Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a one-off payment, a bank-switching offer can be the most valuable option if you qualify and the new account suits you. Cashback portals and reward apps are better suited to earning smaller amounts on purchases you already plan to make. Compare what you will actually keep—not the headline reward—after fees, required deposits or savings, eligibility rules, tracking delays and redemption limits.
Which option is best for you?
| Route | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Bank-switching offer | You are willing to change your current account and can meet the offer’s conditions. | A one-off reward may involve deposits, Direct Debits, an app login, eligibility exclusions or account fees. |
| Cashback portal | You already intend to buy from a participating retailer and can start the purchase through the portal. | Tracking and retailer confirmation can delay or prevent payout; exclusions vary by deal. |
| Bank- or card-linked reward app | You regularly shop with participating brands and are comfortable connecting an account or payment card. | Offers can be limited or personalized, and rewards may be paid as bill credit rather than cash. |
There is no reliable universal figure for how much a person can earn each year from reward apps or cashback. Your result depends on the offers you qualify for and whether they match spending you would make anyway. Do not spend more or move to an unsuitable bank just to obtain a bonus.
How to compare a bank-switching offer
Work out the likely net value before applying. Include any account charge and the practical cost of meeting conditions, such as holding money in a particular account or keeping qualifying Direct Debits active. Then check that you meet the eligibility rules and can complete every required step on time.
- Net reward: subtract account fees and account for money you must deposit or save. A required deposit is not necessarily a fee, but it can limit access to your money.
- Eligibility: check residency, account type and exclusions for current or previous customers or past switch-bonus recipients.
- Tasks and timing: note the full-switch requirement, qualifying payments, Direct Debits, app logins and payment date. Check whether conditions must still be met when the reward is paid.
- Account fit: consider service, access and ongoing features. A bonus is a one-off; account charges and whether the account works for you can matter for longer.

#1 Best Overall
| Bank and offer snapshot | Key conditions or qualification |
|---|---|
| Santander Everyday Current Account: £240 | The cited offer required a full Current Account Switch Service (CASS) switch, at least two qualifying household Direct Debits, £1,500 paid in, and at least £200 funded into a Santander Regular Saver within the stated 60-day period. Santander said payment would arrive around 90 days after the request, subject to continuing account and Direct Debit conditions. The cited deadline for switch requests was 7 October 2026. The terms excluded people who held a Santander current account on 1 January 2026 or had previously received a Santander switch incentive. |
| NatWest Select or Reward: £200 switch offer | The cited terms required a full CASS switch, £1,250 paid in within 60 days and an app login. The Reward account cost £2 per month and offered £4 monthly rewards for two or more Direct Debits of at least £2. Compare the ongoing fee with the rewards you expect to qualify for. |
| HSBC Premier: differing offer snapshots | An HSBC announcement described a £250 reward for eligible Premier applicants meeting salary or savings eligibility, including £100,000 personal salary or £100,000 in savings and investments, with prior-account exclusions. A separate current switching page showed a £500 Premier welcome bonus and said it could be withdrawn at any time. These are differing snapshots, not amounts to combine; check live terms and eligibility. |
| RBS Select or Reward: £200 in May 2026 terms | The documented terms required a qualifying UK resident to complete a full switch, pay in £1,250 and log into the app within 60 days. Previous RBS, NatWest or Ulster switch-incentive recipients were excluded. This is a comparison example, not confirmation of current availability. |
Comparison pages can capture different offers on different dates: a MoneyWeek comparison published 2 October 2026 reported incentives up to £600, while uSwitch’s page, last updated 2 July 2026, listed Santander at £240, first direct at £210 and NatWest at £200. These snapshots should not be blended into a current ranking; the bank’s live terms determine what is actually available.
What switching through CASS involves
The Current Account Switch Service says it moves payments and the balance to the new bank and closes the old account. Its guarantee covers charges or interest in the unlikely event something goes wrong, and the service says switching is free. CASS reports that more than 13 million people have switched successfully using the service. Check with your new bank whether any third-party providers that access your account need new permission or setup.
Rank #2
- Ideal for Gifting
- Ideal for a bookworm
- Compact for travelling
- Read the new bank’s current eligibility and switch-offer terms, including deadlines and exclusions.
- Apply for the account and ask the new bank to arrange a full switch through CASS if the offer requires it.
- Complete the offer’s additional steps—such as paying in money, maintaining qualifying Direct Debits or logging into the app—within the specified period.
- Keep records of the offer terms and your completed actions, and check the account for the reward when the stated payment window has passed.
When cashback portals are worthwhile
A portal typically sends you to a participating retailer and shares commission the retailer pays for the referral. TopCashback says tracked cashback may remain pending until the retailer confirms it after the returns period. Quidco describes cashback through retailer purchases, gift cards and linked in-store offers, with cash-out options including bank transfer, PayPal or gift card.
- Use a portal for a purchase you already planned, not as a reason to buy something unnecessary.
- Check the specific offer’s exclusions and tracking rules before clicking through.
- Keep in mind that a displayed or tracked amount may not yet be confirmed or withdrawable.
- Compare payout forms and choose a service whose participating retailers match your normal shopping.
When reward apps are a better fit
Bank- or card-linked apps generally return value only when you use an eligible offer or make a qualifying purchase. Virgin Money says its offers change quickly, the rate shown when purchasing applies, and pending cashback can take up to 35 days. It also says some joint-account rewards, including account-level switch offers, go to one designated holder. Airtime describes earning credit against a mobile bill from participating brands after connecting cards.
Rank #3
Look at whether the offers suit your existing shopping, how and when value can be redeemed, and what account or card information the app requests. Rewards paid as mobile-bill credit or another non-cash benefit are not equivalent to cash in your bank account.

A quick decision checklist
- Choose a bank switch if you qualify, can meet every condition, and would be content with the account beyond the bonus.
- Choose a cashback portal if you already buy from its participating retailers and are willing to wait for confirmation.
- Choose a reward app if its live offers fit your ordinary spending and its redemption method is useful to you.
- Skip an offer if its fees, required balance, spending pressure, data requests or account terms outweigh the likely value.
