On April 11, 2013, Equinix announced that CME Group planned to establish a European CME Globex hub at its LD4/LD5 data-center campus in Slough, near London. Equinix said the hub was scheduled to open in May 2013; the announcement explains the companies’ rationale and proposed customer connections, but does not establish whether it opened on schedule or remains in operation.
What was announced in April 2013?
Equinix said CME Group was establishing a European hub for CME Globex inside the LD4/LD5 campus. The companies presented the location as a way to bring CME closer to European trading platforms and electronic-trading customers. The stated opening date was May 2013, a schedule announced at the time rather than independently verified completion. Equinix’s April 11, 2013 release set out the plan; Data Center Knowledge reported it the following day.
What is CME Globex?
CME Globex is CME Group’s electronic trading platform. The 2013 announcement concerned locating a European hub for that platform within a data-center campus—not a consumer-facing trading product or a recommendation about personal trading equipment.
Where are Equinix LD4 and LD5, and why choose them?
LD4 and LD5 are part of Equinix’s Slough campus, near London. Equinix said the location would align CME’s infrastructure with regional customers and place it among businesses already present in Equinix facilities. CME’s managing director for EMEA, William Knottenbelt, said the company saw growing demand from customers based in Europe and described the hub as intended to improve cost and technology management and provide accelerated access to CME markets. Those are the companies’ stated reasons and expected benefits, not independently measured outcomes.

Equinix’s release also said approximately 25% of CME Group’s electronic trading volume came from outside the United States, primarily from EMEA. This is Equinix’s historical, company-reported figure from 2013; it should not be read as CME’s current geographic volume mix.
How could customers connect to the announced hub?
Equinix described two business-to-business connection routes for interested customers:
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
| Route | What the 2013 announcement described |
|---|---|
| Physical presence | Acquire data-center space in LD4/LD5 and cross-connect to CME Globex. |
| Remote access | Lease a line to connect to the platform. |
The release did not specify prices, latency, service-level terms, or whether either route is currently available for CME Globex at LD4/LD5.

The cited 2013 materials establish that Equinix announced a hub and scheduled it to open in May. They do not independently confirm that it opened then. Later Equinix announcements also do not settle the status of this specific CME hub.

For broader context, Equinix announced a planned LD7 facility at its Slough campus in 2018, describing intended colocation and interconnection capacity. In a November 2022 release, Equinix described £179 million in UK investments involving expansions at LD7 and LD8 and the opening of MA5 in Manchester. That release also described an ecosystem of more than 1,500 companies across London and Manchester, including 250+ networks, 460+ cloud and IT service providers, 350+ financial-services firms, and 100+ content and digital-media businesses. These were company-reported figures for the combined UK ecosystem, not measures of LD4/LD5 or the CME hub.
Equinix’s 2018 announcement described LD7 as a planned $120 million facility, with 1,750 cabinets in its initial phase and capacity for up to 2,650 at full build. It also cited a $387 million total investment across multiple UK projects in 2018/19. Those were announcement figures and plans from that period, not evidence of CME’s hub status. Equinix’s current London facilities page describes services and the London ecosystem, but it likewise does not verify the operating status of CME’s particular LD4/LD5 hub.
