Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard is the company’s largest disclosed deal by announced transaction value. Microsoft announced the all-cash purchase at $95 per share, or $68.7 billion including Activision Blizzard’s net cash, on January 18, 2022. The transaction closed on October 13, 2023, and Microsoft later reported a $75.4 billion purchase price under acquisition accounting. That distinction matters when comparing it with earlier deals.

The table reproduces the January 2022 chart’s headline-value method. Dollar figures are nominal amounts at announcement, not inflation-adjusted totals. Undisclosed-price transactions listed in Microsoft’s acquisition history are excluded.

Why Activision Blizzard was such an outlier
The announced $68.7 billion value was approximately 2.62 times LinkedIn’s $26.2 billion price. The five preceding large deals in the historical chart—LinkedIn, Nuance, Skype, ZeniMax and GitHub—total about $69.2 billion using their rounded announced figures. In other words, Activision Blizzard was roughly equal to that entire group.

- Beneath the cool, tough exterior is a system capable of powering the very best single and multiplayer gaming experiences available today
- Designed to push gaming to the absolute limit, the Xbox console delivers incredible graphics and cinematic sound
Microsoft’s January 2022 announcement described a $95-per-share, all-cash transaction intended to expand gaming across console, PC, mobile and cloud. The assets included Activision, Blizzard and King franchises such as Call of Duty, Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch and Candy Crush. Microsoft also presented the deal as a way to strengthen Game Pass and provide building blocks for its then-forward-looking metaverse strategy; that rationale was a company projection, not a measured outcome. See the original Microsoft announcement.
The deal was announced while regulators were reviewing it and was completed on October 13, 2023. Microsoft’s completion announcement welcomed Activision Blizzard King’s teams into Xbox. The closing status means the $68.7 billion figure should no longer be described as a pending proposal.
The next-largest acquisitions
LinkedIn: professional distribution
Microsoft announced LinkedIn at approximately $26.2 billion in 2016. The professional network gave Microsoft a large audience and data-rich distribution channel that could complement Office and other enterprise services. It is a whole-company acquisition and the second-largest disclosed deal in the chart.

Nuance: healthcare and enterprise AI
Nuance supplied speech, clinical-documentation and artificial-intelligence capabilities, especially in healthcare and enterprise applications. Contemporary coverage used an announced value of about $19.7 billion. Microsoft’s later annual report records an $18.8 billion accounting purchase price, illustrating why announcement figures and post-closing accounting totals should not be mixed.

Skype: communications infrastructure
Microsoft paid $8.5 billion for Skype in 2011. At announcement, Microsoft said Skype could strengthen real-time voice and video across Xbox, Windows, Lync, Outlook and Xbox Live. The acquisition shows an earlier communications focus; Microsoft subsequently centered workplace collaboration on Teams. Details of the purchase and intended integrations appear in Microsoft’s Skype announcement.
ZeniMax Media/Bethesda: first-party content
Microsoft acquired ZeniMax Media, the parent associated with Bethesda Softworks, for approximately $7.5 billion in 2020. The transaction added studios and franchises including Doom, Fallout, The Elder Scrolls and Wolfenstein. It expanded Xbox’s first-party pipeline before the much larger Activision Blizzard transaction. It is more precise to call this a ZeniMax Media acquisition than simply a “Bethesda acquisition.”

GitHub: the developer ecosystem
GitHub was purchased for $7.5 billion in Microsoft stock in 2018. Because the consideration was shares rather than cash, the nominal announced value reflected Microsoft’s share price and could differ between announcement and closing. The deal placed a major code-hosting and collaboration platform inside Microsoft’s developer strategy.
Older and specialized transactions
Nokia devices and services
Microsoft paid about $7.2 billion for Nokia’s devices-and-services business in 2013. This was a business-unit purchase, not a takeover of Nokia Corporation. It represented an attempt to control mobile hardware and related assets, a strategy with a different outcome from Microsoft’s later emphasis on cloud software, enterprise services and gaming.

aQuantive: an advertising bet
The approximately $6.3 billion aQuantive purchase expanded Microsoft’s digital-advertising ambitions. Microsoft later recognized a major impairment related to the acquisition. Purchase-price rankings therefore should not be read as rankings of enduring financial success.

“Deal value” can mean several different things. The historical chart uses announced headline transaction values, while financial statements use acquisition-accounting measures. Those measures can reflect cash paid, stock consideration, assumed liabilities, acquired cash, debt and purchase-accounting adjustments.
- Activision Blizzard: Microsoft announced $68.7 billion including Activision Blizzard’s net cash; its later annual report records a $75.4 billion total purchase price.
- Nuance: the announced figure was about $19.7 billion; Microsoft later reported an $18.8 billion accounting purchase price.
- GitHub: the $7.5 billion headline was stock consideration, so share-price movements matter when comparing announcement and closing values.
These are different measurements, not necessarily contradictory claims. A consistent chart should use one definition throughout and explain any later accounting figure separately. Microsoft’s 2024 annual report provides the accounting figures.
What this list says about Microsoft’s strategy
The sequence moves from communications, advertising, devices and consumer software toward enterprise distribution, developers, artificial intelligence and gaming. LinkedIn added professional reach; GitHub strengthened relationships with developers; Nuance brought healthcare-focused AI; ZeniMax and Activision Blizzard supplied owned game content at increasing scale.
The list also demonstrates why price alone is an incomplete scorecard. A gaming publisher, professional network, healthcare-AI company, communications service, developer platform and handset business generate value in different ways. Activision Blizzard is the largest disclosed bet by announced value, but the table is a history of strategic choices—not a league table of business outcomes.
Quick Recap
Methodology and scope
- Values are nominal U.S. dollars stated at announcement unless a later accounting figure is explicitly identified.
- The ranking uses announced headline transaction value, not enterprise value, inflation-adjusted value, final cash consideration or asset-only value.
- Undisclosed-price acquisitions are omitted; Microsoft’s current acquisition-history list includes many such transactions.
- Business-unit purchases, such as Nokia’s devices-and-services transaction, are labeled as such rather than presented as whole-company takeovers.
- Activision Blizzard’s $68.7 billion and $75.4 billion figures should not be combined: the first is the public announcement value, while the second is Microsoft’s later accounting purchase price.
