Cloudflare completed its acquisition of Area 1 Security on April 1, 2022, after announcing the deal on February 23. The announced value was approximately $162 million, with 40–50% of the consideration payable in Cloudflare Class A common stock and the rest in cash, subject to customary adjustments. Area 1’s email protection is now presented as Cloudflare Email Security.

What was Area 1 Security?

Area 1 Security was a cloud-native email security company focused on identifying and stopping phishing campaigns before they caused damage. Cloudflare said Area 1’s platform worked alongside existing email offerings. In its February 2022 acquisition announcement, Cloudflare reported that Area 1 had blocked more than 40 million malicious phishing campaigns during 2021; that is a company-reported figure, not an independently validated measurement. Why did Cloudflare acquire Area 1?

Cloudflare said it wanted to add email security to its broader Zero Trust approach by combining Area 1’s technology and expertise with Cloudflare’s global network. The rationale was to extend protection across another major business communication channel. That explains Cloudflare’s stated strategy; it is not independent evidence that the combined service outperforms alternatives.

In the announcement, Cloudflare co-founder and CEO Matthew Prince called email “the largest cyber attack vector on the Internet” and argued that integrated email security was important to a Zero Trust network. That statement represents the company’s perspective, rather than a neutral research finding.

What happened to Area 1’s product?

Cloudflare now documents the service as Cloudflare Email Security. Its materials describe protection against phishing, malware, business email compromise, vendor email fraud, and spam. The service is designed to work with existing email providers such as Outlook or Gmail, with deployment options that include API integration, BCC or journaling, and MX or inline configurations.
