OpenAI said on February 27, 2026, that ChatGPT had more than 900 million weekly active users. The company also reported more than 50 million consumer subscribers and more than 9 million paying business users. Compared with the approximately 200 million weekly users reported 18 months earlier, the arithmetic supports a 350% increase. The figures are extraordinary, but they remain company-reported rather than independently audited.
What OpenAI actually announced
OpenAI’s February 27 announcement put ChatGPT above 900 million weekly active users (WAUs). It reported three separate populations:
| Metric | Reported figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly active users | More than 900 million | People or accounts active during a seven-day period |
| Consumer subscribers | More than 50 million | Paying individual users |
| Paying business users | More than 9 million | Users whose access is paid for by businesses |
OpenAI said January and February 2026 were on track to become its largest months for new subscribers. That is a status or forecast statement, not a final audited result. The announcement linked demand to consumer, developer, business and government use, including learning, writing, planning and building.
How the 350% growth calculation works
9to5Mac reported that ChatGPT had reached approximately 200 million weekly users about 18 months earlier, in coverage of the announcement: 9to5Mac’s report. Using those two reported figures:
#1 Best Overall
- Starting base: approximately 200 million WAUs.
- Ending base: more than 900 million WAUs.
- Approximate increase: 900 million − 200 million = 700 million users.
- Percentage increase: 700 million ÷ 200 million = 350%.
The ending audience is therefore about 4.5 times the earlier base, or 450% of its former size. Saying it “grew by 450%” would be incorrect because 450% describes the ending level relative to the starting level, not the increase. At 900 million, ChatGPT is at least 90% of one billion; that makes “nearing one billion” reasonable, but it is not a promise that the threshold will be reached by a particular date.
What “weekly active user” does and does not mean
A WAU count generally includes a user active at least once in a seven-day measurement window. It does not mean 900 million people use ChatGPT every day, are online at the same time, or have the same level of engagement.
- One person opening ChatGPT once can count differently from a heavy daily user.
- An account, seat and unique human are not automatically interchangeable.
- The figure does not establish geographic distribution, bot filtering, account sharing or deduplication rules.
- It does not show how many users are free, paying, institutional or reached through an integration.
- “More than 900 million” is a floor, not an exact disclosed count.
OpenAI’s announcement establishes the headline metric but does not publish a detailed methodology or an independent audit. The precise measurement window and treatment of duplicate or shared accounts are therefore unknown publicly.
Why subscribers and business users are a separate story
The 50 million consumer-subscriber figure cannot be treated as an official conversion rate from the 900 million WAUs. The populations may use different definitions, plan categories and reference periods. A simple division produces roughly 5.6% (50 million divided by 900 million), but that is only an approximate ratio, not a disclosed conversion rate.
Business users are also not the same as business customers. One company can purchase many seats, and the reported nine million figure does not reveal the number of organizations, contract values or usage intensity.
OpenAI says enterprise revenue already represents more than 40% of revenue and could approach parity with consumer revenue by the end of 2026 in its enterprise update. That forward-looking statement suggests the commercial model is becoming broader than consumer subscriptions, but it does not disclose audited segment accounts.
How independently verifiable is the 900-million number?
- More than 900 million WAUs.
- More than 50 million consumer subscribers.
- More than 9 million paying business users.
Reported historical context
- Approximately 200 million WAUs about 18 months earlier, as reported by 9to5Mac.
- The 350% increase, which follows from that baseline and OpenAI’s current figure.
Not established by the available sources
- An external audit of the exact user count.
- A full methodology for unique-user deduplication, bots, geography or account sharing.
- A like-for-like market-share comparison with rival AI products.
OpenAI is private and does not make the routine, standardized user disclosures expected of a listed social-media company. The number may be accurate, but it should be written as “OpenAI said” rather than as an independently verified fact.
What may have driven the expansion
OpenAI attributes demand to people using ChatGPT to learn, write, plan and build, while emphasizing improvements in speed, reliability, safety and consistency. Plausible contributors include:

- Broad free and paid availability across web and mobile apps.
- Multimodal features such as image, audio, voice and file analysis.
- Use in coding, education, research, planning and everyday writing.
- Workplace familiarity that makes employee adoption easier.
- Distribution through integrations, partnerships and developer products.
- General normalization of generative AI.
These are company explanations or reasonable interpretations, not a published causal decomposition. The announcement does not quantify how much growth came from any particular feature, partner or channel.
How the milestone fits competition
OpenAI later claimed that ChatGPT had six times the monthly web visits and mobile sessions of the next-largest AI app and four times the total AI time spent: OpenAI’s comparison. Those are also OpenAI claims, and the underlying methodology is not established here.
Readers may compare ChatGPT with Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Meta AI or open-source model interfaces. A valid comparison requires matching the metric and period: weekly active users should not be compared with a rival’s monthly users, app downloads, registered accounts, web traffic or enterprise seats. No comparable rival figures are established in the available material.
What 900 million users means for OpenAI’s economics
Infrastructure and capital
Serving hundreds of millions of weekly users requires large inference capacity, data-center access, model-serving reliability and distribution. On February 27, OpenAI announced $110 billion of investment at a $730 billion pre-money valuation, describing capital, compute and distribution as necessary to meet demand. Those financing figures provide business context; they do not validate the user count.
Conversion and monetization
The strategic challenge is turning broad free usage into sustainable revenue without making the product inaccessible. Possible revenue sources include individual subscriptions, business contracts, advertising and API usage. A ChatGPT subscription is separate from API billing.
OpenAI’s listed consumer signals (checked against the cited pages) include:
| Plan or service | Published signal | Typical fit |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Free access; ads may be tested for Free and Go users in the United States | Occasional users evaluating ChatGPT |
| Go | $8 per month in the United States, according to the January 16, 2026 announcement | Users wanting more access than Free without Plus pricing |
| Plus | $20 per month, billed monthly | Individuals needing expanded tools and limits |
| Pro | OpenAI materials list $100 and $200 monthly options | High-intensity individual use |
| Business | $20 per user monthly with annual billing or $25 monthly | Teams needing administration and business controls |
| Enterprise | Custom pricing | Organizations needing negotiated controls and support |

Scale can support faster responses, better availability at peak times, more model investment and a wider range of integrations. It can also create trade-offs:

- Free users may face rate limits or changing access during demand spikes.
- Advertising experiments can make paid, ad-free access more attractive.
- Mass-market product decisions may not prioritize specialist workflows.
- Greater centralization raises privacy and data-governance questions.
- Users may become dependent on one provider’s pricing, policies and uptime.
OpenAI says Plus includes priority access, faster responses, advanced reasoning, file analysis, voice, image generation, deep research where available and custom GPT features, while warning that usage limits can still apply: Plus details. A paid plan is most defensible for someone who uses those capabilities regularly; occasional users may not recover the monthly cost.
What it means for businesses
A huge consumer audience can lower the training and adoption barrier for workplace users, because employees may already understand the interface. Business buyers still need to evaluate administration, identity controls, data handling, connectors, retention, security, support and contractual terms. Popularity is not proof that a deployment is suitable for sensitive or regulated work.
Business is also a different unit of analysis from consumers: nine million paying business users could represent many seats across a smaller number of organizations. Buyers should request usage, security and service commitments rather than infer them from the WAU headline.
How to read the “near one billion” claim
The defensible conclusion is narrower than a forecast. ChatGPT has reached extraordinary reported scale, and the 350% arithmetic is consistent with the cited 200-million baseline. But growth rates can slow as a base expands, the exact WAU count is undisclosed, and no source here guarantees that ChatGPT will pass one billion by a specific date. The February 27, 2026 announcement remains the latest directly located official user-count statement as of August 18, 2026.
