Cisco did not disclose a purchase price; 451 Research estimated the deal at about $350 million, an analyst estimate rather than a confirmed figure. Robust Intelligence is no longer presented as an independent Cisco Investments company. Its technology and team now underpin Cisco AI Defense and Cisco Foundation AI.
For buyers, the important question is not simply what Cisco bought. It is whether Cisco can turn specialist model-security technology into practical discovery, testing and runtime controls across the models, applications, agents and tools an enterprise actually operates.
The deal in brief
| Milestone | What is established |
|---|---|
| Intent announced | August 26, 2024, in Cisco’s acquisition announcement: Cisco announcement |
| Completion | Cisco said the acquisition completed September 24, 2024, in the same announcement. |
| Price | Not disclosed by Cisco. 451 Research estimated approximately $350 million: 451 Research reprint. |
| Current home | Cisco AI Defense and Cisco Foundation AI, rather than a separately marketed Robust Intelligence product: Cisco status page. |
Cisco’s later corporate page labels the transaction as occurring in October 2024, but the acquisition announcement’s completion update gives the more precise September 24 date. The distinction matters when separating announcement, closing and subsequent product integration.
What Robust Intelligence contributed
Robust Intelligence focused on securing models and AI applications throughout development and production. Cisco’s acquisition announcement identified automated model assessment, AI-risk mitigation, algorithmic red teaming and AI Firewall technology, alongside expertise in detecting and mitigating prompt injection, data poisoning, jailbreaking and unintended model behavior. Findings could be mapped to frameworks such as OWASP and MITRE ATLAS.

Why Cisco wanted the company
AI adds a security layer that ordinary controls may miss
AI systems expose attack surfaces in models, prompts, retrieval data, training pipelines, tools, agents and connected data. Network and endpoint products remain important, but they do not automatically understand unsafe model behavior, prompt injection or an agent using a legitimate tool for an unintended purpose.
A network-and-platform distribution thesis
Cisco’s rationale was to combine Robust Intelligence’s AI-specific controls with Cisco networking, security, telemetry and threat-intelligence platforms. Cisco argued that controls could be enforced in existing AI traffic flows rather than requiring every development team to build a separate security stack. The commercial bet is equally significant: Cisco can distribute a specialist capability through its installed enterprise base and connect it with Security Cloud, Secure Access, Talos, Splunk and endpoint products.
That does not make Cisco automatically better than a specialist vendor. It makes the acquisition both a technology purchase and an architecture and distribution bet.

The public evidence supports integration into Cisco’s portfolio, not continued operation under the original brand, product catalog or licensing model. Buyers should therefore ask Cisco which capabilities, components and support commitments are included in a current order rather than assuming a former Robust Intelligence SKU remains available.
What Cisco AI Defense does now
Cisco positions AI Defense as an end-to-end platform for enterprises that build, use or operate AI: AI Defense product page. Its published capability areas are:
- AI model and application validation: algorithmic red teaming and vulnerability assessment. Cisco’s datasheet says evaluations cover more than 200 threat subcategories: AI Defense datasheet.
- Runtime protection: production guardrails intended to detect and block prompt injection, data leakage, harmful behavior and other attacks.
- AI cloud visibility: discovery of AI workloads, applications, models, data and users.
- AI access: visibility and policy enforcement for employees using third-party AI applications.
- AI supply-chain risk management: governance for models, files and other AI components.
- Agentic-AI controls: MCP-server scanning and runtime controls addressing memory poisoning, tool misuse, privilege escalation, intent hijacking and deceptive behavior.
These descriptions explain the intended scope; they do not establish comparative detection rates, false-positive rates, latency or coverage across every cloud and model provider.

Explorer Edition
Cisco launched AI Defense: Explorer Edition on March 23, 2026, as a self-service red-teaming product with no upfront cost: Explorer announcement. Cisco added Agent Validation on June 16, 2026, extending testing to agent harnesses, tool routes, indirect content channels and persistent state across sessions: Agent Validation update.
“No upfront cost” describes the published entry offer. It does not establish unlimited use, perpetual free availability or free enterprise runtime protection. Explorer is a testing and validation starting point, not the entire AI Defense platform.

Enterprise AI Defense
Cisco’s product page directs buyers to “Request a demo.” No public enterprise list price, usage cap, contract term or support schedule is provided in the reviewed Cisco materials. A quote may depend on users, traffic, models, enforcement points, Cisco subscriptions and services.
Related controls
Cisco Secure Access’s AI Access capability focuses on governing employee use of third-party generative-AI applications: AI Access. That addresses a different problem from securing a model-development pipeline, so it should not be treated as a substitute for all AI Defense functions.

Who should consider Cisco’s approach?
- Large organizations already operating Cisco networking, security, Secure Access, Talos, Splunk or endpoint products.
- Security teams that need a consolidated inventory of AI assets plus validation and runtime policy.
- Enterprises adopting agents and MCP-connected workflows, where tool calls, credentials and persistent state create risks beyond chatbot prompts.
- Teams that want to begin with self-service red teaming and then evaluate a sales-led enterprise deployment.
When it may be a poor fit
- A small AI team seeking only a lightweight, developer-first model scanner.
- An organization with little Cisco infrastructure that cannot justify platform consolidation.
- A buyer needing only model evaluation rather than AI-access controls, discovery, supply-chain governance and runtime enforcement.
- A highly customized agent environment that requires testing beyond a vendor’s predefined matrix.
- A procurement team that requires transparent enterprise pricing before a proof of concept.
Before signing, confirm supported cloud and model providers, orchestration frameworks, MCP implementation, deployment topology, data residency, where enforcement occurs and what instrumentation or routing is required.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the acquisition does not prove
Security quality still needs independent validation
The transaction demonstrates Cisco’s commitment to AI security, not detection quality. The reviewed materials contain no independent benchmark comparing AI Defense with specialist vendors, nor evidence establishing false-positive rates, performance overhead or deployment success across heterogeneous environments.
Network visibility has boundaries
Encrypted, local, side-channel or application-internal AI interactions may not be equally visible. Ask for a deployment diagram showing which traffic, prompts, tool calls and data paths are inspected and where controls are applied.

- Runs UniFi Network for full-stack network management
- Manages 30+ UniFi Network devices and 300+ clients
- 1 Gbps routing with IDS/IPS
- Multi-WAN load balancing
- 0.96" LCM status display
Red teaming is one control, not a complete program
Testing can expose weaknesses, but it does not replace secure data handling, identity and access controls, model governance, software supply-chain security, monitoring, incident response or human review.
Agents change the risk model
An agent can call tools, mutate state and use credentials across several steps. Passing prompt tests does not demonstrate that the connected workflow is safe. Proof-of-concept testing should include prompt injection, data leakage, tool misuse, privilege escalation, memory poisoning, false positives and latency across realistic agent and MCP flows.
How to evaluate Cisco against specialists
| Buyer priority | Cisco AI Defense | Possible specialist advantage |
|---|---|---|
| Existing Cisco estate | Potential adjacency to networking, security, Talos, Secure Access and Splunk. | More neutral integration across heterogeneous stacks. |
| Discovery and governance | Broad platform positioning across assets, users, models and supply chain. | Narrower implementation focused on a specific control. |
| Red teaming | Algorithmic testing and Explorer Edition entry point. | Some products may be more developer-centric or customizable. |
| Runtime enforcement | Network-layer enforcement and guardrails are central to Cisco’s positioning. | A dedicated runtime product may provide deeper application-level controls. |
| Pricing | Explorer has a no-upfront-cost offer; enterprise pricing is sales-led. | Another vendor may provide simpler scope or more visible packaging. |
Common comparison candidates include Protect AI, HiddenLayer, Lakera and CalypsoAI. Their current prices and packaging are not established here, so obtain current quotes and test each against the same workloads.
A practical buyer’s sequence
- Use Explorer Edition to red-team representative models and applications.
- Request an AI Defense demonstration covering discovery, runtime controls, access policies and supply-chain workflows.
- Run a proof of concept across prompt injection, data leakage, tool misuse, privilege escalation, encrypted traffic, multi-cloud deployment and MCP-connected agents.
- Require a bill of materials, license boundaries, deployment diagram, support matrix and data-residency terms.
- Compare the measured operational cost and coverage with specialist products before committing to platform consolidation.
The bottom line
Cisco’s acquisition of Robust Intelligence matters because it moved AI security from a specialist startup into a major network-and-security platform. The company announced the deal on August 26, 2024 and said it closed on September 24; today, the practical successor is Cisco AI Defense, with Foundation AI extending the acquired team’s work into Cisco products. Explorer Edition offers a low-friction way to test AI systems, while broader visibility and runtime protection require an enterprise evaluation.
The acquisition is a reason to investigate Cisco, not a substitute for evidence. The decisive test is whether AI Defense protects your actual clouds, models, agents and tools with acceptable latency, false-positive rates, complexity and cost.
