Catalytic converters are stolen because they contain valuable metals, can be cut from many vehicles in minutes, and are easiest to reach under high-clearance cars. A vehicle-specific shield or cage, secure and visible parking, and identification marking can reduce the opportunity—but none guarantees prevention. In the United States, theft is generally handled by optional comprehensive auto insurance, not liability-only coverage, subject to your deductible and policy terms.
Why catalytic converters are stolen
A catalytic converter sits in the exhaust system and converts some dangerous gases into less harmful emissions. Inside are small quantities of precious metals, including platinum-group metals, that can have significant scrap value.
Thieves also favor converters because removal is quick and relatively quiet compared with stealing an entire vehicle. Police.uk says a converter can be removed in less than a minute in some circumstances; the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) describes removal with a saw or wrench in a few minutes. The risk is especially attractive when a thief can work underneath a vehicle without being easily seen.
Why hybrids can be attractive targets
Hybrid vehicles are commonly targeted because their converters may contain metals that have retained greater value after years of relatively clean operation. That does not make every hybrid equally vulnerable, but it can increase a thief’s incentive.

Why SUVs, pickups, vans and buses are exposed
NICB identifies SUVs, pickup trucks, buses and vans as easier targets because their higher ground clearance gives a thief more room to slide underneath. A low passenger car may still be attacked, particularly if it is parked in an isolated area, but access is generally more difficult.
How widespread is the problem?
NICB reported more than 64,000 catalytic-converter thefts in the United States during 2022. California and Texas together accounted for more than 32,000 that year. NICB also recorded 25,394 thefts nationally from 2008 through 2015. These figures are reported thefts, not a measure of every incident, and totals vary by year and reporting practices.
Which vehicles and locations are most at risk?
- High-clearance vehicles: SUVs, trucks, vans and buses provide easier underside access.
- Some hybrids: Their converters may offer more valuable metals.
- Vehicles parked for long periods: Fleet lots, apartment areas and commuter car parks can give thieves time to work.
- Dark or poorly observed spaces: Limited lighting and little foot or vehicle traffic reduce the chance of interruption.
- Vehicles without an anti-theft device: An unprotected converter can be faster to cut out than one covered by a properly fitted guard.
Risk is not limited to one make, model or neighborhood. A thief’s decision usually combines expected resale value, how quickly the part can be removed, and whether the location provides concealment.

How to prevent catalytic-converter theft
Prevention works by making the converter harder to reach, slower to remove, more visible to observers, or easier to identify after a theft. Use several layers rather than relying on one device.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches1. Install a vehicle-specific shield, guard, lock or cage
Choose a device designed for the exact year, make, model and drivetrain. NICB recommends installing a catalytic-converter anti-theft device. A shield or cage can block cutting access; a lock or fastener system can make removal more difficult. Ask a dealer whether the manufacturer offers an approved guard or lock. In the United Kingdom, Police.uk points consumers toward guards tested to Sold Secure Gold; certification and availability differ by country.
Check whether installation requires drilling, welding or modification near sensors, heat shields or exhaust components. A qualified dealer or exhaust technician can verify clearance, heat tolerance and service access. A poorly fitted device can rattle, trap heat or interfere with later repairs.

2. Improve where and how you park
- Use a locked garage whenever practical.
- Otherwise park in a well-lit, visible area close to entrances, cameras or regular foot traffic.
- Use motion-sensor lighting where you control the property.
- For fleets, keep vehicles overnight in an enclosed, locked, alarmed and well-lit area.
3. Mark the converter
Ask local law enforcement, a dealer or a vehicle-security provider about VIN etching or another identification program. Marking will not stop a determined thief, but it can deter resale and help establish ownership if a converter is recovered. At a May 17, 2025 event reported by NICB, identification numbers were etched onto converters for more than 100 residents.
4. Use alarms and awareness appropriately
Some vehicle alarms or aftermarket systems can react to vibration, tilt or tampering. Confirm compatibility before installation and avoid modifications that disable emissions equipment or create a fire, electrical or exhaust hazard. Never use booby traps or any device intended to injure someone.

What a prevention device cannot do
No shield, lock, cage, parking choice or marking guarantees prevention. A determined thief may damage surrounding exhaust parts or choose another vulnerable component. Treat each measure as deterrence and combine physical protection with secure parking and insurance.

Does insurance cover a stolen catalytic converter?
In the United States, optional comprehensive coverage generally covers theft and other non-collision damage, including a stolen catalytic converter in many policies. You pay the comprehensive deductible, and the insurer applies its rules for parts, labor, aftermarket equipment and claim handling.
| Coverage | Typical treatment of converter theft | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Comprehensive | Usually covered as a theft or other non-collision loss | Policy wording, deductible, valuation and exclusions control |
| Collision only | Not normally covered because theft is not a collision | Confirm the actual declarations page and endorsements |
| Liability only | Does not pay to repair or replace your stolen converter | Liability protects others for covered damage you cause |
Coverage varies by insurer, state and policy. Ask specifically whether the policy covers the converter, related exhaust damage, aftermarket equipment and towing or temporary transportation. State rules and the effect of a claim on your premium or claim history also vary.
When a claim may not make financial sense
Compare the written repair estimate with your comprehensive deductible. If the total loss is close to or below the deductible, you may receive little or no payment, although reporting requirements can still apply. Consider related damage, such as cut pipes, sensors or heat shields, rather than comparing only the price of the converter.

What to do after a catalytic converter is stolen
- Document the scene. Photograph the empty converter area, cut exhaust pipes, warning lights and surrounding damage before moving parts or cleaning up.
- Protect your safety. Do not drive if fumes enter the cabin, the exhaust is hanging, or the vehicle is otherwise unsafe. Arrange a tow or professional inspection.
- File a police report. Keep the report or case number and provide photographs, vehicle details and any identification markings.
- Notify your insurer promptly. Ask what documents, estimates, photographs and inspection steps it requires. Do not authorize major work before learning whether an inspection is needed.
- Obtain a written estimate. Use a qualified exhaust shop or dealer and request an itemized estimate covering parts, labor, sensors, pipe damage and calibration if applicable.
- Compare the estimate with your deductible. Decide whether to claim after considering the complete repair cost and your policy terms.
- Keep every receipt. Save towing, temporary-transportation and repair receipts; reimbursement depends on the policy.
Is a catalytic-converter shield worth it?
It can be worthwhile when your vehicle is a known target, has high ground clearance, is parked outside or has a high replacement cost. The value depends on the device’s fit, construction, installation cost and the likelihood of theft where you park—not simply on the product’s advertised material.
| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Vehicle fit | Is it designed for the exact year, model, engine and exhaust layout? |
| Removal resistance | Does it block common cutting and wrench access, and are fasteners difficult to reach? |
| Dealer compatibility | Will it conflict with manufacturer guidance, servicing or emissions components? |
| Installation | Can it be bolted on safely, or does it require drilling or welding by a professional? |
| Heat and clearance | Does it maintain safe distance from the converter, wiring and other components? |
| Identification | Can a VIN or other ownership marking be added and documented? |
| Warranty and legality | What is covered, and are modifications permitted in your jurisdiction? |
| Total cost | How do device and labor costs compare with the converter replacement cost and insurance deductible? |
A professional installation is especially sensible when the device requires drilling or welding, access is restricted, or you are unsure how it affects heat and exhaust components. Ask the installer to document the device and its compatibility for future insurance or service questions.
Questions to ask your insurer and installer
- Is catalytic-converter theft covered under my comprehensive coverage?
- What is my comprehensive deductible?
- Are aftermarket converters, shields and other modifications covered, and how are they valued?
- Will towing, rental transportation or related exhaust damage be covered?
- Does installing an approved anti-theft device qualify for any discount?
- Will this guard fit my exact vehicle without affecting emissions, heat management or service access?
- Who will install it, and what warranty applies to the device and labor?
The Bottom Line
The most practical strategy is layered protection: use a vehicle-specific anti-theft device, park in a secure and visible place, mark the converter, and keep comprehensive coverage if the cost and deductible fit your budget. If theft occurs, document the damage, report it, notify the insurer and obtain a qualified estimate before deciding whether to claim.
