ChatGPT Can Now Virtually Try On Clothes for You

ChatGPT can generate a preview of you wearing eligible clothes or accessories, but it is not a sizing tool. Here’s how to use Try on, manage your reference photo and shop safely.

Yes. As of October 1, 2026, ChatGPT can generate a preview of you wearing eligible clothing or accessories. Select Try on on a supported product listing, then take or upload a selfie. You can also upload an item image in a chat and ask ChatGPT to show how it might look on you.

The result is a style preview—not a measuring tool or a guarantee that the garment will fit, look exactly as shown, or match the product perfectly.

How ChatGPT’s virtual try-on works

  1. Open an eligible product listing. Look for the Try on button on a clothing or accessory result in ChatGPT.
  2. Provide a reference photo. Take a selfie or upload an existing image when prompted.
  3. Review the generated image. ChatGPT Images creates a visual approximation of how the item could look on you.

There is a second route: upload a photo of clothing or an accessory in any conversation and ask ChatGPT to visualize how it might look on you. This can help when you already have an item image but do not see a Try on button.

OpenAI describes the feature as available on mobile and the web. Access, eligible listings and rollout details can vary; the reviewed documentation does not provide a country-by-country availability table.

What the preview can—and cannot—tell you

Useful for a style impression

  • Seeing a rough impression of color, silhouette and overall styling on your photo.
  • Comparing several items before deciding which product pages deserve closer attention.
  • Exploring an accessory or garment from an uploaded image, even when you are not starting from a ChatGPT product listing.

Not a fit or size prediction

OpenAI’s shopping guidance says try-on images may not represent the product or your appearance exactly and do not guarantee fit or size. The system is not documented as measuring your body, predicting a correct size, reproducing fabric behavior accurately or reducing returns. OpenAI has not published an accuracy rate or a statistic showing fewer returns or more successful purchases.

Lighting, pose, image quality, garment construction and the generated rendering can all affect the result. Treat it as a visual aid, not evidence that a specific size will fit.

How to make a purchase decision safely

  1. Use the preview only for appearance. Decide whether the color and general shape appeal to you.
  2. Open the merchant’s product details. Check the listed measurements, materials, cut and care information.
  3. Compare measurements with your own needs. Use the merchant’s size chart and, where available, garment dimensions rather than relying on the generated image.
  4. Read the return policy before paying. Check deadlines, exclusions, return shipping and whether sale or personalized items are returnable.
  5. Confirm the final checkout terms. Some eligible products or merchants may offer Instant Checkout, but the documentation does not say that every try-on listing supports it.

This process matters because a convincing image does not change the merchant’s sizing, fabric stretch or return rules.

Managing the selfie used for try-ons

OpenAI says the reference photo can be saved for future try-ons. To manage it, go to Settings → Personalization → Reference photos, where you can change or delete the saved image. The reviewed documentation does not establish an exact retention period or every account-level control, so check the settings shown in your own account.

Use a photo you are comfortable storing as a reference, and remove it from that settings area when you no longer want it reused.

How shopping results are selected

OpenAI says product results are selected independently by ChatGPT, are not ads and are not influenced by OpenAI partnerships. That does not mean every result is available for try-on or that every merchant supports Instant Checkout.

OpenAI’s March 24, 2026 product-discovery announcement says shoppers can browse visually, upload images for inspiration and refine results conversationally. It also says Shopify Catalog product data is integrated so products can appear more accurately and completely in relevant conversations. These statements describe discovery and catalog data; they are not a guarantee of fit, stock, price or delivery.

TechCrunch reported on October 1, 2026 that OpenAI announced a global launch and that the experience uses ChatGPT Images 2.5. Those are press-reporting details; OpenAI’s release notes reviewed for this feature specify mobile and web but do not publish a country-by-country rollout table. Claims about more natural lighting, richer textures or improved editing should be understood as product claims, not independent fit testing.

What the feature means for your budget

Virtual try-on may help you narrow a shortlist before spending money, but it does not justify skipping the checks that prevent an expensive mistake. A lower-priced item with restrictive returns can be riskier than a higher-priced one with clear measurements and free returns. Include possible return shipping, restocking fees and taxes in your comparison.

Do not assume that a Try on listing is sponsored or that it has a better deal. Compare the merchant’s current price and terms at checkout.

Bottom line

ChatGPT can now show a generated approximation of you wearing clothing or accessories. Use it to judge visual style, then verify measurements, product details and return terms on the merchant’s page. The image cannot confirm size or fit, and no published accuracy or return-reduction statistic supports treating it as more than a preview.
