On Monday, September 30, 2024, a Yahoo Finance roundup reported CD offers of up to 5.10% APY, based on rates checked at 8 a.m. ET. That was the roundup’s highest listed offer—not a national average, and not a rate guarantee for today. The figures below are a historical snapshot, not current offers.

What were the highest CD rates on September 30, 2024?

Yahoo Finance reported offers up to 5.10% APY, including offers from Barclays and BMO Alto, in its roundup checked at 8 a.m. ET on September 30, 2024. The roundup was a selection of offers, not a comprehensive survey or official market average. Rates and account terms can change, so the figure should be read only as a dated high offer. See Yahoo Finance’s September 30, 2024 rate roundup.

How did those offers compare with national CD averages?

The FDIC’s September 2024 national-rate table, revised September 16, reported average APYs by term. These are national averages, not the best individual offers; they answer a different question from a roundup of high-yield accounts.

CD term FDIC national average APY
3 months 1.55%
6 months 1.81%
12 months 1.88%
24 months 1.55%
36 months 1.43%
48 months 1.35%
60 months 1.42%

Each figure is the FDIC’s national average APY for the stated term in its September 2024 table, revised September 16, 2024. View the FDIC national-rate table.

What was happening to interest rates?

On September 18, 2024, the Federal Open Market Committee lowered its federal funds target range by half a percentage point, to 4.75%–5.00%. The Committee said it acted “in light of the progress on inflation and the balance of risks.” It also said: “The Committee has gained greater confidence that inflation is moving sustainably toward its 2 percent objective, and judges that the risks to achieving its employment and inflation goals are roughly in balance.” Read the FOMC’s September 18, 2024 statement.

The policy move is relevant context, but it does not set every bank’s CD rate mechanically. The FOMC statement and the dated offer roundup do not establish how much any particular institution changed its rates in response.

How to compare CD offers

A certificate of deposit is a time-bound deposit account with a stated term and generally fixed return. Withdrawing money before maturity can trigger an early-withdrawal penalty; the amount and rules depend on the account contract. Compare the full terms, not just the headline APY:

  • Term and maturity: Check how long the money is committed and when the CD matures.
  • APY: Compare the annual percentage yield for the same or similar term. A top rate on a different term may not suit your cash needs.
  • Minimum deposit: Confirm the amount required to open the account.
  • Early-withdrawal penalty: Read the contract to understand whether you can access funds early and what that would cost.
  • Institution and eligibility: Confirm whether the offer is from a bank or credit union and whether you meet its account requirements.
  • Insurance coverage: Verify the institution and applicable deposit insurance directly in its disclosures; do not assume coverage from a rate listing alone.
  • Maturity and renewal: Check what happens when the term ends, including any renewal or rollover conditions.

The 5.10% APY reported in the September 30 roundup is a historical comparison point only. Before opening any CD, verify the current rate and every account condition with the institution.
