Caterpillar plans to invest approximately $1 billion in North Carolina to expand manufacturing capacity for its Cat Compact business. Announced on September 30, 2026, the project includes a new facility in Sanford focused on compact track loaders and telehandlers. The company has not disclosed a firm job count, construction schedule, completion date, facility size or state incentive award.
What Caterpillar announced
Caterpillar described the investment as a response to rising demand for compact equipment and part of its Cat Compact strategy. The company says the strategy is intended to make the experience more streamlined and convenient for small contractors and growing businesses. Rod Shurman, Caterpillar’s Construction Industries Group president, said the company was investing to serve the growing compact-equipment segment.
The planned Sanford facility is intended to increase production of compact track loaders and telehandlers. Caterpillar identifies construction, landscaping, agriculture and material handling as uses for this equipment.
What the planned facility may include
Caterpillar says the new manufacturing environment is expected to use advanced manufacturing technologies, automation, digital production systems and integrated logistics capabilities. These are planned features, not confirmed operating results. The company says they are intended to support safety, quality, operational performance and long-term growth.
