty change over time.
- Actual results depend on hardware settings, cooling, uptime and other operating costs.
- The 170-watt figure is an assumption in the reported calculation, not a promise about every system’s power draw.
Anyone evaluating mining economics should calculate revenue and electricity expense using current local rates and current network data rather than reuse the 2024 number.
What is known about the Ryzen 9 7950X in the report
HotHardware reproduced these specifications for the 7950X: 16 cores, 32 threads, a 4.5 GHz base clock, a maximum boost clock of 5.7 GHz and 64 MB of L3 cache. Those figures are included here as specifications reported by that 2024 article; they were not independently checked against current AMD documentation for this article.

Does this prove crypto mining caused a shortage?
No. The report established a plausible explanation worth monitoring, based on reported QUBIC interest, AVX-512 support and a mixed retailer snapshot. It did not establish causation, a market-wide shortage, discontinuation, a shipment shortfall or a lasting effect on supply. HotHardware itself cautioned that it was too early to panic.
It also cannot answer what the processor costs or where it is in stock now. Retail conditions after March 2024, any later mining demand and any subsequent supply response are outside the evidence in that report.

How to interpret the story if you are considering the processor
- Identify the exact model. Search for “AMD Ryzen 9 7950X processor,” not the erroneous 7590X wording from the headline.
- Check current stock and price directly. The Best Buy and AMD prices cited above were from March 2024 and are not current quotations.
- Separate availability from profitability. A short-lived retailer gap does not demonstrate mining demand, and a historical calculator estimate does not guarantee a return.
- Price electricity before mining. Use your utility’s rate, expected system power and current network conditions; include cooling and hardware costs.
- Assess the processor for your primary workload. Do not buy based solely on an attributed claim that it is a mining “king,” because that statement was not independently established.
Source and evidence boundary
The underlying report is Paul Lilly’s March 13, 2024 HotHardware article, “Forget GPUs, Crypto Mining Is Suddenly A Threat To AMD Ryzen 9 7590X CPU Supply.” It is a secondary report and does not independently verify current AMD specifications, QUBIC’s technical economics, present-day retail inventory, present-day mining revenue or later market effects.
