The integration lets eligible users buy supported cryptocurrencies—including Bitcoin where available—with an eligible debit card in Apple Pay and send the purchase to a wallet or app. It is an Onramp feature, not a promise that Apple Pay works for every Coinbase product, country, card, or crypto asset.
What Coinbase Onramp does
Coinbase Onramp is payment infrastructure that lets a wallet, decentralized application, or other partner app offer fiat-to-crypto purchases. The app can send a user to a Coinbase-hosted checkout or build a more integrated checkout using Coinbase’s APIs. The purchased crypto can be delivered to a destination wallet address rather than to a Coinbase.com account. Coinbase announced the Apple Pay integration on December 2, 2024; its current Onramp overview continues to describe Apple Pay guest checkout.
This differs from buying on Coinbase.com, which is the consumer exchange, and from Coinbase Wallet, a self-custody wallet. Apple Pay is the payment interface; Coinbase Onramp handles the purchase flow and transfer. A partner app must support the integration for the option to appear.
Who can use Apple Pay through Onramp?
Coinbase’s documented guest-checkout flow is intended for U.S. residents and supports a debit card, including a debit card stored in Apple Pay. The user may not need a Coinbase account, but guest checkout is not anonymous: Coinbase’s requirements include contact information, phone verification, payment details, and agreement to its terms. Credit cards should not be assumed to work; Coinbase’s U.S. Onramp documentation describes debit-card checkout and does not list U.S. credit cards as supported in its standard payment-method table.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Availability is narrower than Onramp’s overall country coverage. The payment method, asset, network, country, card issuer, device, and partner app can all affect whether Apple Pay is offered. Coinbase describes its native React Native Apple Pay integration as U.S.-only for iOS users with a valid U.S. phone number. Check Coinbase’s payment-method availability and country and currency information for the applicable flow.
Can you buy Bitcoin?
Bitcoin appears as a possible purchase currency in Coinbase’s Onramp API examples, but that does not guarantee availability for every user. Coinbase determines supported purchase options dynamically based on factors such as location, network, and payment method. Check the options and quote displayed in the wallet or app before paying. The Onramp order documentation and buy-quote API describe the purchase flow and supported options.

How an Apple Pay purchase works
In a Coinbase-hosted checkout
- In a supported wallet or app, choose its buy or fund option and start a Coinbase Onramp purchase.
- Review the asset, network, destination wallet, and available payment methods. Choose Apple Pay if it is offered.
- Authorize payment with an eligible debit card in Apple Pay, then review the final amount and confirm.
- Track the order and wait for the crypto transfer and any required blockchain confirmations before relying on the balance in the destination wallet.
The app can redirect the user to a Coinbase-hosted page, which handles checkout rather than requiring the partner to build its own full payment interface.
In a headless or native integration
A partner app can create an order through Coinbase’s API and present the payment experience within its own interface. Apple Pay still requires an explicit user gesture; an app cannot silently start a payment. Coinbase documents hosted and headless approaches in its headless Onramp overview.

Fees, minimums, and limits
Apple Pay does not make a crypto purchase free. Total cost can include an exchange-rate spread, Coinbase or exchange fees, a payment-method charge, and a network fee for an on-chain transfer. Coinbase’s consumer help page gives estimates for particular flows, including 5% for U.S. guest checkout with a debit card and 1%–2% for Stripe in the U.S. and European Union using credit card or Apple Pay. These are estimates for specified flows, not a universal Apple Pay rate; Coinbase’s developer FAQ also describes different card-fee figures. The consumer fee information and developer FAQ should be read alongside the quote shown at checkout.
Before confirming, compare the fiat amount charged with the crypto amount received, the exchange rate, each listed fee, and the network. Coinbase’s order response can separate subtotal, total, exchange fees, and network fees; the order API documentation gives an example.

For the documented U.S. hosted guest debit-card flow, Coinbase lists a $5 minimum and a standard spending limit of up to $500 per week. Some applications may have higher limits, and eligible users may be able to seek an increase—Coinbase documents possible weekly limits up to $2,500 after additional verification. These are not guaranteed universal limits; the user’s flow and verification status matter. See Coinbase’s hosted Onramp overview, user-limit API, and limits-upgrade guidance.
Apple Pay compared with other ways to pay
| Payment route | Potential advantage | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Pay | Quick checkout with an eligible debit card; can be embedded in a wallet or app. | Regional and card eligibility, limits, and the live quote determine whether it suits the purchase. |
| ACH bank transfer | May suit larger or recurring purchases. | Bank linking and settlement timing can add friction; availability and fees depend on the flow. |
| Buying through a Coinbase account | Uses Coinbase’s account-based purchase experience and available linked funding methods. | It may not provide the embedded purchase experience inside a third-party wallet or app. |
| Another onramp provider | May offer different payment methods, markets, assets, or integration choices. | Compare actual country coverage, all-in quote, limits, destination support, and failed-payment handling rather than Apple Pay availability alone. |
What to check if something goes wrong
Apple Pay is missing
- Confirm that the country, asset, and network are supported for this purchase and that the partner app has enabled Apple Pay.
- Check that Apple Pay is configured on a supported device or browser and that an eligible debit card is available.
- Some web integrations may offer an Apple Pay QR-code fallback. Coinbase documents unsupported-device or browser errors in its headless integration guidance.
The card is declined
Check that the card is an eligible debit card, has sufficient available funds, and is permitted by the issuer for crypto-related purchases. Also check billing and residence information and whether the purchase exceeds the Onramp limit. A card saved in Apple Wallet is not necessarily accepted for every transaction.

The payment appears, but the crypto is not in the wallet
Payment authorization, order completion, blockchain broadcast, blockchain confirmation, and wallet display are separate stages. Check the order status in the purchasing app and, if available, the transaction on the relevant network before treating a card authorization as a completed crypto transfer. For help with a reversal or failed order, check the specific order and payment-provider guidance; a card dispute and an on-chain transfer do not work the same way.
The destination or network may be wrong
Before confirming, verify the destination address, blockchain network, and whether the wallet supports the selected asset. A transfer sent to an incompatible address or network may be unrecoverable. Once crypto has been sent on-chain, it generally cannot be reversed like a card payment.
Notes for developers integrating Apple Pay
Developers can choose a Coinbase-hosted checkout or a headless experience embedded in a partner app. Coinbase’s Onramp documentation describes project setup, sandbox testing, and production access. The hosted route delegates more of the checkout interface; headless implementations provide more control over the in-app experience but require the partner to handle integration and order-state updates. Coinbase’s Onramp product page distinguishes hosted and headless options.
- Initialize Onramp URLs securely with a session token. Coinbase says tokens are single-use and expire after five minutes, so generate a fresh token for each user session. See the Onramp overview.
- For the documented v2 Apple Pay order flow, provide a verified phone number. Coinbase says verification is required again if the verification timestamp is more than 60 days old. See the order API reference.
- Use Coinbase’s Buy Options and quote information to determine which currencies, networks, and payment methods are currently available, rather than hard-coding broad availability claims.
- Require a user gesture to launch Apple Pay and handle success, failure, and status updates. A payment authorization alone is not proof that the asset has reached the destination wallet.
Coinbase describes hosted Onramp as having no developer fees and headless Onramp as requiring an access fee; full access beyond trial-mode limits involves onboarding. Those developer costs are separate from what a consumer may pay for an individual purchase.
