Re:

ChatGPT Ads Are No Longer Just Beta Code: What Users Need to Know

OpenAI’s 2025 beta-code leak pointed to ChatGPT ads. Here is what happened next, who sees them, how privacy and targeting work, and how to avoid them.

OpenAI’s December 2025 beta-code leak was an early warning, not proof that advertising had launched. That changed in 2026: OpenAI announced a U.S. test on January 16, began showing ads to eligible users on February 9, and later opened more advertising infrastructure to businesses. The current question is no longer whether OpenAI is preparing ads, but how the system works, who sees it, and what users trade for an ad-free experience.

What the original beta code showed

On December 1, 2025, Futurism reported that engineer Tibor Blaho had found advertising-related strings in an experimental Android ChatGPT build, version 1.2025.329. The labels included “feature ads,” “search ad,” “search ads carousel,” and “bazaar content.”

Multiple references in one unreleased build were meaningful evidence that OpenAI was developing advertising infrastructure. They were not, however, a product specification. Beta code can represent an A/B test, an internal tool, a placeholder imported from another product, or a feature that is later abandoned. The report did not establish a launch date, countries, final ad format, or whether every user would see ads.

How OpenAI’s position changed

OpenAI executives had previously described advertising as unattractive or a last resort, while later comments left open the possibility of testing it. On January 16, 2026, OpenAI made the direction public, saying it would test ads in the United States for logged-in adults on the Free and Go tiers. It said sponsored products or services would appear below an answer when relevant to the conversation, while Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans would remain ad-free. The announcement is documented in OpenAI’s advertising approach.

There is no evidence that the beta-code report caused the policy change. The defensible timeline is simply that an early leak pointed to work already under way, followed by an official test.

When ads began and who can see them

OpenAI’s Help Center says the U.S. test began on February 9, 2026. Eligibility is narrower than the phrase “ChatGPT users” suggests.

Account or situation Documented ad treatment
Free Ads may appear in eligible regions and tests.
Go Ads may appear. OpenAI’s January announcement listed the U.S. price as $8 per month at that time.
Plus and Pro Ad-free, according to OpenAI.
Business, Enterprise and Edu Ad-free, according to OpenAI.
Accounts identified as belonging to, or likely belonging to, people under 18 Excluded from the test, according to OpenAI.
Temporary Chat No ads under the current Help Center documentation.

Availability can also depend on country, login status, platform, and whether an account is included in the rollout. OpenAI says ads are not currently placed in the ChatGPT Atlas browser during the test, a product-specific exception that can change.

Where ads appear

OpenAI says an ad appears below the end of a ChatGPT response, not inside the model-generated text. The unit can contain an advertiser name, logo or favicon, headline, description, landing page and image. It is labeled and visually separated from the answer. OpenAI’s descriptions are available in Ads in ChatGPT and Ads in ChatGPT: The Basics.

The design points toward sponsored products and services shown while people explore options, compare alternatives or make decisions. The early “search ad,” “search ads carousel” and “bazaar content” strings fit that direction, but they do not prove that the final production card is identical to the leaked concepts.

Do ads change ChatGPT’s answers?

OpenAI says advertising systems run separately from the chat model. It says advertisers cannot pay to shape, rank or alter an answer, and that a paid placement is not an endorsement by OpenAI.

That is a statement about direct influence. A separate governance question is whether advertising revenue could eventually affect which commercial tasks, recommendation surfaces or product priorities OpenAI emphasizes. The available documentation does not demonstrate such an effect, so it should be treated as an unresolved incentive question rather than a proven failure.

What advertisers receive—and what OpenAI may use internally

OpenAI says advertisers do not receive users’ chats, chat history, memories, names, email addresses, precise location, IP addresses or sensitive subjects such as health, mental-health or political information. It says advertisers receive aggregated, non-identifying performance information, such as views and clicks.

That does not mean conversation context is irrelevant to ad selection. OpenAI says it may use the current conversation, general location or language, and ad interactions to select an ad. If personalized ads are enabled, selected information from past chats and memory may also be used inside ChatGPT. OpenAI says those signals are not sent to advertisers.

This distinction matters: turning off ad personalization limits signals used for relevance, but it does not necessarily remove the ad unit. Users can also clear advertising data, dismiss an ad or report it through the available controls. Sharing a specific ad with ChatGPT for help can make information about that ad available in that interaction.

How to avoid or reduce ads

Choose Ads-Free Free

OpenAI documents an ads-free option for some Free users. The trade-off is lower message limits and reduced access to features; the Help Center says tools such as image generation or deep research may be unavailable. Menu wording and eligibility can vary, but the documented route is Settings → Ads controls → Change plan to go ad-free.

Use an ad-free paid plan

Plus and Pro are ad-free according to OpenAI, as are Business, Enterprise and Edu. A subscription may also provide higher limits or broader features, but paying solely to avoid occasional sponsored cards can be poor value for a light user.

Use Temporary Chat for a session

Temporary Chats do not show ads under the current documentation. They are useful when you do not want a session’s content or memory used for ad relevance, but readers should confirm that the control appears in their current app or web version.

Turn off personalization

Disabling ad personalization can reduce use of past chats and memory for ad selection. It is not an ad blocker: ads may still be selected using the current conversation and other permitted signals.

Why OpenAI is testing advertising

OpenAI says advertising can help expand access while supporting the infrastructure required to run more usage for Free and Go users. Inference and data-center costs are substantial, and subscriptions do not directly monetize people who never pay. Ads provide another revenue source without requiring every user to upgrade.

The trade-off is familiar from other ad-supported services: users pay with attention and potentially with additional internal personalization, while the company funds broader access. The important difference here is that a sponsored card sits beside an answer that users may regard as advice, making labeling and trust especially important.

What businesses can buy

OpenAI’s advertiser materials describe campaigns, ad groups, creative, budgets, goals, bulk CSV uploads and measurement through partners or a beta self-serve Ads Manager. On May 5, 2026, OpenAI announced new buying methods and CPC bidding in its advertising update. The OpenAI Ads site is the advertiser entry point.

OpenAI’s advertiser help material says the system supports CPC and CPM buying. It describes a relevance-weighted, second-price auction, with maximum bids set at the ad-group level. No stable public rate card, minimum budget, conversion benchmark or guaranteed inventory figure is established in the available material, so businesses should treat the channel as evolving and measure it cautiously rather than assume search-ad economics will transfer directly.

What this means for users making purchasing decisions

  • Look for the sponsored label before treating a product card as a recommendation.
  • Do not interpret placement as proof that OpenAI endorses the advertiser.
  • Remember that “not shared with advertisers” is different from “not used internally for relevance.”
  • For sensitive shopping or personal questions, consider Temporary Chat or an ads-free configuration.
  • Compare the cost of a paid plan with the value of its limits and features, not just the presence of ads.

What the leak got right—and what it did not

The December 2025 report correctly identified the direction: OpenAI was building ad-related capabilities. It did not prove that ads had launched, that they would appear inside answers, that every Free user would see them, or that OpenAI would share chat histories with advertisers.

By August 2026, the accurate description is more specific. OpenAI has tested ads in the United States, primarily for Free and Go users; places sponsored units separately below responses; offers ad-free alternatives; and is building an advertiser marketplace. The rollout remains dependent on plan, geography, age status, product and test eligibility.

The Bottom Line

The beta-code leak was directionally correct, but “preparing to” is now outdated. ChatGPT ads are a real, limited and expanding product test—not ads inserted into the model’s answers—and users can choose between accepting sponsored placements, using an ads-free Free option with lower limits, or paying for an ad-free plan.
