Use the Manitoba Hydro app to check whether a bill is based on an actual, estimated or customer meter reading, submit a reading when the option is available, and compare usage. For current Manitoba energy-efficiency rebates, start with Efficiency Manitoba: the former Power Smart brand has ended in Manitoba.
How to check a Manitoba Hydro bill in the app
- Open the official Manitoba Hydro app and sign in.
- Check the meter-reading type. Look at whether the bill identifies the reading as actual, estimated or customer. Manitoba Hydro says an estimated reading is based on past use; a later actual reading can result in a catch-up bill.
- Submit a current meter reading when the option is available. Manitoba Hydro advises customers to submit regular readings online or through its app to help avoid surprise bills.
- Check the billing dates and number of days. A period longer than 30 days can make the total look unusually high compared with a typical month.
- Compare usage history. The app listing confirms access to bills, monthly-use comparisons and notifications. Compare the current period with the same period last year where available.
- Contact Manitoba Hydro account support if the figures still do not make sense. Check the reading type, billing-period length and usage before concluding that a high bill is an overcharge.
A bill based on an estimate is not necessarily an error: it may be followed by an adjustment once an actual reading is recorded. Regular readings can help make bills reflect current use sooner.
Payment plans can smooth bills, but do not save energy
| Option | How it works | What it does—and does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Equal Payment Plan | Manitoba Hydro estimates annual costs from past energy use. The plan starts in September, is reviewed in April and balances in August; the amount may be rebalanced after the April review. | Spreads payments to make bills more predictable. It does not reduce the energy used or the underlying cost of that use. |
| Pre-authorized Payment Plan | For customers with accounts in good standing, Manitoba Hydro withdraws the billed amount on its due date. | Helps prevent a missed payment. It does not lower the bill or reduce energy consumption. |
Where to apply for current Manitoba energy rebates
Power Smart is legacy branding for Manitoba rebates. Efficiency Manitoba now manages energy-efficiency rebates and incentive programs; Manitoba Hydro continues to offer specified financing and loan programs. Use the Manitoba Hydro app for billing and usage tasks, and Efficiency Manitoba for current subsidy applications. Eligibility, costs and offer rules differ, so check the live program terms before committing to work or equipment.
Income-qualified households: Energy Efficiency Assistance Program

Choose the right next step
- The bill seems unusually high: check the meter-reading type, billed days and usage history in the Manitoba Hydro app, then submit a reading if available.
- You need more predictable payments: compare Manitoba Hydro’s Equal Payment Plan with pre-authorized payment, keeping in mind that neither reduces energy use.
- You need help paying for upgrades: check the income-qualified Energy Efficiency Assistance Program first if it may apply; otherwise review the homeowner application options on Efficiency Manitoba’s current program pages.
