But the available evidence does not confirm those offers were available on November 20 itself, or establish a complete rate list for that date. Treat the figures below as dated historical reports, not current offers.
What the dated reports show
| Report date | Institution and CD term | Reported rate | What the date establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| November 19, 2024 | Newtek Bank, six months | 5.25% APY | A GOBankingRates article syndicated by AOL reported this rate on November 19. It does not confirm availability on November 20. Read the report. |
| November 21, 2024 | Langley Federal Credit Union, ten months | Up to 5.25% APY | An AOL Finance roundup reported this rate on November 21. “Up to” reflects the wording of that report; it does not confirm availability on November 20. Read the report. |
These adjacent-date examples show that 5% or higher was being reported around that week. They are not proof that either offer remained available on November 20. The exact issuer list and rates for that day are not established by the available dated material.
Other November 2024 rate context
BankStar’s November 18 rate sheet
BankStar published an institution-specific rate sheet effective November 18, 2024, showing a 4.20% rate. That sheet describes BankStar’s listed terms, not a national ranking, and its rate should not be shifted to November 20. View the BankStar rate sheet.
Five-year CD rates
My Money Blog’s November 2024 survey reported that some five-year CD rates remained above 4%, but it does not provide a specific November 20 observation. Read the survey.

#1 Best Overall
For broader year-level context, RateBrain reported a 3.20% median five-year CD rate across 49 products tracked in 2024, with a high of 5.27% APY from TAB Bank in its five-year category. Those annual figures are not a November 20 quote or a universal market average. See RateBrain’s CD-rate data.
How to compare a historical CD offer
APY alone is not enough to establish which CD was the better fit. A useful comparison needs the rate’s effective date and the account conditions that applied to it:
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
- Term: Compare CDs with similar durations; a six-month offer and a ten-month offer do not lock up money for the same period.
- Minimum opening deposit: Check the issuer’s requirement rather than assuming it from the APY.
- Early-withdrawal penalty: Find out what interest or principal could be forfeited if you need the money before maturity.
- Eligibility: Confirm any membership or other account-opening requirements, especially for a credit union.
- Rate date: Use the date on the issuer’s disclosure or the report, and do not treat a nearby date as confirmation.
The cited reports and rate sheet do not establish a complete, comparable set of minimums, penalties, eligibility rules, and effective dates for all named offers on November 20. Without those details, they cannot support a definitive best-CD ranking for that day.

All rates discussed here are historical reports from November 2024. They do not establish what any institution offers today. Anyone considering a CD should check the institution’s current disclosure for its APY, term, minimum deposit, withdrawal rules, and eligibility conditions before opening an account.
