Candice Miller’s Late Husband Reportedly Had $33.6 Million in Debt

Court papers reportedly said Brandon Miller had $33.6 million in debt when he died. The figure is not a final estate accounting or proof that Candice Miller personally owed it all.

Us Weekly reported on December 28, 2024, that court papers obtained by The New York Times said Candice Miller claimed her late husband, Brandon Miller, had $33.6 million in debt when he died in July 2024. That is a reported filing claim—not an independently verified balance, a final court finding, or proof that Candice was personally responsible for all of it.

What the reported $33.6 million figure means

The $33.6 million was attributed to court papers that The New York Times obtained and Us Weekly summarized. The underlying filing is not available in the reviewed coverage, so the figure should be understood as what the papers reportedly said, not as a final accounting of the estate’s debts.

Us Weekly also reported that the papers described more than $20 million in unsecured loans associated with UBS Bank, BMO Bank, and American Express. The report said Candice claimed to have $8,000 in a bank account and that Brandon had $15 million in life-insurance policies from which she benefited. Those amounts are reported claims, not a complete or independently audited balance sheet; the coverage does not explain how the reported insurance figure relates to the reported debt total.

Did Candice Miller personally owe the debts?

The report concerns debts attributed to Brandon and does not establish that Candice was personally liable for every obligation. A spouse’s responsibility depends on the particular debt and applicable legal circumstances; the reported total alone cannot answer that question. The reviewed coverage does not provide a final court determination of her liability or a complete accounting of the estate’s assets, debts, and creditor claims.

What was the separate rent dispute?

Us Weekly reported a separate Manhattan apartment lawsuit involving a claim for $195,000 in unpaid rent. According to that report, Candice’s attorneys argued she should not be involved because her name was not on the lease. The coverage describes the landlord’s claim and her attorneys’ position, not a resolved outcome. The dispute should not be treated as proof that she owed the rent or that the claim was part of the reported $33.6 million debt figure.

What happened to the reported estate auction?

On January 3, 2025, Us Weekly reported that an online Mecox Bay Water Mill Estate auction listing included fine art, furniture, décor, and bespoke pieces, with bidding scheduled to close January 7, 2025. The quoted listing did not name the Millers. This was a historical report of a scheduled auction, not evidence that the sale is still open or that its proceeds settled any particular debt.

What is known about the case status?

The reviewed coverage does not establish the estate’s current financial position, the outcome of the rent dispute, or the final amount and priority of creditor claims. A June 3, 2025, Daily Beast follow-up repeated the debt figure as reporting attributed to The New York Times, but did not establish the status of related litigation.

For federal bankruptcy records, the U.S. Courts directs the public to PACER or a bankruptcy clerk’s office; its guidance describes records generally and does not confirm that a specific case exists. PACER says its nationwide case index is updated daily, but accessing it requires an account. Neither general access page verifies the reported debt amount or a case-specific outcome: U.S. Courts bankruptcy case records and credit reporting and PACER’s case search guidance.

What the reports establish—and what they do not

  • Reported: Us Weekly said court papers described $33.6 million in debt attributed to Brandon at his death, alongside other reported balances and loans.
  • Not established: The reviewed coverage does not independently verify the filing’s figures, provide a final estate accounting, or determine Candice’s personal responsibility for each debt.
  • Separate and unresolved: The $195,000 rent claim was a distinct dispute, and the reviewed reporting does not state its final disposition.
