Cash App Pools let one organizer collect contributions toward a shared goal, such as a group gift, trip, meal or event. You can name the pool, set a target, share one link, see who has paid and close the pool to move the collected balance to your Cash App balance.
Friends usually do not need Cash App: eligible contributors can pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay. The important exception is New York, where contributors must use a Cash App account. Pools are a collection tool—not escrow, a joint account or a shared wallet—so use them only with an organizer you know and trust.

What Cash App Pools do
A Pool groups multiple payments around one named goal instead of making the organizer send separate requests and reconcile them manually. Typical uses include:
- A cabin deposit or other group-trip cost
- A wedding, birthday or holiday gift
- A restaurant bill or event expense
- A coworker collection
- A sports league, club or shared-supplies purchase
- An informal household expense shared by several people
Cash App says pool money stays separate from the organizer’s regular Cash balance until the pool is closed and transferred. Participants can see contribution information, giving the group a visible record of progress.

Cash App announced Pools on July 29, 2025, initially for a selected group of customers. The public feature page now describes creating and contributing to pools, although availability and screen labels can still vary by account, location and app version. See Block’s launch announcement and the current Cash App Pools page.
How a Pool differs from an ordinary Cash App payment
| Ordinary payment request | Cash App Pool |
|---|---|
| Usually one request and one recipient | One named collection for multiple contributors |
| You reconcile payments yourself | The pool tracks progress and individual contributions |
| Each person may receive a separate request | The organizer shares one pool link |
| Participants generally need a payment route already supported by Cash App | Eligible non-users can contribute with Apple Pay or Google Pay |
| The organizer may have to front costs while waiting for replies | The organizer can collect toward the target before paying the expense |
How to create a Cash App Pool
Cash App’s general flow is confirmed, but the exact wording can differ between accounts and app releases.
- Open Cash App and go to the Payment tab.
- Choose the option to create or start a Pool.
- Enter a clear name that identifies the expense.
- Set the group’s target amount.
- Review the details and create the pool.
- Copy the pool link or use Cash App’s share option to invite contributors.
- Monitor the total and individual payments in the pool.
- When you are ready to use the money, close the pool and transfer its balance to your Cash App balance.
Independent coverage also places Pool creation in the Payment tab; labels may change. TechCrunch’s walkthrough summary describes the same name, target, sharing and closing sequence.

- Double check if the URL/website is genuine before entering card details online. Do not provide any gift card details (example: claim code) to someone you do not know or trust. There are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
- If you believe that your Card has been lost or stolen, notify Mastercard immediately by calling 1-833-791-7288. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.

- The total target and each person’s expected share

Cash App does not require a deadline when a pool is created. Any deadline is an agreement communicated by the organizer, not an automatic Cash App cutoff.
How friends contribute
Contributors who use Cash App
- Open the pool link.
- Check the pool name, organizer and stated purpose.
- Select or enter the amount to contribute.
- Choose an available payment method.
- Confirm the payment and keep the confirmation.
Contributors who do not use Cash App
In eligible situations, a non-user opens the same link and pays through Apple Pay or Google Pay without creating a Cash App account. New York residents are not covered by that no-account route and must contribute through a Cash App account. Cash App’s Pools contributor terms set out those conditions.
Payment-method availability and the applicable fee depend on how the contribution is funded. Do not assume that using an Apple Pay or Google Pay button makes every contribution free.
Cash App Pools fees
| Contribution method | Cash App’s stated Pools fee |
|---|---|
| Cash App balance | No fee |
| Credit card | 3% |
| Credit card used through Apple Pay or Google Pay | 3% |
For example, a $100 contribution funded by a credit card would carry a $3 fee at the stated rate. That is a contribution fee, not necessarily a separate charge to the organizer.

- To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Cash App says starting a pool is free. After the organizer closes it and transfers the money to their Cash App balance, a later transfer from Cash App to a bank or card may have its own terms and fee disclosure. Check the transfer screen at that time rather than assuming a universal cash-out price.
Cash App’s current fee and feature details are on its Pools page.
Who controls the money?
The organizer controls the collected balance. Cash App’s contributor terms say contributions become the organizer’s property when sent; contributors do not receive joint ownership or the ability to approve spending. Cash App also says use, disbursement and refunds are generally matters between the organizer and contributors.
That makes trust the central requirement. A Pool is not an escrow account, protected marketplace payment, joint bank account or automatic vendor-payment system. Cash App says it does not verify or enforce a pool’s title, description or stated purpose. Verify an organizer through a known contact method before paying, especially if a link arrives unexpectedly by text, email or social media.

Participants can see what contributors paid after contributing, which improves accountability but also means the collection is not a private ledger. Do not put unnecessary sensitive information in the pool title or description.

When you have collected enough
Reaching the target does not itself create an automatic payout. The organizer must close the pool, then transfer the balance to their Cash App balance. Once transferred, the organizer can spend or send the money.
When the target is not reached
The organizer can still close the pool below its goal and transfer the amount collected. Closing stops additional contributions. Cash App’s public FAQ does not promise an automatic refund merely because a target was missed.
Before anyone pays, agree what an underfunded pool means:

When someone asks for a refund
There is no stated automatic contributor-refund workflow. The organizer should explain the refund policy before collecting money and keep records of any repayment.
Common problems and safer practices
The link may be wrong or impersonated
- Confirm the pool title and organizer identity in the group’s existing conversation.
- Do not rely only on a display name.
- Ask the organizer to verify the link through a separate, trusted channel.
- Save the payment confirmation.
A contributor is in New York
A New York resident must use a Cash App account, even though non-users elsewhere may be able to pay with Apple Pay or Google Pay.
The Pools option is missing
- Update Cash App through the official app store.
- Recheck the Payment tab.
- Confirm that the account and location are eligible.
- Use ordinary payment requests as a fallback.
- Do not depend on a last-minute Pool for a reservation or deadline-sensitive purchase.
Cash App has not published a universal iOS or Android version requirement in the cited materials, so a specific version number should not be assumed.
Someone wants to use a credit card only for rewards
The 3% fee can outweigh rewards. Cash App’s no-account contributor terms also prohibit using the service solely to earn card points or rewards.
When Cash App Pools are a good fit
- One trusted person is responsible for paying a known group expense.
- The group wants one target and one contribution page.
- Some participants use Cash App while others prefer Apple Pay or Google Pay.
- The organizer wants visible progress and individual payment information.
- The amount is informal and low to moderate rather than a high-stakes transaction.
When to use something else
Choose another arrangement when contributors need joint approval, automatic refunds, formal accounting, recurring billing, tax documentation, dispute handling or protection from an unknown seller. Pools are also a poor fit for registered-charity fundraising, business invoices, payroll, rent-management systems and formal escrow.
- Venmo may be more convenient when everyone already uses Venmo.
- PayPal can suit groups already operating inside that account ecosystem.
- Zelle is designed for direct bank-to-bank payments between trusted people, not a named goal-based collection page.
- Splitwise is better for calculating and tracking who owes whom over time, but it does not function as the same shared balance.
- A dedicated fundraising or ticketing platform is more appropriate when you need public fundraising, formal records, purchaser protections or business and charity features.
Those services’ current fees, limits and account rules vary and are not interchangeable with Cash App Pools.
Bottom line
Cash App Pools are useful for a trusted group collecting toward one informal expense, particularly when some friends do not use Cash App. Share the purpose and rules up front, account for the 3% credit-card fee, remember the New York account requirement, and treat the organizer as the sole controller of the money. Close-and-transfer is manual, and a missed goal does not guarantee a refund.
