Caterpillar says it intends to invest approximately $1 billion in North Carolina, including a new Sanford manufacturing facility planned to increase production of compact track loaders and telehandlers. The announcement, made September 30, 2026, does not specify how many new jobs the facility will create or when construction and production will begin.
What is Caterpillar building in Sanford?
The company plans a new, modern manufacturing facility in Sanford for its Cat Compact business. Caterpillar says the facility is intended to increase production of compact track loaders and telehandlers in response to demand. It also says the planned operation will use advanced manufacturing technologies, automation, digital production systems and integrated logistics; those are elements of the announced plan, not confirmed completed features. Why North Carolina?
Caterpillar said it chose North Carolina because of its longstanding presence in the state, the strength of the local workforce, and the opportunity to build on manufacturing expertise and existing Sanford operations. Construction Industries Group President Rod Shurman thanked the State of North Carolina, Lee County and the City of Sanford for their partnership and support.
How much is Caterpillar investing?
The approximately $1 billion figure is Caterpillar’s intended investment across North Carolina, announced September 30, 2026. It is not a report of money already spent, and the announcement does not break out how much of the total is allocated specifically to the Sanford facility.

How many jobs will the expansion create?
Caterpillar’s announcement does not give a firm new-job count, facility size, construction schedule or completion date. North Carolina Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley welcomed the investment and pointed to apprenticeship opportunities as a way to prepare workers for the future, but the statement does not quantify apprenticeship places or hiring commitments. North Carolina Department of Commerce statement
WRAL reported that local incentives were intended to retain Caterpillar and 2,000 jobs in Lee County. That figure refers to jobs the incentives reportedly sought to retain; it is not a disclosed number of new jobs from the Sanford expansion. WRAL’s September 30 report

What incentives were reported?
WRAL reported that local officials had approved tax breaks described in its headline as $85 million less than two weeks before Caterpillar’s announcement. The outlet also cited a Commerce Department spokesperson for $2.6 million from the state Industrial Development Fund’s Utility Account and $500,000 from the state Department of Transportation’s Rail Division. These are reported public-support figures, separate from Caterpillar’s intended investment; the cited report does not establish here the full package terms, payout timing or final amounts.
That distinction matters when assessing the announcement: the company’s approximately $1 billion figure is a planned private investment, while the incentive figures are reported public commitments associated with retaining the company and existing jobs. Neither should be treated as a measure of the other. NC Business Desk’s project report

What state officials said
Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley said Caterpillar’s investment was “putting down even deeper roots in Sanford” and described it as a reflection of North Carolina’s manufacturing, innovation and opportunity. He also praised the company’s role in Lee County and highlighted apprenticeship pathways.
The available statement substantiates a positive response from the state Commerce secretary. It does not establish that Sanford or Lee County elected officials issued the praise suggested by the phrase “local leaders hail.”
