Probably not in the way the headline suggests. Morgan Stanley reportedly estimated a median case of about $130 billion in annual Apple robotics revenue by 2040, assuming roughly 9% of the global robotics market. A bullish case approached $300 billion at about 22% share. Those figures describe a speculative future business, not Apple guidance. They also are not directly comparable with Apple’s claim that its App Store ecosystem facilitated more than $1.4 trillion in developer billings and sales during 2025.
What Morgan Stanley actually estimated
The $130 billion figure comes from Morgan Stanley reporting summarized by secondary outlets, rather than a publicly available Apple forecast or an independently published Morgan Stanley model. Its reported median scenario assumes Apple captures approximately 9% of a broadly defined robotics market by 2040. A reported bull case assumes about 22% share and revenue near $300 billion.
The estimate reportedly includes robot hardware plus associated services and recurring monetization. Because Apple has not launched a publicly announced commercial robot, these are scenarios for a business that does not yet exist as a disclosed product line.
| Reported scenario | Annual revenue by 2040 | Assumed robotics share |
|---|---|---|
| Median | About $130 billion | About 9% |
| Bull | Nearly $300 billion | About 22% |
Yahoo Finance’s account identifies the median estimate as approximately $130 billion (also reported as $133 billion in the headline). AppleInsider reported the more optimistic scenario.

“As big as the App Store” depends on which number you mean
Apple’s June 4, 2026 report says the App Store ecosystem facilitated more than $1.4 trillion in developer billings and sales during 2025. That is economic activity passing through or being influenced by apps, not Apple’s App Store revenue.
| Measure for 2025 | Apple-reported amount | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Total ecosystem billings and sales | More than $1.4 trillion | Broad activity facilitated by apps |
| Physical goods and services | About $1.1 trillion | Retail, travel, grocery, food delivery and similar purchases |
| Digital goods and services | $149 billion | Digital purchases and services |
| In-app advertising | $151 billion | Advertising connected to the ecosystem |
The ecosystem had more than 850 million average weekly users across 175 countries and regions in 2025, according to Apple’s report. Apple’s 2024 estimate was nearly $1.3 trillion, documented in its prior ecosystem report.
Four different comparisons
- Apple revenue: commissions, subscriptions, advertising and related services recorded by Apple.
- Developer billings: money spent on digital goods and services through the App Store.
- Facilitated sales: physical purchases made through apps.
- Total ecosystem activity: the broadest combination of these categories.
Apple does not report App Store revenue as a standalone line item. Its Form 10-Q groups the App Store within Services, alongside items such as advertising and cloud services; see the filing for the quarter ended March 28, 2026.
Therefore, $130 billion of Apple-recognized robotics revenue would be an enormous new product business, but it would be far below the $1.4 trillion in ecosystem-wide App Store activity. A robot ecosystem that facilitated $130 billion of third-party transactions would be a different claim again.

What Apple is reportedly exploring
On August 13, 2025, Bloomberg reported that Apple was exploring home-robotics concepts, including a tabletop device with an iPad-like display on a motorized arm. The device was described as potentially turning toward speakers or tracking people in a room. The report also mentioned a home hub or AI companion, a wheeled home robot and longer-term humanoid ideas.
Bloomberg reported a possible 2027 target for the tabletop product. That is a reported development timetable, not a confirmed launch date. Apple has not publicly announced a commercial robot lineup or a robotics revenue plan. The reporting is summarized in Bloomberg’s article.
Why the Apple platform theory is attractive
The bullish argument is not simply that Apple could sell a machine. It is that Apple could combine hardware, software and recurring services in a new physical-computing platform.
- Premium industrial design and control of chips, sensors and operating systems.
- A large installed base of iPhones, iPads and home devices.
- On-device AI and Apple Intelligence capabilities.
- Subscriptions, cloud features, accessories, maintenance and financing.
- Privacy and permission controls for a device operating inside the home.
- A potential third-party marketplace for robot capabilities.
Apple says its developer tools and Foundation Models framework let developers build features using on-device models; its public capabilities are described at Apple’s AI developer page. That supports a possible software foundation, but Apple has not announced a robotics SDK, robot App Store or permission framework for physical actions.

The original App Store became large because it combined distribution, payments, subscriptions, a huge installed base and a developer economy. A successful robot product would need comparable network effects. Selling a popular robot by itself would not recreate the App Store model.
Robotics is not one market
Any market-share assumption needs a precise denominator. Robotics includes categories with different buyers, prices, safety requirements and competitors:
- Home-assistance and companion robots.
- Wheeled mobile robots and smart-home devices.
- Humanoid robots.
- Industrial, warehouse and logistics systems.
- Healthcare and elder-care machines.
- Drones, autonomous vehicles, components, simulation and software.
Deloitte’s 2026 analysis treats robotics broadly, spanning industrial systems, humanoids, drones and autonomous machines. It projects industrial robot installations above 5 million cumulatively in 2025 and roughly 5.5 million in 2026, while identifying data, integration and cybersecurity as bottlenecks.
The reported Morgan Stanley share could refer to humanoids, consumer robots, all global robotics revenue, or hardware plus services across several categories. Without that definition, a 9% share cannot be assessed against a consistent market.

What $130 billion would require
Simple arithmetic shows the scale implied by a hardware-led strategy. These are illustrations, not shipment forecasts.
| Illustrative average revenue per robot | Annual-equivalent units for $130 billion |
|---|---|
| $3,000 | More than 43 million |
| $10,000 | 13 million |
| $30,000 | About 4.3 million |
The actual mix could be very different. Revenue might combine lower-priced devices with subscriptions, enterprise contracts, repairs, accessories and developer commissions. A robot-as-a-service model could spread payments over time rather than produce a large one-time sale.
Hardware-led model
Apple would need substantial manufacturing capacity for actuators, motors, batteries, sensors and safety systems, while maintaining reliability and support for complex machines.
Services-led model
Recurring revenue could come from AI plans, home automation, cloud processing, fleet management, maintenance, replacement coverage and paid capabilities.

Platform-led model
Apple could take fees from a robotics ecosystem, but that would require public APIs, developer tools, distribution, payments and safety controls that let third parties add useful capabilities without creating unacceptable physical risks.
What could make the forecast work
Bull case
Apple launches a genuinely useful home robot, reaches premium global distribution, builds trust around privacy and safety, and attracts developers. Hardware, AI subscriptions, home services and accessories reinforce one another.
Base case
Apple produces successful tabletop or home devices, but robotics remains a meaningful product category rather than a second App Store. Services contribute, while the installed base grows more slowly than the most optimistic scenario assumes.
Bear case
Apple delays or cancels the project, or robots remain too expensive, unreliable or legally risky for mass adoption. Consumers may prefer cheaper task-specific machines, while businesses choose established industrial specialists.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe obstacles investors should test
- Usefulness: A novelty demo is not enough; households need reliable task completion.
- Safety and liability: Autonomous movement creates physical injury, property-damage and insurance exposure.
- Privacy: Persistent cameras, microphones and mapping raise surveillance and data-governance concerns.
- Manufacturing: Robotics requires precision mechanical production that differs from assembling phones and watches.
- Economics: Repairs, batteries, actuators, software support and cloud costs can erode margins.
- Developer incentives: Developers need a large installed base before investing in robot-specific applications.
- Competition: Specialized robots may outperform expensive general-purpose humanoids on individual tasks.
- Premium pricing: Apple’s pricing power could conflict with the mass adoption needed for platform effects.
- Timing: A possible 2027 tabletop device would not prove that Apple can reach mass-market or humanoid scale by 2040.
How to judge future headlines about Apple robotics
- Ask whether the number is Apple-recognized revenue or third-party commerce facilitated by robots.
- Identify the robotics market included: home, humanoid, industrial, services or all categories.
- Check the assumed average selling price, replacement cycle, gross margin and recurring revenue.
- Look for evidence of a shipping product, developer tools, manufacturing commitments and safety approvals.
- Separate an analyst’s market-share assumption from Apple guidance or an industry consensus.
Verdict
Apple robotics could become a major business if Apple turns a useful robot into a platform linking hardware, AI, services and developers. Morgan Stanley’s reported $130 billion median case is plausible only as a long-range scenario with demanding assumptions, not as an established outcome.
The phrase “as big as today’s App Store” is misleading without a definition. Compared with Apple’s more than $1.4 trillion of App Store-facilitated 2025 commerce, $130 billion is much smaller. Compared with Apple’s own future product-line revenue, it would be extraordinary. The evidence supports “potentially a major Apple business,” not “will match the App Store.”
